Your channel is my fave on RUclips. don’t forget that progressing daily doesn’t have to mean in the direction you were going a year ago. I’ll watch whatever you wanna make and I think a lot of folks just really appreciate your vibe and honesty.
John I've gotten that same feeling just lifting weights. I am a personal trainer and I see it happen a lot in people I train as well. When we workout, doesn't matter what kind of exercise we're doing, we are putting our bodies under stress. When we are under that stress sometimes things that we're not dealing with or haven't dealt with in the past pop up. What I found works best is to not fight the thoughts or fears coming in but acknowledge the thoughts then let them flow on down the river. If it's something that needs worked out, talk about it with someone you trust. Even if it's just to vent, it helps out. Just let them know that you just need someone to listen so you can get what's bothering you out. You're not alone and you'll get through this.
Hi John. I truly appreciate you showing vulnerability. That feeling you get in your stomach I didn’t know how to explain, but I’m glad I can feel relatable to someone I admire. I haven’t skated for a few years, due to depression and that fear, or idk what to call it. Thanks for being so real. And thanks for letting skate along with you, mentally.
Growing up in AZ, we used to night sessions in the summer. Dodgy, but we always had a good time. Keep up your grind, you always figure it out, John. You're strong willed, and humble. I respect that about you.
John just gotta say something. Near the end when you went to the park in the morning I saw something. I saw that skateboarding has taking a big tool on your mental health what it looks like to me. I hope that your mental health is good and it continues to be good. I don’t want you to stop doing YT skateboarding because you were the first person I watched who got me into skateboarding. Keep doing good work.
I have a friend that has a similar problem, at night he’s just not him self but in the morning or afternoon he’s so good. I think it’s really comes down to if your 100% feeling the vibe or not
I see myself in this video ALOT. I just turned 35 years old and I started skating a little over 20 years ago. It was all I wanted to do and I learned ALOT of tricks over the years and had a pretty ample selection of both flip tricks and grinds/slides. I did have a hiatus from 2015 to about 2021 where I only skated once every six months or so within those 6 years because ya know, life, work, etc. Every time I would try and go skate, I found myself not knowing what the hell I was doing. One particular trick I had this issue with was crooked grinds. I used to be able to do crooked grinds with my eyes closed and crook for miles on long ledges, etc. I had nollie crooks, kickflip crooks, crook nollie heelflip out, YOU NAME IT. But once I took that hiatus I found that no matter how hard I tried, I could not for the life of me even lock into a crooked grind. Like AT ALL. This happened to me with a lot of other tricks I had on lock as well (frontside flips, backside flips, nollie flips, backside tailslides). I grew frustrated because how could it be that I had these tricks on lock for so long and now I couldn't even come remotely close to doing them JUST because I haven't skated in four months? I understood that I wouldn't have them as consistently as I would had I skated more often but COME ON, I couldn't even come close to doing them! It just didn't make sense and it felt super unfair to me. What I figured out these past 6 months is that the more I thought about WHY this was happening and HOW I could fix it, the foggier my mind was when I skated. I decided that I would approach skateboarding as if I were a newbie again. I would go to the park and just do a countless ollies, nollies, fakie ollies, switch ollies, nollie backside 180's, 50-50 grinds on baby ledges and just cruise the park kinda like you were doing in the second part of this video. Eventually when I stopped thinking so much about it, I started flipping my board again (kickflips, switch flips, backside flips). I started getting back into grinds little by little and the crooks came back on their own. I just locked in to my first backside tailslide in over 8 years just yesterday and it's only a matter of days before I land that bad boy. My whole point here is to just go back to your roots man. Remember how stoked you were to just roll around when you first stepped on a board and how blessed you are to still be even pushing around as a grown man. You use that as your foundation and the rest comes on it's own my guy. And let's be real, you have switch backside lips and switch back tails lol you're in good shape homie. Sorry for the longwinded comment man but damn this video hit home. Blessings!! Sk8 or Die!
too much skating can do that to you. if you take a couple days and come back, then you will feel better. just don’t let the mental stuff affect you when you skate because you are just as gnarly as ever and if you rewatch some videos it’ll help you feel confident with tricks again!
Hey John! Idk what it’s like to get older I’m only 21 but I’ve been injured for 2 years and have just been dying to skate every second of it. However I’ve been seeing a trend lately that all the older pro skaters have been starting to work out and keep their bodies in shape and I think the change is apparent in their skating. Just thought that working out or running or whatever you wanna do could be a valid option, maybe better than therapy😂, but whatever you wanna do is cool man. Just wanna watch you skate forever honestly hearing you talking about giving up like that is heartbreaking. ❤keep at it but don’t go too hard like I did there’s a time and place for every trick 😂when your body tells you to stop, you should prob stop but you probably know all this very well.
