I’ve been learning more about food deserts and how these areas often only have Dollar Trees readily available to them for groceries. Providing these healthier Dollar Tree recipes is a really wonderful service.
Thank you for sharing about making Dollar Tree soups. WE LOVE SOUP!!! You have inspired myself and my son, to experiment on cooking Dollar Tree Meals. I have made the fresh salmon, the breakfast sausage, eggs, bacon, frozen veggies, and frozen fruit. I have gotten Chopped caned tomatoes, and pasta. My mind has been blown away, with Dollar store items, making great meals. Thank you. Next soup!!!
I love soup, even in the summer. Nothing like a fresh vegetable soup in the summer. And potato soup is my all time favorite. Never thought to use those potatoes. I have used potato flakes to thicken soup.
You could get a lot of things cheaper in a regular grocery store, like most canned goods and maybe bigger packages of some other things especially chips. Be careful of their meats, they're loaded with water.
Just a thought, maybe splitting the broth between the potato & taco soups would help the latter. I use an immersion blender on a portion of my potato soup before adding the cheese, and I add some dairy, like milk (evaporated or dry), or sour cream and a bit of butter. I might add some rice to the taco and maybe even the vegetable soup. Adding rice to the soup and stirring it will release the starch, increasing calories(?) but making it seem creamier. I realize this was a Dollar Tree challenge, maybe it was out of the target budget... oh well. Good video and you're right, soup is good anytime. btw, Alison was so cute popping into the "cook with me" video, lol!
I like that you made cornbread muffins. They go well with the soup and are already portioned. Since their chicken broth has so much salt, can you use less and add more water? I can't remember if DT has chicken bullion but a little of that with more water would help. I don't recall seeing any other liquid that could be added to soups. It really makes it a challenge when you can't find compatible ingredients. Someone else mentioned adding evaporated milk to one of the soups and DT usually has that. And didn't you find sour cream there too? Creamy cheese is really a tough one. I would check the chip section to see if there is some kind of queso dip. It would probably be more melty. Yeah I'm making up words now. 🙂 One of the things you've made from DT that I totally enjoyed was the ravioli. I finally found the frozen ravioli and cooked it and put it in the Prego alfredo sauce from a can. Whoever thought of eating alfredo sauce from a can? I was skeptical 🧐 but since you tried it, so did I. The cheese ravioli was huge. I got 2 packages and one can of the sauce. It was so good that I stocked up again. It's a quick easy meal. I know what you mean by warming up. Texas has already hit the 80's. Something I like to have when it's warmer is pasta salad. DT has pasta, jars of mushrooms, black olives, pickle relish and I've even found a jar of roasted red peppers (or pimentos) that would also be good in pasta salad. You could also add canned chicken or tuna and even put boiled eggs in it. And you can add parmesan cheese too. I recently used the chicken nuggets to make lemon chicken. I made the lemon sauce from scratch with lemon juice and other staples in the kitchen. I also made fried rice. DT has rice and I picked up a package of their frozen stir fry vegetables which had peppers, carrots, broccoli and snow peas. A lot of that dinner consisted of DT items. I also added eggs to the fried rice. I really do use a lot of DT items in every day cooking. But I'll look closer next time I'm in DT and think meals.🤔 It's a challenge for sure but DT is starting to step it up. 😉 Thanks for sharing some great ideas!
Another RUclipsr I watch raves about those Hungry Jack potatoes. The 12 minutes with the water in them just sitting is the rehydrate them. Would a taco seasoning packet maybe be a good idea for the Taco soup instead of the seasonings you used? How about tomato juice or V-8 instead of water? What about using one of the hamburger meat patties in it as well? Thanks for sharing your budget friendly meal ideas with us. ❤️
Everyone I know uses taco seasoning in their taco soup, lol. I make my own, so I can say I do the same 😂 But it's an easy way to get that flavor 👍 And the best taco soup I ever made started with me trying to figure out how to use a bag of frozen meatballs that weren't so great tasting, lol. So I diced them up into a soup that graduated into taco soup by the time I was done 😁
You’re ‘lucky’ the Tree didn’t have any canned potatoes, the hash browns are good in a bunch of recipes... Excellent episode about soup and idkw but once in awhile I’ll run into cheddar cheese that doesn’t melt very well and in thinking about it I would say it’s usually the less expensive brands. For a low carb dish, you could make an egg casserole with milk, frozen spinach and that frozen pepper onion/pepper mix, along with cheese (hopefully it melts nicely haha...) and hit that recipe with a lot of spices like onion and garlic powder, red pepper flakes...
Thank you so much for these healthy soup recipes. What I also like is that the recipes don't take a long time to cook cuz sometimes I don't feel good and so when I do cook I don't want to stand at the stove 2 long.
I used to love soup, but had some of the blandest nasty Progresso soup no flavor, I added some seasoning you could barely taste it now I’m not a soup fan 😂😂 I guess I will have to make my own.
It's not exactly healthy, but one of my favorite soups is just peeled and cut potatoes, butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Last time I made it, I didn't have milk, so I just added a lot more butter and some water instead. I also had green onions in the fridge that I needed to use, so I topped it with that. Delicious, filling, and hearty. You can make soup out of anything and it's so comforting. I also keep my veggie and meat/bone scraps in the freezer because I hate throwing stuff away. When I have enough, I just boil them and balance out the flavors as I go. Basically free homemade stock and very little waste, too My gram also makes lima beans or navy beans from dried in a similar way to the potato soup I was describing. It's more like beans in gravy than broth, but it's great. Dried beans and lentils are great if you have the time because they're a fraction of the price, but obviously not everyone has the time so canned are great, too. Save your bean liquid from the can or from soaking btw! It can be used for so much stuff and it's delicious
for the taco soup add a pk of taco seasoning mix not all those other seasonings and for the chicken broth make your own from the chicken and add your own seasonings to tast becouse when you add chicken broth and then all the other seasoning thats a lot of salt
Why not just go to the normal store buy lentils for a dollar. A bag of carrots for a dollar fifty and some broth. You can probably buy fresh veggies for cheaper then the pack of frozen ones. Good suggestions though, thanks.
Hi there, please read the blog post in the description. =) I COULD go to another store; but these videos are made for people who don't have regular access to grocery stores.
I used to love soups but while pregnant and afterwards and still now . Nothing I do not eat I only have our traditional called ,’ kuksu’ a Maltese dish
I think you'd have better success with the cheese melting of you added a slurry of milk and a little flour to the potato soup, let it simmer a bit then add the cheese on low heat. I know it will add a little but more calories but it will help the cheese emulsify a little bit and be less grainy.
You literally have me challenginf myself to make Dollar Tree meals! I enjoy it.
I’ve been really into soups lately!!
I’m a fan of soup 365. I make batches at a time, freeze single portions, and clean out my fridge with little to no waste.
Those soups look really delicious!
I love soup. Thanks for sharing great ideas.
I want to try the potato soup, it looked good.
Great soup ideas and recipes Jamie! Thanks for sharing. I love taco soup! 😀 🌮 🍲

