    Ive just overseeded with Rye and Tall Fescue, the only downside with anything other than Rye is germination is considerably harder and longer, you really do need higher temps and have to be prepared to water regularly. When your lawn is used daily and you have dogs like i do, it's very hard but we keep trying :)

    It takes a big man to change grass when married, lol. I kove you're videos and have been watching since the first. Im also changing mine as im in a new build so 3 tonns of top soil and some lawn association seed is going down which i believe is bent fescue

    Do you not feel that this problem will happen every year unless you dig down and remove the clay subsoil?

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Месяц назад +1

      I won't know until I try a different type of plant. It should fix the problem and the denser root system should in theory improve the soil over many years. I think it's worth a try.

    I did my usual overseed with rye in the autumn but like NG here the winter wet murdered the 2 back lawns which at times looked like a mud pit. I did a hollow tine aeration and scarify in early April and overseeded with rye again. I have germination but like NG there are quite big spaces between the grasses. Also lalgued with POA and weed grasses which have blown over from my neighbours jungle.
    I have watched all the Lawn Association videos so decided to do another overseed with a bent /fescue, especially in the areas that get wet and thin. Just finished yesterday so let's see how they turn out. If NG has good results from the bent/fescue turf I will seriously consider doing at least one of the back lawns (approx 20sq.m).
    So will be avidly watching the results from both of your back lawns.

      A lot of people are hesitant to change grass species and I see why. I'm still keeping rye at the front as it seems to be thriving there. But at the back, it just doesn't work. I could have easily continued with the rye over seed, kept it long and made it look dense (would be a good RUclips video), but I'd end up in the same place next year.
      And as I always say, I'm not an expert. I'll always be honest with what works and what doesn't. Mistakes aren't popular on RUclips, but I'll continue to post about them as it might help someone out!

    im betting its either aitkens or tillers turf? although they could feasibly be the same. also i wish you would acid wash that bloody wall its doing my head in. oh and i always use a bit of cardboard as a guard to stop the spray hitting plants - easy to use. looking forward to it!

    This will be an interesting comparison between your seeded bent / fescue and the turf. I overseeded my rye lawn with bent/fescue in April but it hasn’t really worked as it took so long to germinate that Poa has taken over. I think it’s a losing battle for me and as I’ll be moving in a couple of years I’m curious about bent / fescue turf as a solution in the new property and it will be great to see how you fair and what lessons I can learn.
    Good luck, as always!

      With what I’ve learnt recently, rye will never multiply/thicken as a sward - over seeding is the only way. Bent/fescue seems to have the opposite problem with it sometimes getting too thick! But I won’t be complaining if that’s the case!

    • @ZippeeKaiYay
      @ZippeeKaiYay Месяц назад

      Similar, not worried if I had a dense swarm and needed to scarify regularly. Be interested how it copes with rotary mowing and being taller than a golf green. Although if you get that cylinder mower you maybe able to cut much lower.

    Have you got to go down a level to allow room for the new turf? My front lawn is depressing me, had so much Poa which I dug out and filled with soil/sand only to now have even more poa popping up all over the place. I certainly feel like killing the lot and going for a bent/fescue mix. Even my super straight edges have been mullered by the dreaded poa.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Месяц назад

      Poa is relentless - almost impossible to irradiate! The dark green of rye sometimes makes it stand out more too.

    Do you have lots of worm cast on your newly sown lawn? Mines 6 inches of pretty much new sand and somehow has blobs of sand. I guess worms go in under the fleece as it was damp. Not much I can do until the mower flattens them. Not sure when that will be at it was sown just under 3 weeks ago and its only about an inches right now. hopefully if its dry they just crumble.

      I do get a few, but they seem to take care of themselves after a bit of time. It won't have too much of an impact, may just disturb a few seedlings here and there, but nothing to cause too much damage.

      @@justsomeguy7993 I'm fairly hesitant myself since last year when I found out about them. This year I did have to overseed after winter and having Poa A. issues. Personally I'm considering Turf Type Tall Fescue, letting it root up to a meter deep (idealy), dont water it at all. So Poa would dry out in summer. And another area full bent and/or fescue, mowed very short with reel mower. So no middleground. But we'll see right now I've got some nice Rye coming in after recovery..

    To be fair its strange how weak/bare your lawn has got over the colder months, but I'm not convinced the main issue is the grass seed type, rather than the conditions whether it be in the soil or amount of sunlight. Will be interesting to see how things work out with different mix.

    Why kill it?
    Introducing fescue and bent seed will slowly spread,over time
    Putting turf down requires a lot of proper watering,not just chucking down.watering,etc.
    Lawns take time,not just putting a quick fix.
    It will warm up soon,we're see how turf,fairs against the seed.

      Its your lawn,your choice at the end of the day.
      l'm not acting like some turfmaster😄 but l think that lawn was saveable.
      Now you have made more work for yourself.
      Prepping it before laying it.
      It needs making into a decent bed for it to root properly, leaving it to settle for a few weeks plus a fertiliser applied.
      Raking over again then lay the turf.
      Then water.
      Good Luck😀
