It literally sounds like their ip was bought and repurposed. Why? At that point just make a new organization using old talent if you want to go in that direction.
To me this is also what it looks like. They didn’t want to hire Overwatch only creators to pivot away from the game so they went for cheaper creators.
The worst part about the video announcement is that the whole thing is pretty cringe but whatever. That’s the type of audience they are targeting with that “gen z” statement

Sure, the "Local team" angle was fun if you cared, but that's all it was - an angle. Most people were watching online while eating doritos at their computer. No one was "OUTLAWS 4LYFE!!!!!"-ing their way through OWL fandom the way fans have been following Arsenal or the Red Sox since before penicillin and sliced bread.
And, honestly, even if they were, who'd care. If the Detroit Tigers decided to become a Lacrosse team, I'd stop rooting for them because the Tigers are my favorite **baseball** team. If they start playing some other sport, they're not the same thing any more.

This really isn't a suprise since they wanted to make a run in Rocket League when that was rummored all the way back at a pax convention. Them now focusing on a more content and more open esport approach could be done really well as long as they don't mess up in the first year

I was born and spent my younger years in and around Houston. So when I saw Houston outlaws as a team in OWL I knew who I was gonna support. I never looked at it as supporting the org, but supporting the players. I know that's more then likely not how this sh*t works but f*ck it that's how I looked at it. It would have been nice to see them give their team, coach, and fans a proper "goodbye" but whatever. Just know when you see me using an outlaws skin I'm remembering the players and not the org.
Same man. Lived my entire youth growing up in Liberty County so I'm a major Houston fan of all sports. It's a curse I can't break.
Honestly same. I've said it since Profit moved from London Spitfire to Seoul Dynasty. Don't care the franchise or city that the team's name represents (not like traditional sports where the teams and home base are physically based on the city of their team's name). I'll follow wherever the players I like go.

Saying goodbye means you are going and its done. But where do u get the idea they are done with ow? Like im trying to see why people are so mad but all I see is the org moving from the pro scene to the entertainment side of things. And they probably feel like saying goodbye would be the end for them. Instead they chose to rebrand themselves and continue onto bigger and better things.
I was an Outlaws fan since 2018. I have inaugural season merch and even got to meet the team. I stuck with them as a fan through some rough seasons. It was bittersweet to see them finish 2nd this year, but I was proud to be a fan of a team that came so far. This change was such a slap in the face. Not only did they abandon Overwatch and squander some great potential partnerships, they signed a Kick streamer. o7 I’ll remember the good memories and people, but forget Outlaws exists from this point on
How is it a slap in the face. They never said they are gonna stop playing overwatch just they are done in the pro scene which i thought was over way. I could be wrong. But them not saying goodbye and moving to the entertainment side of things is their way of saying i know our OWL chapter is over but there is still more to come. We aren't finished. And its also like they knew the minute they did this their fans would leave. Idk, if you like the org so much and bought all this stuff why would the only thing that kept you loyal would be that they played OW competitively. Like only a few games can ever actually withstand esports for a long time.

outlaws have been scummy for a while now they ran a few giveaways 2021 owl finals and some winners never got their rewards
I feel like the thing that makes this the worst is they did this to us Outlaws fans right after the season ends in a highly disappointing Grand Finals loss. Most of us were really upset with how the OWL season ended and then we get this. Yeah as a native Houstonian and general Houston fan I'm pissed.

You should've seen Outlawcord. Easily one of the most active and pasionate OWLcords in the former League just went silent because they drove out 85% of their most active members. It was a complete meltdown, and one of the new creators decided to flex their Kick partnership while the meltdown was happening. It was a shitshow. I honestly can't believe my team is the first team I'm unfollowing
Also, regarding Joystick, it seems like he didn't want to be a part of this new direction. He's apparently going to "focus on his own content" once his contract is up(This is according to Shadow responding to concerns in Outlawcord)
This just isn't the same team I fell in love with. How sad
This legit reeks so hard of bought account, I sorta refuse to believe this is the same core team behind the OWL team org. Hire new no-name creators, entirely shift focus, drop everything associated with former brand values, loyalty, and roots -including their entire fanbase. Outlaws was bought out change my mind

now I am no Huston fan, I didn't watch OWL until later in OW1, I didn't buy any of their skins, I didn't support any of the players, so I might view it the same way you do
but if I did, it's rather disrespectful, OW is an old game, end of OWL, is not a light event, don't announce your part in it in a cheap sarcastic and almost disrespectful way and it didn't end there, you decided to keep your name that was seen and held by many as one of competition on the highest level, and turn it into content, not just that, you also show your new signs, the video seems clickbait-ish
if you're a new player or a late follower of the now canceled OWL, your reaction is reasonable
i wasn't a Huston fan or supporter, I only was disgusted by the fact that they couldn't take what they once worked so hard for seriously to say a proper farewell, given that it's what gave them a following in the first place

This makes me so greatful that I am a complete Shock fan, since day 1. Their parent org, NRG, really showed they cared about their fans and ther players, etc. They produced really great content on their YT, hosted great watchparties, and signed Emongg. They have never had any controversy around them.
Mayhem is my second favorite.