Honestly, seeing pros struggle with basics is so wholesome for me, because i see myself in you, it reminds myself that we are all humans and we are the same in some ways)
It's hard to get to someone who is in an anxiety/depression bubble. I hope this gets to you. We love you, not for the skating, but because you matter. Your soul does something that's special. No pressure, quit if it sucks. You honestly have no obligations, except to self.
John I’ve been watching you since you first moved to New York, I personally would watch you’re videos even if there was no skating, the positive energy you put out and manifest even thru toughs times is beyond admirable. Do what you love n true ones will follow‼️✊ thanks for getting me back into skating 🎉
John you are such a good skater and a massive inspiration to many of us. You already know but not every day is as good as we'd like it to be, specially in something such as skating. Mental barriers are real struggle sometimes. Doesn't mean you getting worse, just a bad day which you are allowed to have. Your skating is truly amazing and inspiring. Keep killing it!
i think the best thing to remember with tricks like this that u get hung up on, feel like its a basic u should know; just know how many great skaters have troubles with it. its okay to forget, its okay to not be perfect. also don't forget that skating at night (less you go into a night session from a nonstop day session) usually ends up in anyone being unable to do basic things. pro chess players have the same issue, after their first morning coffee they perform higher than their rating and after ~6pm they can even be 100 points below their elo. IE, yes skating at night sucks and I'm not the only person who believes that even one night sesh can screw up a trick for you really bad even the next day.
honestly dude you inspire the hell outta me, skateboarding is such a personal thing to me and watching your videos always reminds me of how much fun it is. So thank you tons.
I like skating at night just because it’s the last thing I do for the day and it’s a really good stress reliever and a break before I go to bed. I definitely run into those mental blocks as well.
When I ride at night (past midnight) it takes me quite a while to wind down, but it's good energy - not the can't sleep energy that you get sometimes. It's productive. I want to watch tutorial videos, vibe videos, take care of stuff at home...
really appreciated hearing this opinion on the skate community, sometimes it feels like you have to follow the skate culture if you wanna skate, but what even is that culture? I know such diverse skaters (I mean their character traits, not their skating), and this diversity is my favorit thing to the skate community, so I don't wanna adapt to that culture either, if instead I can just be myself (and I think most skaters are cool with people not adapting to the culture, it's just some that are getting the attention who make it look like we'd need to follow some culture)
I think its less about forgetting and more about the body not wanting to risk hurting itself as time goes on? Getting an injury as a working adult is really inconvenient. I get similar anxiety when approaching or trying to land a trick (been skating for like 1yr and a half and still on beginner tricks).
hi john! i wanted to say this even tho u may or may not see this that "nervous" feeling is only happening due the constant stress u put urself and especially with ur worklife and what not but all u need is a break, although i am about to turn 15 in a few days i had this feeling in so many actives and especially with skating but whenever that feeling pops up i just take a day or so to get my rest that not only my body needs but also my mind so thats why i feel taking a break would be good for u. hope u feel better for the rest of yo life john!
Nice one on overcoming that 'glitch'! Seems like your energy was well out at night. Maybe a result of thinking about the shitty vibes in the skate industry and not feeling so stoked about growing your channel. It made me smile when you overcame the battle. I get those glithes too, sometimes. I think sensitive people are more prone to those types of mental glitches when skating. Also, skating at night and in the cold when you're not used to it, or havent done it in a while is a full, sensory, mental, and emotional change of experience. Even down to things like our bodies natural ebb and flow of energy through our circadiam rhythm. As nature intended it, chemicals designed to make us alert, sharp and focused dull off at night to prepare us for sleep. It can take a long time in a night sesh to warm those brain chemicals up meaning our reflexes are dull and physical energy not optimal. The cold is rough too! I hope you'll keep your channel going. I beleive there is a huge community that love it.
Appreciate you sharing this, man. I've watched a lot of your videos, and this one was pretty raw. You could've cut a lot of that out, but you didn't. The honesty is awesome.
5:54 We don't realize how much the weather affects our performance in skateboarding... Now that It's getting really hot here in Brazil I'm getting my expections really low so I don't get too frustrated lol keep killing it John, you're the best!
