New Gutters by Leaf Filter

  • We were introduced to Leaf Filter at the 2018 winter Home Show in Sequim, Washington. I had just inspected and cleaned the gutters the day before, during which I realized that we were in dire need of new gutters. Cleaning out the muck and piles of fir tree needles was an unpleasant chore! A mechanism for minimizing the amount of accumulated debris was top on my list for home improvements. So, at the Home Show we signed up for an estimate by Leaf Filter the following week. Dave from Leaf Filter Sales performed a thorough inspection measuring all our gutters. He then presented a sales pitch as to what products Leaf Filter had to offer. Having received a previous estimate for new gutters at a higher price, Dave convinced us that Leaf Filter was our best choice. We decided to replace all the gutters and add the Leaf Filters on the backyard gutters, the north side of the house only where most of the debris from the tall conifer trees accumulate. A week later, Greg, a sub-contractor Leaf Filter installer did a phenomenal job installing the gutters and filters by himself during intermittent rain without assistance in less than one day! We are very pleased with the results, as is documented in this video. Only time will tell if the surgical steel screen Leaf Filters is effective for keeping the gutters clear of debris.

There are at least three roof problems that should have been dealt with before new gutters were installed.
The wet fascia should have been allowed to dry out and then the fascia should have been cleaned and painted to resist water absorption. Wet wood = rotting wood - bad in and of itself but it also attracts bugs. Better yet, the fascia should have been replaced and clad with sheet aluminum.
Which leads to the second problem - there is no sheet aluminum roof drip edge cap/molding. It would go right at the edge of the roof, extend up under the shingles (those are not "tiles" - "tiles" are clay shingles), and they would overlap the top of your fascia such that the top edge of the fascia (i.e., right up under the edge of the shingles) would be under/behind the roof drip edge molding about an inch. The aluminum sheet metal is folded back on itself (i.e., 180 degree bend) about a half inch and would stick out from the fascia about a quarter to a half inch - it supports the edge of the soft shingles to keep them from breaking off over time/under load (e.g., snow). Note the bend at the edge of the shingles in the video.
The third problem is the wet roof sheathing. Again, wet wood is not good wood. The shingles are nailed to the underlying sheathing. Rotting/crumbling sheathing cannot provide a good base for the shingles. This is probably the most serious of the three problems because it runs up the roof at lease a couple of feet from the bottom edge of the roof - this lower portion of the roof is in jeopardy of decay/failure/bug infestation. The whole lower portion of this roof may need to be reconstructed/made water tight. If the sheathing is wet dut water backing up/sitting in plugged gutters, the new gutters and some roof drip edge cap may solve the problem - if the sheathing is not too far gone yet...

Great assessment! If only I had read your comment two years ago... or in advance, were it possible of hiring Leaf Filter. Now I am faced with replacing our entire roof and repairing the wood rot. The estimated cost? $16,000. I expect to post an update video soon showing the failure of Leaf Filter. Thank you for your informative response!

Man it would annoy the hell out of me to have your home with no flashing and long cut shingles causing that sagging bend from the summer heat. But enjoy the new gutters. Also, you have debris behind the gutter because of your gutter spikes coming loose and there being a gap due to having no flashing.

DUMB ME.... LEAF FILTER installed new gutters and gutter guards on my house. After
first rain, the inside gutter seams were leaking. After a week of
daily phone calls, with no response, I wrote a review..... and
surprise.. I get a phone call to schedule the repair. Today was that
day. Guess what... NO SHOW and NO PHONE CALL. Be warned, CUSTOMER
SERVICE basically does not exist. I should have gone with VALOR.

How much did this cost you?
I got a quote today for $37-39 per linear foot. I have 403 feet total according to the sales rep. And after some discounts and if I was to sign up for it on the spot he offered a discount that brought it down to $26-27 per linear foot.
Initial quote over $15k good for one year
Some discounts added on if I sign up for it in the next 30 days around $11.5K
And if I acted now they could do $10.5k
I found this to be very overly expensive.

The leaf filter or any screen mesh work good for the first 2-3 years. After that they get clogged from shingle particles, dust, algae, that form over the top. After that you'll get over flow. This was my situation up here in Minnesota. Leaf blowers Toro, Stihl, and Echo have gutter blower attachments for around $50.00 to blow the gutters out. No need to climb a ladder. Do it all from the ground.

Here's the deal with pricing on gutters. I've been in business for 30 years.
Residential 5" $3.20 a ft no tear down
    Residential 5" $3.40 a ft. with teardown
    Commercial 6" $5.00 a ft no teardown
Commercial 6" $5.20 aft with teardown
Gutter Covers should never cost over $10.00 per ft. on the high end. If you pay anything above these prices your getting ripped off. Period.
    Your welcome.

Warning:; Leaf Filter personnel ARE NOT GUTTER SPECIALISTS and will screw up your gutter system if you let them. This is from personal experience. They recommended a new section of gutter and/or realignment. They could not provide an adequate plan for replacement, so I opted for an adjustment and they screwed it up. I had to drill holes in my gutter and add downspouts were they could not solve the issue. They did a crappy job putting their cheap caps on my gutter and they resisted heavily when I tried to get them to correct their mistakes and honor their commitments made during the initial in-person consultation! In addition, their story change from the initial estimate when they came out a second time. Do not use this service!!!!!! Seattle area...
