In this video, I compare the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini keyboard to the Akai MPK Mini MK3 keyboard. This video will help you decide which one is right for you. These are two of the best budget midi keyboard controllers available right now and the Akai MPK Mini MK3 is one of the most popular. But the features of the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini keyboard make it a better purchase in my opinion (for most people). So watch this video to find out if the M-Audio oxygen Pro Mini keyboard is better than the Akai MPK Mini MK3 keyboard. I go through the features, the key feel, drum pads, DAW compatibility and features, note repeat, chord and arpeggiator features and more.

1:30 on the Akai mpk mini mk3 with long press "full level" button until the screen changes. Then you can adjust it by knobs. To save it long press again the "full level".Default settings: v1=24.0_v2=06.0_v3=04.0_v4=02.4_black bal=0.7x
Thanks for sharing this!
You're welcome. Great content!
Keep it up mate!
who got time that
what do each v1-v4 correspond to though?
I don't really know what that means. Here is my setting v1=30.8_v2=08.0_v3=05.8_v4=01.4_black bal=1.6x just feels and sounds better on my opinion.
Great to see both controllers side by side for the size comparison. I think I'm going to stick with my MPK Mk3 for its compact size, it fits perfectly in a little space left of my computer keyboard on my desk. The Oxygen would probably be too wide in my particular case. For most users, the extra keys and functionality are probably worth it, though.
I think this convinced me to sell off my MPK mini and buy the Oxygen Pro. I never really liked it all that much anyways and its for all the reasons the Oxygen Pro seems to counter. I'm personally excited to try out a keybed that doesn't feel like I'm having to hammer it.
How are you liking the Oxygen Pro?
akai's key board made me sell it,,,,
You can adjust the velocity curve of the mpk mini. Just hold the full level button for a few seconds and adjust the values with the knob.
@@JC-fj7oo top comment
That’s what I did here in uk the Oxygen pro is £89 I definitely buy it soon
How would the Oxygen Pro Mini compare to something like the Novation Launchkey Mini MK3???
asking the right question
it looks like the Oxygen Pro Mini was inspired by the Launchkey Mini Mk3, but sports different DAW controls, otherwise, the Launchkey Mini looks to be mostly the same
how well they actually work with the DAWs they are configured for is a different story, and build quality can't be discerned from papers and pictures, but I would bet that the Novation is a bit better built, the Oxygen Mini's build is not that great, the Native Instruments M32 is also better built, boasts a bit more and better navigation within Cubase and Ableton, and has the better keybed
I've been trying to decide between these two as well. Can't find any comparisons online
get the novation m-audio gear is hot garbage
These have nothing to do with each other, this has been the reason I pressed the video, so glad the first comment I found was yours haha
next: OXYGEN PRO MINI and NOVATION LAUCNCH KEY MINI MARK III Please!!! I use logic but I can't decide
bruh, mk2? not even 3?
mk3: just don't. it is extremely sensitive both the keys and the pads but you cannot control touch sensitivity (confirmed by googling and reddit novation answer).
also the arp while versatile is sometimes falling over its feet.
would sell mine instantly were it not for the mini form factor. but would never buy it again.
@@Eleni_Be well, I spent a lot of time choosing my midi. Finally choose akai mk3, and it's good. Can control sensitive of keys.
did not take Novation because it was flimsy and small pads. and Arturia is just old, albeit very good. Joji also used akai mk2, this also influenced the quality and trust of my choice;)
I also was choosing between the new oxygen 49. then I realized that I don't write midi patterns so often and I don't go somewhere too often. I still doubt whether I need a big one, though 2 months with akai, because I will soon be switching to a new macbook, and then I can leave the house more often
Could you please do a comparison between Oxygen Pro Mini, Arturia Minilab Mk2 and the Novation Launchkey Mini Mk3?
Would love this.
Yes please, exactly what I need.
He already did minus the oxygen. He's saying this is the best budget "mini" keyboard
Hi Sanjay, yes I am going to get a midi, and I am vascillating between launchkey and oxygen pro mini... It'd be very helpful, thanks
@@palg8091 look at their manuals online, see if the difference in DAW controls (small difference) can swing you one way or the other, unless the Oxygen Pro Mini covers a DAW that the Novation does not
Have you looked at the Native Instruments M32? Best one of the bunch, I say, unless you want the chord, arp, and scale functionality of the M-audio. Of which you can probably get better through free VSTs or built-in functions of some DAWs anyway.
