One of the most random things about the ban is that in my town the police chief’s son used to skate, he helped the locals smugle boards under his dads nose, and alot of the boards were stored in there yard, simply because why would the police chief look for banned skateboards in his own yard? S/o all the norwegian skaters keeping the scene alive to this day!
Having been part of the «smuggling operation» back in the days, smuggling skateboards from both Denmark and Sweden into Norway, building ramps in the forest, even building a small street section in the woods for ledge tricks and grinding and stuff, and being chased by cops through the snow and hiding in parking garages, I can confirm we had a great time being outlaws, and even parents supporting it :) A lot of kids skated in populated/busy main streets with «not great skills», causing some injuries and stuff, that was part of why the ban came to be, as well as the injury-statistics from the US - for some weird reason Quad Rollers Skates have never been banned though, even if they are the «mother of skateboards» and even less controllable in public spaces.
i recently moved to norway and let me tell you.... people skate here like mad crazy😂

I have a friend that used to smuggle skateboards over the boarder from Sweden (where I live and where you could buy skateboards) to Norway (our neighbour country). 😁

whoa thats pretty crazy how that happened, dude, you should do some vids on skating Africa, sure people in cities and urban areas skate there, but its really has taken hold in some unexpected places in Africa, like rural areas. , rural areas in Kenya, south Africa ( rural and inner cities) , Uganda, Madagascar even !
As an Norwegian citizen who skates i absolutely love the skate culture here and norway has made really great parks were everyone neets and gets to know eachother. Its like everyone who skates knows eachother

hey john, i just started watching your videos a week ago and i just want to say you are such an inspiration. im 33/34 yo, been relearning old tricks for about a year now after a 12 year hiatus lol i like that you skate alone. im also i loner skater because the skateparks in my city are usually empty :)

When we go hurt during the national ban days in Norway we would always tell the doctors the injuries where from playing soccer, which is probably the most popular sport in norway - that’s how we got those statistics to stay low

Banned from 1979 to 1989
Skateboarding was actually banned in Norway from 1978 to 1989. The reason for the ban was a law that came in 1977, which was supposed to protect people from dangerous products. Skateboards were seen as a dangerous toy and were therefore banned from buying, selling and using in Norway.
I had a skateboard illegaly back in the 80s as a 10 year old... Never felt more like a rebel... Skate tool in my Airwalk fanny pack and a ball cap with a team I've never heard of...
In the 90s, skating took off in a HUGE way at my school. I was out of it by then, but yeah, skater kids were cool as hell back then.

my dad used to skate when it was banned, he always went out with his buddies and skated, and the police always chased them. He managed to buy a skateboard in Sweden when he visited.

I'm pretty sure more countries have banned skateboarding. But very few actually enforce such rules or laws or _still_ allow for skateboarding in designated skateparks.
Most people don't know (or care), but skateboarding is prohibited on the street or sidewalk in any business district at any time in California. In a non-business district, skateboarding is prohibited at night (30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise).
In the UK it is actually illegal to skate the street pavement or footpaths.
And then I haven't talked about how most spots people would want to skate, are of course private property, making it again pretty much illegal or problematic by default. Doesn't mean people don't skate there anyway. But skateboarding as a whole is a bit more 'banned' than people assume.

It's funny because my weird street suburb thing has signs up that says "no skateboarding," but I use mine as a way to commute. I get so many karens and even kids acting like I'm some criminal. Some will say snarky remarks, or even just act like I'm causing some shit. Lol now I can't even imagine that but it being a entire country LOL. That would suck so much on so many levels. Have nothing but respect for old skaters in Norway. Lol

My 1st skateboard at age 13 I felt a little bad only because many rebels were doing it but one knows by instinct that it's OK but a several months later having moved outta the country I left my skateboard here & only retook skateboarding at age 41 still doing it as my main gig 😎

also, varials are technically done with body or by grabbing the board with your hand and rotating it. at some point someone thought board varial meant shuv-it. hence improperly named, but accepted, varial flips and heels. the more you know🌈✨

Norway is super awesome. speak Devil. Sadly Norway did ban skateboarding.Sweden almost went the same way. Skateboarding was considered to be dangerious and obnoxious. But 2day. It´s accepted all over. in fact familes sometimes skate together..;)is it the same way stateside? Lastly i watch your channel often for useful insights and learn some and above all. just great fun. so keep it up, Buddy.

Its not like it was difficult to smuggle them from sweden or something like that, bordercontrols where more there to look for if you had bought more than allowed meatquota that was at around 5 kg I think it might have been ? well I was too young for alcohol back then so I was one of these "meatkids" we had 5 kg meat on our personal quota so adults used to fill the cars with children and buy meat like mad. Today it is 10 kg. per person tough. Alcohol is still strict they where looking for that too.
Rest you pretty much could get away with at the border, if they stopped you. We used to smuggle shitload of firecrackers from Finland, small red ones, big black ones ... filled the body with the firecrackers .. they where highly illegal in Norway ... but we kids did not care 😛 and the sellers in Finland did not care either, we bought these stuff as kids there.