What are you saying about sports psychology sounds a lot like what Dr Don Greene speaks about as well, it also actually sounds a lot like what I was experiencing at uni when I was studying my music major. There is also a concept called circles of focus which has various implications. Thanks for the video, John.
Brother. I really felt for you. I feel for you. It seems like you put a lot of pressure on yourself. And I know first hand what it's like to feel like you almost HATE the thing you love doing. Especially when it's your job. Maybe you should try a different angle of skating. Something where you don't have to be the focal point. Maybe do lessons at the skatepark. You're incredibly talented and naturally so kind. You have a lot of support. I don't want you to think you're alone buddy.
I’m sorry you’re going through that mental block. I’m in my late 20’s as well and have faced similar problems. Mental health is the most important. If not 100% mentally, it throws everything way off.
Late night skating, and skating at dawn are my favorite. Especially during the summer. So cool, crisp, the air smells/feels better. Less noise, less people. And I either haven’t been bothered by the days events yet and are super focused, or I’m vetting them out doing what I love more than anything.
Hey John, sucks to hear about your mental state, I personally struggle with depression and my skateboarding progression is one of the main things that helps me keep going so I understand where your head's at somewhat. Don't worry, although switch back lipslides may seem easy, they're no basic trick and if you could do it once, you could do it again.
I’ve had this as a cyclist for 35 years; every now and then a skill goes on freeze, which for us is usually a sudden fear of fast descending, high-speed concerning, and general bike handling skills. Even the most elite athletes cannot 100% understand or control their abilities, though most of the time, it’s really just a matter of knowing when the stop, take a step back, take a break, refocus, back off the skill expectations, and then finally re-approach and rebuild (this works for me as both a cyclist and a scooter rider; I’m too new to skateboarding to experience any of this yet)
That grapevine skate park is honestly the worst though. The entire concrete base is tilted 15 degrees downwards towards the tennis courts, it makes even the most simplest things frustrating. You're doing awesome brother. It's not you, it's the park
@ 11:00 --- was driving home from therapy when I heard you say this 😅 The therapist I see has a therapist, and she doesn't always enjoy it but I like therapy. Nothing to be ashamed about, either my man. Everything starts from within the mind, so you gotta make sure that's taken care of first and foremost. All the best my friend, love the videos. (wanna learn lipslides so bad, lol, inspired!)
Hey I bet you won’t actually read this but please know stay positive. I love your channel, vibe, skate style and edits. Tbh only skate channel I religiously watch. So dedicated and honest. Keep doing what your doing. Miss the drone shots and miss your factory skate buddy channel so bad.
John Hill, I might have a solution. Maybe you should try to have more breaks and time to relax in your day or week. Narrow in on what you truly care about and what is healthy for you. So take a break, come back to what you enjoy doing(the thing that makes you feel in the zone and time goes by really fast) and have fun. And over sometime you will see that you are getting and feeling better again. MUST READ
Texas is now approximately 21km further away from the Sun at night. The new orientation from the Sun means the gravity is greater towards the ground at night.
yo john i just want you to know you make us happy when you upload but if you take a break from skating from time to time that’s fine, take care of yourself. you’re awesome
My theory on night skating- Bright moonlight or incandescent yellow street lights are the best because they dont 'flash'. LEDs and CFLs flash so rapidly that normally we can't detect it, but skating is so high precision that you actually notice the flashing. You might perceive it as "lag time" where it seems like you are seeing everything after its already happened.
Yo John. The yips is a weird thing and how it can affect the other aspects of your life is a snowball effect that I don't enjoy. While I'm nowhere near your level of skating, I've had that phenomenon where you basically forget how to do something that you were really good at a week or a year ago. I wish I understood it better, but I can relate to how you feel (plus the depression on top of it all). Thanks for making this video and sharing with us.
Skating at night does suck a few days ago I was skating at like 6:00pm and all I have is a garage light is this tiny area and I was working on power slides, me getting speed and I get BODIED by a pebble. I NEED the wheels that say pebbles suck lol
This also happen to me when im feel older since covid thing, now im getting better again on my skateboard (always have fun, dont think about other things)
I skated for 10 years joined the army stopped for 10 years or so and been back in it for about 6 months now I started posting on RUclips it's insane how quick things come back I use skateboarding to help my mental health and physical health benefits
I used to love and actually preferred skating at night. I quit skating though, sadly. My ankles can't take it anymore. I was never very good, with my best trick being a varial heelflip. John skates better in switch than I could ever do in my normal stance.