Thanks, Sanjay. I just got my Oxygen pro mini and have been searching for reviews like this. I chose it because of the 32 keys. I'm a piano player and was looking for a compact, portable MIDI keyboard that had more than 25 keys but was small enough to carry around in a backpack.
I am a piano player like you. Is oxygen pro mini a good choice.
Is M-Audio Oxygen pro mini not compatible with Garage Band?
This definitely reinforced everything I don’t like about my Akai Mini.. going to give the Oxygen a shot for sure
Let me know what you think of it
Same here. And my fingers are too big for Akai mini... I keep hitting extra keys when trying to play.
@@jayfiya5230 you not alone lol we in same board well was I know this old video 😂
@@jayfiya5230Aren’t the keys the same size on both? Just more of them on the Oxygen…
Hey Sanjay the faders work well with logic
You just need to go to the "controller assignments" and change the limit from the initial value 64 to 127.
Ah! Thank you for that!
2nd that. Tyvm.
Can the faders work as midi cc controller?
Fader fix for Logic - from Thomas Roscoe ruclips.net/video/OgMIVrmsJB0/видео.html
Was that the only issue with Logic?
i know this is really stupid, but where did you get those balls, they look grat fro squishing and fidgeting. Btw I plan on asking the oxygen pro mini for x mas. my final decision always end up on this channel, your really reliable. THNX
Hej😀. What's the deal with Garageband?
Amazing video Sanjay! Was waiting for this comparison. The Akai MPK Mini MK3 is an excellent midi keyboard as far as portability, size, weight, knobs and drum pads are concerned, whereas the M Audio Oxygen pro mini provides much better features and functions for the same price, such as the auto-mapped DAW controls & plugin parameters, Smart Chord mode, Smart Scale mode, pitch and modulation wheels, a MIDI Output port, faders and semi weighted keys.
This was a great review, however what I'm missing here is a brief comparison of all the software, sample packs, and other stuff software that comes with both keyboards. I will look at the full review of the Oxygen but the MPK comes with a load of things that seem to be important for beginners who want to get a decent start. I know, it's probably not gonna be long and one wants more. But it's a starter kit and it should be reviewed as such. If that's also the case for the Oxygen, the race would be much closer.
The Oxygen comes with a bundle of software too though..
@@aster6000 actually, the Oxygen comes with exactly the same software bundle as the mpk mini (in Ilok it's even refered to as the "mpk software bundle")
I got the oxygen pro m32 and it’s my new favorite controller. Has all the functionality I was looking for (scale mode, chord mode, DAW controls) plus the keyboard layout is just genius for a controller of its size.
I really love the M32 as well
It's funny how pre-mapped presets are selling points these days. I remember programming the controls for DAW manually (which was a pain, of course). I mean I also don't like to invest time into programming a device, all I want is to plug and play the thing. So it's not a complaint, more like an observation.
Things like mackie control and preset configurations are great. Especially if you're moving between one DAW to another, but you can't beat a custom script.
Yeah, it's time consuming, but, for me personally. Having to barely use the GUI in my DAW at all is very nice. As there are no limitations to what I can and can't do. Where MC and brand assigned presets have there limitations. Mind you, I am using a full control surface along side a launch key mini for scene control.
i think ima ask for an oxygen pro instead of an mpk mini for christmas. Thank you!!!
Oxygen Pro Mini does not work properly with GarageBand. Can't use rec/play, faders etc. That's because Pro Mini does not have preset for GarageBand, but other keyboards from Pro series have it.
Has anyone managed to create custom preset that will work with Pro Mini + GarageBand?
Thanks for the video! How does the Oxygen Pro Mini compare to the Arturia Minilab MkII?
minilab mkII comes with good software but thats it. dont like the encoders personally. the pads arent fun to hit. launchkey mini mk3 from novation is the one for me. has midi out
@@zoned7609 better Novation Launchkey mini MK3 than the Oxygen mini pro? Why? That's my doubt right now
@@Ginkore the main difference (going by just the manuals), is the little bit different DAW controls on the M-Audio
it's up to you what else you need out of these
I’ve had the MPK mini for a bit, but the oxygen pro has everything I’m missing from the other one. Definitely switching them out ASAP
thats nice and all but i've already decided on the ni komplete m32
that's the best
Hi Sanjay. Thanks! Awesome video as usual! By the way to change the velocity curve of the Akai mini mpk3 I also found the solution in a forum and I tested it. Long press the full level button for a few seconds and then use the k2 knob to change the v2 value that is the one controlling the velocity curve. Changing it from 06 to about 12 or more really changes the keyboard sensitivity. When you have done your changes long press full level again to get back to the normal mode. It is still a mystery what are the v1, v2 and v4 variables for. I’m gonna find out ;) By the way if you accidentally mess up the values these are the factory defaults:
V1: 24.0
V2: 06.0
V3: 04.0
V4: 02.4
Black bal: 0.7x
The other Vn values seems to affect other parts of the velocity curve (starting from v4 for the lower velocities to the v1 for the higher velocities). The Black bal value seems to affect the relative balance in sensitivity between black and white keys. I think this is because the black keys have more mechanical resistance than the white ones.
