You Aussies got our 351 Cleveland casts in 1971 and produced for decades, I gather, one of the greatest engines Ford ever built. I feel a special draw to your country and hope to someday visit Mt. Panorama and all your wonderful racing venues to learn more about your deep and rich racing history. From a lifetime American Ford fan.
Hi Iceman, that question has been asked many a time to Moffat, his reply very humble and along the lines of he did not wish to stay, he thought the competition in Australia was just as, if not more of a challenge against the likes of Bob Jane, Norm Beechey and of course Ian Geoghegan. I dare say if he did stay in the USA he would have been quite a bit more famous stateside, but we in Australia would have missed a great generation of racing thanks to his talents.
I saw the Mustang at Oran Park and at Warwick Farm as a jaw-open and wide-eyed kid. Beechey, Jane and the almighty Moffat were hammer and tongs every second of every race! Jane and the 427 Camaro fighting the screaming 302 Boss is never, ever leaving my memory. The huge crowds and the sheer excitement. Moffat and that Coke Mustang was a religious experience for me.
I grew up a Holden Boy & Mainly a Brocky Fan. I always loved The GTHO Phase III. But when Brock went to the Sierra & BMW M3 I learned to appreciate the Other Cars More. I always thought Alan Moffatt & a Big Bad Enemy, till I met him at Winton in 1995 when I was 15. He is the Most Genuine Man I've ever met. His Time for the Fans is Legendary. When Brocky tragically Died, It was a Knife through the Heart. But when I seen Alan Moffatt talk about his Best Friend "Peter" it ultimately changed how I ever seen Touring Racing. Thank You to the Bowden Family for sharing your Collection. And to Dick & Alan for sharing your Memories of the Good Old days of Real Racing.
I just adored the Moffat Mustang. Before I colour pics I had a big poster of Alan in the Mustang hooking into a corner. Truth be told I actually learned a lot of driving skills at Warwick Farm watching braking area, downshifts, braking points and how they accelerated out of corners - I used to go to every viewing point around the track and analytically observe LOL. ABSOLUTELY TRUE STORY. Never under-estimate the impact you both have have had on young people. Great video thanks for taking the time and posting.
The first race I remember watching was the iconic Bathurst 1000 in 1977, and Allan Moffat has been my favourite driver ever since. Hearing him talk about his cars, his team mates and his competitors is always a joy, he is the perfect gentleman, polite and always proud to share his successes with his team.
Despite being a life long Holden fan, I've got to admit to liking both Dick Johnson and Allan Moffat. Both were champion drivers and people, despite Moffat often being portrayed as the 'bad guy' more because of his introverted nature than anything else.
@@twilightroach4274 ... Brock's private life to me, was his business and not mine. But as for his racing, I also look at it this way. Brocky wouldn't be who he was without the likes of Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson, Allan Grice, Bob Morris, Colin Bond, John Harvey etc etc.
Thanks to living in Noble Park, an early morning paper round and a sick note of dubious provenance from Mum, it was possible to attend Sandown rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The sound of 351 GTHO's and the Boss 302 Coca Cola Mustang thundering down the main straight on open pipes was a never forgotten experience.
Thanks for the reply, Bowdens! I to agree that it's great that Moffat made the move to Australia. Had it not been for him, Ford might not be as successful now as they are today. He put Ford on the map in Oz, as far as I'm concerned.
An Old Video, but still really good......Bowdens have the Best Collection of Aussie Racing Cars......Allan Moffat was only portrayed as the "Bad Guy" by Holden fans, they often said he was a Dirty Driver, but there was no evidence that I was aware of to back that up. I think it was because he won races.....Dick was such an entertaining bloke, his Race Cam footage was always humorous, even when he was in an uncompetitive car like the Group A Mustang......I hope to visit their collection one day and see it in The Flesh.
Some of these cars are just other-worldly. Real cars. As a Brit I'm fascinated by the Aussie touring car scene - a world of its own. Supertourers have fond memories of their own attached (they looked like your dad's family saloon too until 1995 when the aero crap started coming in) but nothing beats these monstrous Aussie V8 barges. RWD, full interiors, side pipes. And they looked like road cars too. The 80s Mustangs were never really considered sporting in the same way as the 60s originals but Dickie Johnson's one is a beautiful bit of kit. Modern day V8 Supercars and BTCC cars just don't have that same aura. They're too advanced. The flaws of the old-school saloons was what made touring car racing so popular - they weren't designed to hoon round tracks and that was part of the fun.
Holden A9X Torana for me, 6 & 7 years old watching those racing, drawing the HOT symbol in my sketchbook (Didn't realize it was HDT until years later). Dual exhausts and drop tanks are ingrained into my psyche forevermore. Marlboro livery was beautiful and I've never smoked, take that advertisers.
I have most of those cars in 1:18 scale, magnificent collection of true race cars but that's just showing my age, regards Andy P.S - I love your snow foam, I would say its the best I have tried.
Geese 42 years on. Alan Moffat and the Mustang were my Idols in the day. I had a black and white photo poster of the car and the icon driver in my bedroom - even before I had a licence to drive.
Stood in awe at Oran Park, with the Boss Mustang. I saved every penny to buy a big black/white photo of him in the Phase II, 64E, so I can only nod furiously in agreement!
