Very relatable haha. No matter how good you drive, items always screw you over. I especially hate lightning by now, it ruins so much very often.
And the annoying boo! You can have a red shell coming for you and someone has to steal your defense item!

My theory is that it travels around the track until it reaches you, and then destroys you and you chances of winning
Jarron House I once smuggled a blue shell into first in MKWII, it made a U turn.
Jarron House I believe if you throw a blue shell on first place, it immediatly attacks you. At least that's what I remember from Mario Kart DS.

How to experiance being mario karted if you can't get online:
Go into Race mode.
Pick hard com and frantic items.
Go on either 200 or 150 cc (Normally works on 200)
Go on dragons driftway. (Or whatever the level is called. Maybe try a diffrent level if it doesn't work)
Enjoy.

We all used to loved being in first. Until the blue shells attacked.
Blue shell: Goes to first place but sometimes it goes to second because Nintendo forgot to code their game. Can be avoided by going into second sometimes by backing up.
Red shell: Can be avoided by backing up somehow( i did this in online mode and i won the game lol )
Watching someone get blue shelled in second or fourth place just makes me want to punch whatever Mario character sent that to death