Really? Nice thanks for sharing that
Hello,
I am not an English speaker and your video is considered Vietnamese.
The translation into French is therefore incomprehensible.
Could you please arrange for your video to be recognized as English.
Thank you.
i made a big mistake that I listened to you. Oxygen Pro Mini have many simple problems like pads don't work in fl studio for example.
They do work. It's just complicated to set it up
@@gw2156 bro i used everything and this keyboard is just a shit. If u dont have that, just dont talk. Btw wtf is that shitty comments from u in all oxygen videos? Guess someone got new work
Your review is honest, detailed, and well researched. Thank you, Sanjay C.
Really? he gave a ball to the oxygen instead of googling how to change the velocity of the key on the akai.
He also didn't seem to know that the akai has a program control button that makes the pads able to trigger clips and scenes or stop or start, they can also send cc messages to jump to specific settings.
If you're good at making music neither of these devices are all that different.
You're right - the music will sound the same....but the efficiency in making that music may be different.
@@SanjayCPreach it, efficiency is the key here and that's why even though for my course I have to learn and use Pro Tools but when it comes to making podcasts for myself I use studio one cause it's just faster for me and there more efficient.

@Jose I'm also gonna buy this soon, best wishes for your journey bro :)
do not get the minilab mark 2, get novation launchkey mini mk3
I have just bought an M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini from a reseller here in the UK. I tried to follow the information put out by M-Audio but the installation is a complete nightmare!!!!! My DAW (whatever that means!!) is Cubase and my platform is the iMAC with the most up to date o/s. I was able to update the firmware in th unit and download and install the Software Manager. However, when I tried to set-up the unit to run with my Cubase the instructions shown on the M-Audio site bear no resemblance to what is showing on my MAC's screen the net result of which is that whilst the "piano" keys on th unit will activate the notes when I call up Halion Sonic SE on a new track, none of the other function keys or pads work as controllers to the software. I also had installed the Hybrid 3, Mini Grand and Velvet apps but could not find any way to get the activation keys and when I started Cubase I got error messages for each application that said they could not be loaded into Cubase as they are 32 bit. Really, really fed up and frustrated by this experience and, when I try to contact M-Audio Support I get the message that my log-in is invalid despite the fact I had been through the registration and carried out the earlier download and installation. Not at all happy or impressed.
DAW is a digital audio workstation and is the program you use to make music
Ordered the M-Audio Oxygen Pro mini!
Thanks for the video. Been looking at mini keyboard controllers for a while now.
I’m a guitar player and wanted to be able to play around with different sounds.
Preferably small keyboard 32 keys over 25 keys with decent feel.
Simple integration with Logic. Drum pads, and some tools for beginners to keys.
Looks like the m-audio fits the bill perfect. If I later want to learn more piano, then I’ll look into an 88-key.
Thanks! Glad you agree with me!
Bro how is the m audio pro mini now?
Oxygen Pro Mini doesn’t support GarageBand? Complete Newbie here sorry lol
It does, don't worry.
Can you please made a review of the Behringer X-TOUCH One? 🙏🙏👍
I just got my mpk used for $40. Im happy with it.
Awesome Review Sanjay...😍😍😍👍😊💙💙 am the 5th person to hit the like button..😀😀
Thanks Philip!
Does it work with GarageBand?
this video made me buy the oxygen pro but i had no idea how diffuclt it would be to set up the drum pads onto fl so each pad plays a different sound instead of the same kick in a different pitch and the fact i cant even find a tutorial from anyone doesnt help. if anyone knows how to help id really appreciate it because i only got this for the drum pads.
too bad that OXYGEN don't have infinite knobs :/
Yeah, the one thing they should've done
I think the m-audio lights are cool. 🔥
M-audio oxygen pro mini vs native instruments m32
chord, arp, and scale functions on the Oxygen Mini are universal, on the M32 they are only for the Komplete Kontrol plug-in manager, and then better keybed and build quality on the M32, better navigation controls on the M32, and the Oxygen Mini can be used as a hardware synth controller while the M32 cannot
DAW compatibility differs, too
I got the MPK MINI MK3.... Reason.... I wanna be like Taetro.. lolz. Great video my dude.