I have inner ears problems so my balance isn’t the best but still somewhat good at skating. However, I can’t even Ollie at night haha shadows mess me up. Hard to explain
How the heck is the skatepark empty at night. Here in Melbourne, Australia if the skatepark has lights there will be people there till the light turn off.
John I don’t think your having the “yips” I don’t think it’s any of what you really think it is honestly. I think it’s just(this is just my opinion) you have learned to many tricks. You’ve done tricks I’ve never even seen before bro. You won’t be able to do all those tricks forever. You will lose some. Some will take longer to come back. Others will come back the next day such as switch back lip. With all these tricks you probably do all of them 3-4 times a day which isn’t a lot honestly considering you do SO many. So yeah you won’t have every trick in every stance first try John. And You don’t need a therapist man relax. Try to calm down. You look like your gonna have a break down everytime you talk to us. Just breath you will be okay and everything will be okay lol your doing great ❤
I think a lot of it is because you are so dialed on doing it during the day. They say the body tunes into what time of the day you exert yourself the most on a regular basis and turns up the metabolism and everything at that specific time. Of course age would not help with the situation, but probably better than musicians in their 40s~50s suddenly losing their perfect pitch. It's a real thing.
I used to do backflips on a trampoline. One day I just couldn’t do it anymore… started flying off the trampoline, couldn’t stay in place. It’s been 20 yrs…
hey john, BROO i have been watching you for 4 years now and through those 4 years i have been skating and DUDE i lovvve you vids. and you have help me learn how to skate peaceful
You're on a completely different level of skating to me but what you describe totally happened to me with rock to fakies, had been doing them for YEARS without even thinking and then one day got caught in a loop of getting psyched out by them. Since then they're just not a natural trick for me, I have to be in a true flow state to get them. So weird, still hoping that they get comfy again 😅
Night time skating > daytime skating Nights are far better as long as the skatepark has lights of some sort, would be horrendous skating in a pitch black skatepark, but nights usually arent too hot, no distractions, scooters or kids so in general it just improves the skate session significantly, its quiet, peaceful and mby even lonely
Hey John, please go see a therapist, if you feel that way. It really helps to talk to someone and it's an issue that shouldn't be overlooked. I think the last years were tough for most people, and I should probably go see a therapist myself, but a lot of people have been in a weird mental state for three years now. I like to go just for a cruising session when my mind is full, keeps the pressure to perform away and helps clear the mind!
I’m so physically sick so I can’t skate, and I miss skating so bad. I haven’t skated in like 6 months and imma try to learn a shuv it/Manuel instead of a Ollie ☹️
it's just fear, you got more things to look up for with all your things in your life and your marriage, if it gets too spooky after some fall throw some pads on till u back in the groove, i''m older so that's how i deal with fear as a 36 year old guy while still progressing daily.

You're incredibly talented and naturally so kind. You have a lot of support. I don't want you to think you're alone buddy.
I really like what you are doing John hill you inspired me to start skate boarding and keep it up
Appreciate you sharing all this with us. Hope everything is going well. Keep doing your thing man.
I’m sorry you’re going through that mental block. I’m in my late 20’s as well and have faced similar problems. Mental health is the most important. If not 100% mentally, it throws everything way off.
I know the feeling about battling with tricks. We keep doing till we get it
Late night skating, and skating at dawn are my favorite.
The value of this channel to me on a personal level cannot be described. Thank you John.
Thank you John, for everything you do for skateboarding and beyond. Hope to skate with you some day and learn a few things
@ 11:00 --- was driving home from therapy when I heard you say this 😅
The therapist I see has a therapist, and she doesn't always enjoy it but I like therapy.
Nothing to be ashamed about, either my man.
Everything starts from within the mind, so you gotta make sure that's taken care of first and foremost.
All the best my friend, love the videos.
(wanna learn lipslides so bad, lol, inspired!)
Much love John! Stay healthy 👍
Hey I bet you won’t actually read this but please know stay positive. I love your channel, vibe, skate style and edits. Tbh only skate channel I religiously watch. So dedicated and honest. Keep doing what your doing. Miss the drone shots and miss your factory skate buddy channel so bad.
i really hope you feel better, you a a really talented skater and have built a amazing community
we got your back mate, take your time everyone has these moments. You are my inspiration
5:19 I’m pretty sure Dale Decker already made it😂😂😂
I can relate to your struggle my best tip is be consistent stop making excuses and put in work that’s it good luck man 🤟🏽
John Hill, I might have a solution.