Great video. Being a Yank all the Aussie history and cars are fresh, new, and incredibly interesting, to me. I've already amassed quite the collection of Aussie race and muscle cars in diecast...but although I love what Allan has done for Australian motorsport, I wonder what he would've/could've done had he stayed in North America...gone the SCCA/Trans-Am route, or gone NASCAR, OR gone open-wheel, etc? I'd love to ask him, or hear that question asked of him.
I grew up watching Bathurst when these guys raced. Dick Johnson, Moffat, Brock, never a dull moment. These guys gave all to win. I was a Ford fan when Brock was becoming King of the mountain in a Holden.
Race cars that you could relate to a particular time in your life. Race cars that had emotion! Race cars that were relevant to what we drove on the road.
And some say the Poms are wingers... Never sure why! I don't understand why people like yourself have to come online and find fault, it's like you think you are going to get a medal for it.. Neil Crompton is a legend in Australia, knows his cars and racing, plus he was a good driver in the day, have some respect I say.
Just read what you said 6yrs ago I bet the negative comments are ten times worse today. If you cant say something constructive dont comment ,,,,,if only carlsberg did RUclips comments,,,, I've left very similar comments as yourself respect 👏great video loved it,on a lighter note allan Moffat has tones of Donald Trump when I listen to him speaking 😂 2 great men surrounded by iconic cars this I one happy winging poem!!
Thanks for that awesome video. Man, that brings back memeories. Fantastic to see a collector who drives his cars, or lets the original drivers in them. Congrats Bowden and sons.
Beautiful....and yes I do want to hear it again Alan... And sorry for pinching your falcon in Adelaide.. I needed a beer.. Haha And Dickie, your a FALCON legend..
There’s some beautiful cars there and possibly the best race cars to hit the race tracks. My favourite ones would have to be the Greens Tuff XE and the Brock VK big banger which sadly I didn’t see there, they would have to be 2 of the best cars ever built in Australia
Agree with him on Crompton, has done so much motor racing . Moffat and Geogehan at Sandown were incredible Pete was riding Moffats bumper down the main Straight in Falcons the teams must been going nuts.he was on his bumper. Imagine if someone did that today. I am convinced that Peter Geoghan, Norm Beechey, Bob Jane & Moffat to name a few would have spent all their time being penalised. Great racing to, These cars did not run the Bathurst 500, different rules.
Can you imagine the fantasies Allan Moffat's mustang inspired in an impressionable car-loving thirteen year old who lived a bus ride from Sandown? I liked that Allan was Canadian, I suppose life still felt a bit colonial in those days, and took pains to point that out to people who assumed he was American.
Amazing collection, had the privilege of meeting a couple of the Bowden guys at a recent conference, top blokes. Only thing about the video, I cringed every time the presenter touched or leaned on the cars, you don't do that to a man's ride on the street, you certainly wouldn't do it to these.
G'day Buck, the 78 was done by Jim Sheppard in 1980, who did the work for HDT in the day after the crash it had in 1979 Bathurst. The 79 was painted by HDT and is still the original unrestored condition from its last races after the 79 Bathurst. It's as correct as they come.
Neil Crompton saying "Car of the Future". Now in 2019 we see how much of a mistake this was to bring in. NASCAR is also hurting from Car of the Future.
lucky to have such great race tracks in sunny Oz.we,here in the UK,have really quaint tracks like Silverstone and Brands. You've got tracks like Surfer's and Mount Panorama.even the US have better tracks,Lime Rock,Road America,Road Atlanta, the list goes on.
It would be cool, but there is no money in that for most of the current sponsors, so it is very unlikely you will ever see it done. About the only teams who may do it would be DJR and HDT, like they have in the recent past.
In front of Moffat in the fabulous Coca Cola Mustang, GTHO, Chevy Monza, Cologne Capri or BDA Escort? You are about to be overtaken and get a free driving lesson.
Ford Motor Company built a few of them in the total performance era, from 1966 and 1967 With Carroll Shelby and 1969 to 1970 with Bud Moore Racing - all named after the Trans Am championship they raced in. Later on the name was "highjacked" for a well known non-racing model that kinda lacked any real performance.
I know this is an old video, but I have to ask. Why does Neil Crompton have a bit of a bad reputation? I personally don't mind Crompo, he was a decent driver in his day and is knowledgeable about the sport. Yet I see a fair few people pouring shit all over him. Wouldn't have anything to do with him giving the Bathurst '92 crowd the middle finger while they were booing the Nissans, would it?
Neil is by far one of the most knowledgeable in the industry we have personally met, can drive plus he is a great genuine guy as well. He has done more for motorsport here than any of those who throw the barbs or comments his way.
Aaaannnnnd ………….. that's the life of a rich boy , who couldn't drive . To be honest , from what I've seen , I wouldn't let him push my wheel barrow lmao .
Best is a very strong word, with lots of contenders out there, most winning by a long way is actually the E30 BMW M3's... But Nissan did well down here, RS500 Sierra's kept them honest though when you watch the Championship races in those years. Only a few raced here in Australia, we did have a R32 GTR here, just not shown in this old video. It was production raced by Falken Tyres for many years though, super nice old beast.
I'm so proud that Moff is an Aussie.
He's a good, humble and gentleman sportsman.

