I remember walking with my Mom to the Polish Deli-Butcher to buy kielbasa and other goodies for Easter Basket Blessing. Passaic, New Jersey 🎉.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us. The dishes are very similar to what is served on a traditional Ukrainian Easter breakfast. Hard boiled eggs topped with freshly grated horseradish is often served. This year, Ukrainian Easter, also known as "Orthodox Easter," is being celebrated five weeks later with Easter Sunday being on May 5, 2024 with many of us celebrating at that time. I wish you and Grandpa a very Happy Easter!!

Greetings and blessings Grandma and Grandpa ! What a great idea to send such a care package. Very nice! I never heard of eating horseradish for breakfast. It must be a northern thing along with that meat. We are having a mostly cold Easter meal. I flew up and had to order the Easter bread (Baska). So Easter eve I am making my mother Jumbo lump crab cakes with stuffed potatoes and melted butter and then watching the Ten Commandments. Easter we traditionally had a mostly cold mid day meal growing up so now that I am older and my mother is 87, I will be slaving in the kitchen the next few days to make the following for our after church Easter meal: Spiral sliced sweet ham, potato salad, baked beans, stuffed eggs, sweet corn, Easter bread, home made pierogis in onions and cabbage and for dessert a blueberry tart, coffee and tea. I would love to have your bread recipe! And I would love to taste your horseradish as I enjoy it on a ham sandwich at Easter. I think I forgot to pack the sunshine to bring up here😊…. Hi Brian as always we enjoy your comments. Glad to hear you had a safe trip up and will be cooking for your Mom. Everything you are making sounds delicious. We will be having our Polish Easter breakfast which is kielbasa, ham, hard boiled eggs, homemade bread and horseradish. Everything is served cold and the hot horseradish is for the meat and hard boiled eggs. We all look forward to this once a year tradition. I remember when I first saw the movie the Ten Commandments. My Aunt who lived in Brooklyn took me and a cousin of mine to see the movie at Radio City Music Hall. It was wonderful we saw the stage show first and the movie right after. I still have the souvenir program all about the movie that my Aunt purchased for each of us. After we went out to eat at a nice restaurant. It was a thrill for us living such a different life on Long Island and seeing the city and all the tall buildings etc. We hope you and your Mom had a very Happy Easter and you have a safe trip home. @@GrandmaFeralWow ! Grandma, my Grandmother took me and my cousin to Radio City Hall to see a Easter show and afterwards a tour behind the stage, it was fascinating. Then we also ate out and then she took us to the top of the Empire State Building, I still have the dryer holly leaf I took from the plant outside on the top. It was all amazing but I was little, maybe 10 or 11 years old. I have a souvenir turtle that moves when you touch it from Hong Kong from a little gift shop we went to next to radio city that she purchased for me. Those were wonderful years. We had a nice Easter and enjoyed the movie, but I don’t think I would ever do it on the network again because every 15 minutes it was a commercial. I should’ve just rented it.😮 lesson learned…. Thank you for always taking the time to write and I look forward to seeing you both in the next video…. God Bless you both ….

Hi Debbie this kielbasa is fully cooked when you buy it so you can send it through the mail with no problems. We send the package’s priority mail so they receive them in a few days in perfect condition. We have been doing this for years. If you were to buy the fresh kielbasa it is uncooked and I would never send it through the mail. Glad you like the palm cross that I made. Everyone looks forward to receiving one. I have shipped Kielbasa, carried it on planes, traveled in a car with it and nothing you can do will stop the wonderful smell of Kielbasa from getting out from its wrapping. 😂 I have all my Polish goodies ready for Easter such as kielbasa, Bobka, horseradish, chrusciki, pierogis, etc. Where did you get the Kielbasa, as my daughter told me there's Polish Eagle in Bethpage and I think she went to the Polish Pork Store in Commack. Well, my friends we wish you both happy., healthy and blessed Easter. ❤

@@GrandmaFeralHi Grandma, good to know some places closer to home to find some great kielbasa (and presumably other Polish goodies). I've usually had to reserve it for my trips out east, then tack on a detour to Riverhead's Polishtown.