For anyone wondering what's going on with the Outlaws players, Fearless, Pelican, and Viol2t are all on teams for the Korean FlashOps tournament, so for now they're doing alright. The other players idk. Kinda shitty they didn't even try keeping the players on to make some content for them, seeing as those 3 players have decent sized streams.

Outlaws actually had one of the easiest pathways out of OWL. They were one of the more popular OWL teams and literally just came 2nd not even 4 months ago. They could have just signed Jake and Danteh and used them as their flagship creators. Sad to see such a waste of a franchise.

I think it would be cool if one of these teams would turn into couches together and then do a video series of them each training up a one new member from bronze to their level as a keeping the legacy alive kind of thing. I think that would be a cool way to keep the fan base cheering for their favorite team or I could be wrong, I'm high right now 😅

It wouldn’t have been so bad if they signed Overwatch creators. They’ve literally had ZERO mention of Overwatch since this decision. And blocking Overwatch fans even though they’re the SOLE REASON for the company’s popularity.

they are trying to repurpose their brand, but cut off their audience, which is... the sole capital of that brand. All you have of value are your fans - and you kinda try to switch them from ow e-sports to.... what the fuck? cod streams? and keep insulting and blocking them in the process.
All they had to do was hire on Jake and/or Danteh then come out and say "Thank you so much for supporting us through the OWL journey. It's been wild and fun and we appreciate every bit of support you guys gave. With the end of OWL though comes a new beginning and we hope you'll join us in it as we shift to expand our horizons! Not only will we be covering Overwatch content but also COD and Valorant!......yada, yada". It's so easy that I (a military veteran with a high school degree) can figure it out. Whoever they hired who was behind this should be fired and an apology issued because this is bad.
I think someone internally decided maybe straight Overwatch wasn't the way to go, given the perceived state of Overwatch as a game that's struggling to evolve to a new audience. There was a better way to do this, though. Overall bad launch but I can't say every decision I've ever made in haste was stellar. Good luck to 'em.
Fair enough, but the end of the Overwatch League has been impending for well over a year, even more in subtler ways. So it doesn't seem like a quick decision, they had all of 2023 to make plans for this inevitability.
No one is criticizing focusing on content creation. It is solely about how they are handling it and just straight up burning bridges/good will with their old community to do it.
Watching this video just makes me think of that guy who got an Outlaws tattoo that they used in the inbetween shots during season 2 or 3 of the league, i wonder how he's doing right about now

I used to be a huge Outlaws fan towards the end of 2020 and I’ve stuck through all the bullcrap and kept my hopes up for the team, I felt we had the drive to win…and now I don’t know what to feel anymore about this…it kinda hurts yknow…
The thing i hated most was finding out the middle guy is some random kick streamer who plays cod. But bro was beefing with outlaw fans who were questioning what was happening and acted like a massive dick with a huge ego. Also all this is for clout, its believed the main guy who pushed for it sucks at making content, he has a bunch of awful video titles and video idea and is going to try insert himself as a creator and piggy back off it...
The management direction of the Houston Outlaws was always a travesty, I'm just glad now the average fan who wasn't properly acquainted with their antics can now see how stupid and shitty they are.

Instead, they get:

Important to note, It's not the new people's fault in any way, and I'm sure they're great at what they do.

Outlaws were the team i rooted for, even bought a Jakerat Jersey. That stopped abouuut the same time OWL moved to youtube and 85% of the roster of most teams were not "playing on the NA servers" so to speak. From the comments i've seen, super common opinion. If this organization is moving on and trying to transform OWLemons into content lemonade..i don't understand why this would be upsetting. Just let them fail/dissolve in peace?

This is by far the weirdest transition I've probably ever seen.
This reminds me of when old youtubers from 10+ years ago would fall off and stop making content, so they'd take a deal from some whatever company who wanted to buy the channel and rebrand it just to get the numbers.
Had that happen with a guy I used to watch who covered Spider-Man news back in 2014. Some years later I spotted a channel I didn't recognise in my sub feed, and it turned out to be his channel, but rebranded to something entirely different. Only reason I knew it was his channel was because the deal must've said they couldn't delete his old videos.