My theory on night skating-
Bright moonlight or incandescent yellow street lights are the best because they dont 'flash'. LEDs and CFLs flash so rapidly that normally we can't detect it, but skating is so high precision that you actually notice the flashing. You might perceive it as "lag time" where it seems like you are seeing everything after its already happened.
HID lights are used in professional sports stadiums and they also do not have this "flashing" effect
I live in AZ where skating at night is pretty much the only option 9 months out of the year
Thanks for making this video and sharing with us.
for mainly two reasons:
1. You are alone.
2. You can't see s**t.
I have been having this mental block with billiards. I grew up playing. Lately I haven’t been able to play as good as I did when I was a teenager.
Skating at night does suck a few days ago I was skating at like 6:00pm and all I have is a garage light is this tiny area and I was working on power slides, me getting speed and I get BODIED by a pebble. I NEED the wheels that say pebbles suck lol
Skaters worst enemy
@@Dillanwoodring exactly
This also happen to me when im feel older since covid thing, now im getting better again on my skateboard (always have fun, dont think about other things)
Those obstacles look so awesome though man! We have a similar set up down here where I’m at but the floor has so many cracks 💔
Congratulations on the marriage John. Keep killin it
I skated for 10 years joined the army stopped for 10 years or so and been back in it for about 6 months now I started posting on RUclips it's insane how quick things come back I use skateboarding to help my mental health and physical health benefits
I used to love and actually preferred skating at night. I quit skating though, sadly. My ankles can't take it anymore. I was never very good, with my best trick being a varial heelflip. John skates better in switch than I could ever do in my normal stance.
Night skating do be lit. ACCEPT when you live in an area that is below 30° at night 😤
Hey John, I look forward to watching your videos all the time. I hope you feel better soon. You're doing great man, keep it up.
I have inner ears problems so my balance isn’t the best but still somewhat good at skating. However, I can’t even Ollie at night haha shadows mess me up. Hard to explain
How the heck is the skatepark empty at night. Here in Melbourne, Australia if the skatepark has lights there will be people there till the light turn off.
i love sneaking out and skating
It’s been 20 yrs…
hey john, BROO i have been watching you for 4 years now and through those 4 years i have been skating and DUDE i lovvve you vids. and you have help me learn how to skate peaceful
im in this same rut with skating right now.. Watching this doesn't make me feel alone in this
0:45 clean back krook 😗👌
Bro immediately changed his mind about the park after the aaron kyro rating 💀
You’re probably just having a bad week/month… I feel like everyone has these days with skateboarding. Just keep on moving ! Enjoyed the video !
I'm supportive of everyone. Believe in yourselves and each other
Your skating is more or less flawless and smooth as hell, don’t let stuff get on top of you brother ❤
I have gotten the same feeling in my hobby of shooting firearms for precision and in my long time hobby and work of flying drones.
I’ve been feeling it lately
Our local park doesn’t have lights. So when it gets too dark. That’s it :/
deppresion fucking sucks man, I hope you feel better and get over that barrier
I think you should try ice baths to help with your mind state
Bra! I'm 42 and still learning shit on skateboard. Your switch game is amazing me everytime I watch you. Stop moaning about age! You're a skater! ;)
I cant confirm or deny my involvement in this first decent.... but lets just say it was epic!
Night time skating > daytime skating
Nights are far better as long as the skatepark has lights of some sort, would be horrendous skating in a pitch black skatepark, but nights usually arent too hot, no distractions, scooters or kids so in general it just improves the skate session significantly, its quiet, peaceful and mby even lonely
Here in Tongeren (Belgium) we cant skate at night because of the scary people and junkies with knives sleeping at the park
Damn his switch Ollie’s are better than my regular ones lol
You skate at night when your tricks are too fire to handle a sun burn.

Happy Thanksgiving John much love to you and your family
The intro was very therapeutic.
I love skating at night 🤷♂️
It is a nice change up
ay john, whats the song at the beginning???? Thanks :D
I’m so physically sick so I can’t skate, and I miss skating so bad. I haven’t skated in like 6 months and imma try to learn a shuv it/Manuel instead of a Ollie ☹️
its normal to have days/weeks "off"
don't be to harsh on yourself !
Ah c'mon John. Everyone has those days. Don't beat yourself up!
I like your skateboarding style.
it's just fear, you got more things to look up for with all your things in your life and your marriage, if it gets too spooky after some fall throw some pads on till u back in the groove, i''m older so that's how i deal with fear as a 36 year old guy while still progressing daily.
I feel like this is one of the things where the more you think about it and the more you make it exist the worse it gets