Awesome!! It really is amazing what you can find at Dollar Tree!
Soup is one of my favorite meals...especially homemade soup. I eat soup all year long and there are some awesome cold soups for summer weather.
I love soup, even in the summer. Nothing like a fresh vegetable soup in the summer. And potato soup is my all time favorite. Never thought to use those potatoes. I have used potato flakes to thicken soup.
These soups look delicious!
OMG! One week it snowing in the next week it hits 80. Looks like it's going to be a crazy year for the weather all the way around
Great idea using the salsa for the taco soup!
Thank you for these soups. They look so good and now that I am buying a little used car, I’ve go it to learn to go on a Dollar tree diet!!! 😊

These soups looked delicious 😋
Thank you for soup ideas. I love soups too
My husband loves the hash browns from the $ tree.

Thank you for this, Cindy! All good suggestions!
It’s probably mild cheddar because it doesn’t melt as well as medium or sharp. But looks yummy.
I didn't realize that, thanks! I'll pay more attention to that. =)
Looks good
A can of refried beans in the taco soup instead of chicken would help thicken it up and make it heartier.
I like that you made cornbread muffins. They go well with the soup and are already portioned.

Thank you for the ideas! Yeah, I could have split up the broth between soups and added more water. That really would have helped with the sodium.
i do love you page i watch eveyday

Question? Could i use Velveeta instead for the potatoe soup
You probably could, and it would probably melt a bit better. =) Not sure how much to use... maybe 8 ounces?
@@NoGettingOffThisTrain ok thank you and ill just change the calories to the 8oz.
I used to love soups but while pregnant and afterwards and still now . Nothing I do not eat I only have our traditional called ,’ kuksu’ a Maltese dish

Think the Cheese may be Low Fat.
I live in Ohio too!
Do you live close to a Rulers?
I had to look that up! There's a couple within 30-40 minutes of me, it looks like!
Why do you drain your vegetables rather than using it instead of water? I can see washing the beans, but others no.
Mainly to control sodium. =) I'm not against salt, but I do like to control how much we eat.