@Sanjay C Now we need a shoot out between the OXYGEN PRO MINI and the Novation LaunchKey Mini MK3. I have the Mk3 and i'm wondering if the OXYGEN PRO MINI has less menu diving.
Still lots of menu diving on the Oxygen...BUT it depends on what feature you're trying to get to. The oxygen has lots of easy to access buttons so it makes it easier.
Menu-diving? Try a Roland JD-Xi, Novation Mininova, or Korg Kross2, now THAT's menu-diving. Oxygen Pro has nothing at all in comparison.
Extremely simplistic and shallow menu structure, too, unlike those very complex lone performance keyboards.
Which keybed is better? Arturia mini lab mk2 or oxygen pro mini?
I got the m-audio one because it got those sliders which can be useful for me
In my opinion, the Akai MPK mini is for ppl who produce Pop, Hiphop, and EDM while M audio oxygen Pro mini is good for those who write orchestral and jazz music as a modulation wheel, 32 keys and faders will be very handy for that genre. although Maudio is the winner as you don't know what you may have to use in the future.
Good channel, I want to know if in 2022 it is still worth buying this M-audio CODE25 keyboard used, I like its design, I have retired from music and equipment for 12 years, I am an electronic engineer, I always look for damaged equipment to buy it cheap, well something damaged 100% of the time I repair everything, I am not afraid of anything defective, no key or fader, amplifier, rust, etc. Well, they are selling me for $75 without a box, he lives near me and he guarantees it's good, but the real help is that I know very little about Banks, Loops, Software, I've only seen a thousand hours of how they do it, but CODE25 I need it because of the practicality of the side buttons, I will be singing and I will have the keyboard on the side to use the pad and I will play the guitar solos with the 25 keys. Honestly, what would you buy, aesthetic versus basic functional. Greetings.
hey please compare novation launchkey mk3 and oxygen pro mini
love your vids
So now I have to try and decide between these 2 and a arturia minilab mk2 😒 hmmm choices choices. Although I think the minilab mk2 was slightly swaying me because it comes with ableton and I wanted to try it out. Hmm let me waste a few more hours trying to decide lol. 🤣😂🙌🏾
From personal experience (I have the mkii akai), anything beats the akai, I personally would recommend the Alesis v25 or vmini instead of the akai .the Alesis v line has simpler controls similar to the akai, easier for beginners, although the m audio looks great for someone who is more serious. The akai just has bad software and the keys feel horrible, and overtime, develop what I call 'phantom notes' when a key acts like it's still held down even when you have let go. Thanks for the video Sanjay!
The Mk3 is a huge improvement over the Mk2, though (I've owned both). The keybed, pads and knobs are all hugely improved. Even the plastic case feels sturdier.
On the Mk2, the plastic keys themselves act as fulcrum. The keys bend to provide the "spring" force and resistance, and they're prone to snapping off. On the Mk3, the keys are properly sprung and feel more solid (though they're still small and quite thin).
@@JimmiG84 well thats good to hear!
@@JimmiG84 Oxygen Mini's keys are also thing, though fully mechanical, unlike the Axiom Air Mini with its bendy keys. NI's M32 has the best keybed of the bunch, though.
I am in for MAUDIO. Midi out jack and 12 presets of fully configurable CC is a winner. I can acces Volca Sample and model Cycles, or any other from one controller. It is less intuitive tha LaunchKEY mini MK3 but i am going to take the effort.
Oxygen pro vs Minilab 3 video?
Yes pls
I have both, and basically I prefer the oxygen. But in Ableton Live, when I manually map a knob or a fader, it doesn't overwrite/replace the previous automatic mapping. So it map 2 features at once, and this is a prbolem. Anyone knows how to solve it?
Idk can you save it as a user preset? Or is there a way to configure it in any accompanying software app?
Unfortunately, the M-Audio Oxygen Pro MINI doesn’t come with GarageBand support.
Logic settings issue with the faders.
I had a Hammer 88 Pro - too may issues, though the keybed was fantastic. And M-Audio support was great.
i went with a Novation 88, but wanted a small desktop controller.
I just bought the Oxy Pro Mini and couldn't be happier.
I needed faders for orchestral sample control.
I don’t like the Akai.