From a lifetime American Ford fan.
Actually it was 1970 not 71 the 70 XW GTHO Phase 2 Ford Falcon had the very first 351 V8 Cleveland

I never understood why anyone gave Moffat a hard time. He seems like a really genuine bloke who was supportive to his competitors.
Hindsight is a great thing, I think it was just because he was a yank.
He was Canadian.
Ooh, that would have hurt. Calling him a Yank - nothing worse you can call a Canuk.
Because we are bogans.
Maybe the were too dumb to know he's Canadian and thought he was a yank?
Believe it or Not, I just saw Allan Moffat today And got a picture with him!!!
He's on his final lap from all reports. 😪
God bless Allan Moffat for all he has given 🙏
Legend🎼🤘🏻

2 absolute legends and gentlemen, hosted by a champion

Two of Australia’s great gentlemen! If you love racing, these gentlemen stand out !
Thanks for sharing these wonderful memories🎼🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
If it weren't for the Bowdens you'd have to wonder what would have come of these cars.
True dedication to the sport and the history.
They would all be at my place

Even though I was a 100% Brock fan, but dare I say it, some of Brock’s private life quality’s leaves a sour taste.

Such a great era for Aussie motor sport just the best
Thank you Bear, much appreciated mate, its great to be able to share our passion for the cars with enthusiasts like yourself.
The heads using a canted valve design being developed for the planned 351 Cleveland (which debuted the following year).
Well done. As an American and road racer I always loved the Australian racing cars.
Thanks for the reply, Bowdens! I to agree that it's great that Moffat made the move to Australia. Had it not been for him, Ford might not be as successful now as they are today. He put Ford on the map in Oz, as far as I'm concerned.

Totally awesome. I saw all Bathurst races live from 1970 to around 1985. This brings back fond memories...
Great to see that someone had the foresight to keep these iconic cars. To see them all in one collection is amazing.

I'm sure that even though they were fierce rivals,I'm sure that there's great respect between Mr.Moffat and Mr.Johnson.

wldnt it be good if they had a heritage round with the current cars painted in some old schemes ?

Who repainted the 78 and 79 Torana's? They need to finish both roof and redo the 79 bonnet correctly!

Wanna hear it again? lol

nahh mate these cars are the real deal!

How can you have a Trans Am mustang

do all the cars still run?
Rx7????
We have a couple of them here in the shed...
👌👍💯😎

theyd have to be replicas
not
Aaaannnnnd ………….. that's the life of a rich boy , who couldn't drive .
To be honest , from what I've seen , I wouldn't let him push my wheel barrow lmao .
And yet, the best touring car of all time is missing...the R32 GTR...but thank goodness the yawn boring v8 Taxi Cars is coming to an end