It feels cheap and it lacks some decent features than the oxygen mini. I think im going to put the m audio on my Christmas wish list
Thanks Sanjay C 💙

Wrong choice mpk works exactly like a mpc
I Really Like your reviews, but on Akai you missed something really important that I want to share with everyone. I purchased the Akai MPK225. Your reviews are spot on, regarding their quality. Where Akai falls short is with the software that comes with their controllers. VIP is NOT COMPATIBLE with MacOS Big Sur! For me this is a big deal, because staying current on a computers OS, means a higher level of safety to my work and my hardware. The only software that worked was Akai’s Beats software, the other software that comes with the purchase was not compatible with Big Sur, and or had price tags monthly or full purchase costs. In others words it’s NOT FREE! So keep this in mind.
I do have to say that Akai’s tech support on the phone was very helpful and polite, they are just in the dark as to knowing OS compatibility. If I had known that VIP was incompatible with MacOS Big Sur, I would not have purchased Akai , I would have stayed with Native Instruments S25. As I hate spending time doing remapping.
Keep up the work with the great reviews!!
First!!!! Cool. Let this be a record of how jobless I am.
Second 😂
lol
You could be at work on the toilet...
Is not Oxygen Pro Mini compatible with Garage band?
Yes, like pretty much any midi keyboard/controller. All it's doing is sending MIDI info to the DAW.
I think it also has preset midi mapping for garageband, so if you select it, the knobs and faders should control the most convenient parts of the DAW that you will use often. Though this can be easily configured
@@gw2156 thank you so much for the reply :)
Great video! If you’re going to do the larger Oxygen 25 key version, if you can, you should also compare it to the Akai MPK 25 which has better keys and features than the Mini.
I'll check it out!
the oxygen pro is 30% more expensive here than the mk3. Is it worth the extra spendinh for a begginer?
Depends where you look. The price can very quite a bit. But yes, the extra features and the scale mode and such are worth it
Although scale mode isn't used much by most people
I have so much trouble getting a consistent pad velocity on Akai MPK mini mk3. I have midi anxiety now lol. I always have to come back with the mouse to drag my velocities. in Akai, The black keys on it are tougher than the white. Ugh! Reason why I looked for a video like this.

Almost every keyboard out there beats the Novation Launchkey Mini keybed. Oxygen Pro as well. Much better
We need an updated best budget midi keyboard list
all AKAI MPK MINI keys are fragile. its easy to broke, and if u broke it, u can glued it but it brokes again, and there is no sparepart to change it from AKAI. wasted and junk.
Im gonna go with the oxygen mini cos it has keys, pads, knobs AND faders. Gonna need them faders for vocal rides and certain types of automation.
Its a shame tho cos the mk3 is better looking
I’m all honesty. The Akai is really not a very good MIDI Keyboard. Sure it’s great for beginners cause it’s cheep and dose the job. But I really don’t have anything good to say about it other than that. Especially compared to it’s competition.
The m-audio knobs are NOT rotary encoders!!! Thank God!!!!!! Buyin for that only. I hate encoders. If I want to slowly turn a knob for a month, then sure, rotary encoder. Quick movements are worthless. The chord thing is great for synthwave too... i think I will use it for that. Easy choice for me. Thank you!!!!
Akai was the only keyboard being sold in the store close to my home.
What about online?

Looks like I’m not the only one who made that mistake
I was excited for a sec there, but it's almost twice the price over here on amazon, dafuq.
MPK has the PLAY version which destroys all competition.
Was looking into the Akai when your video popped up in my Recommends. *Wow am I glad it did.* The M-Audio Mini has everything I was wanting that the Akai doesn't, including an extra octave of keyboard!! Thanks for a great and detailed video comparison; the M-Audio is now at the top of my short list to buy.
This akai mpk is simply a complete scam, not even my 2-year-old son's keyboard is so bad, this plastic union system always breaks.
Akai sucks. I bought a half dozen MIDI controllers over the years and can only stand to use them about a week before I have to return them. Between crappy pads, and ability to connect to software I just can’t stand them.
Both are made by the same parent company, inMusic Brands. 😒
Whatever you use that you can understand and get your ideas off the way it sounds in your mind is what you should use
True
MPK wins cos it's got red on the side panels and so, adds colour to the abyss that is my desk (that and my Focusrite are the only "non black" items on in the studio").
Akai comes in a all red version too
Hey Sanjay.. On the Akai MPK mini MK3, Click on full level for few seconds. You will see v1, v2 etc on display. Then you can change the knobs to change sensitivity. Found this in a forum.. i dont know , i feel there may be other un documented features
It’s true I also found it in a forum and I tested it. I’m gonna find out ;)