My inlaws used to make homemade fudge, cookies and candy at Christmas and then mail it to us by ground USPS.
It was a nice thought/gesture but no matter how carefully they bubble and tissue wrapped inside the box when we received it all or most of the cookies were mostly crumbs and 50% of the candy was broken and the fudge would melt .... I told them yes I know you want to but just don't because usually it just all went into the trash and it was always over $20 -30 on postage plus their time and effort and cost.
Ya know I'd rather just get the card and hand written letter, or even a long phone call as last resort.
Hi we have been mailing out these packages for years and the family members have told us they have arrived in perfect condition. We send
out lots of Christmas packages also every year with cookies, glass bottles etc. enclosed and never had a problem. We always send out all the packages priority mail and everyone receives them in a few days. Sorry to hear your items received did not arrive in perfect condition. You brought back memories of when I was a kid attending an Easter mass at an Eastern Catholic church. It was exciting to help fill a special basket to be blessed by the priest. There was butter shaped like a lamb, kielbasa, paska, eggs, horseradish and other foods I can't remember right now. We covered the basket with a nicely embroidered cloth. I remember another family put a chocolate Easter bunny in their basket. Our friend the 80-something cantor, shook his head and said in his Hungarian accent, "You don't blass bunye rabbits!"
I wished I could have packed my "care packages" to my family as good as you've just shown us. At age 18, I lived far away from my family for the first time to start a career. I missed my family terribly, so I mailed mom and dad goodies for Christmas. They told me in a letter a week later that the huge box of Whitman's chocolates was smooshed!
Anyhow, I'm wishing you and Grandpa a beautiful and blessed Easter.
Hi mrs.g I so enjoyed reading your comment. I forgot about when I was very young maybe five years old. I remember the priest use to come to the house and bless your basket of Easter food. We also would have two nuns from the polish church that would come to the house also once a year. That is when Long Island had very small communities. Today at a few polish churches you can bring your basket of Easter food to get blessed. We have been sending packages for years priority mail and they always arrive in perfect condition. Sorry to hear about the candy not arriving in perfect condition. Growing up my Mom would make packages for her Mom to send items to relatives in Poland. Never food but clothing, soaps etc. At that time the boxes had to be wrapped in brown paper and twine. It took my Mom hours to fill the boxes and you had to itemize everything and place the paper inside the boxes and wrap the boxes. I will never forget how many times she had to wrap that twine a certain way around each box and lift it to make sure the twine would hold up during shipping. Hi Grandma! Got to love some delicious kielbasa and horseradish! I know your family members will be delighted with their gifts. I read elsewhere in the comments some of the locations people mentioned for getting good kielbasa, and I'm glad to know these are closer to home. As you may recall, I grew up out east, so Polishtown in Riverhead is always where I've gone. I remember during my childhood even the regular grocery stores out there always (year round) had chrusciki available, but I don't recall seeing it here in western Suffolk. For Easter, my Italian grandmother always had the bread with colored eggs baked in. I was never a huge fan, but I've gotten it a few times as an adult for the nostalgia. I wish you and yours a blessed Easter!
Hi Patricia all the family members received their packages and as always were thrilled with everything. You mentioned Polishtown in Riverhead. I just heard they will be having the Polish fair this year. We have been to the fair many times but the last time we went it had changed so much. We buy the kielbasa at the Polish Eagle Meat Market at 548 Central Avenue in Bethpage. They carry the chrusciki but they call them angel wings. My Mom made delicious chrusciki. One day she tried to teach Grandpa and I how to make them but we could not make them the way she did. I have to look for her recipe and try them again. Have a Happy Easter. You should have bought a two gallon freezer bag, then you could have fit the whole kielbasa in one bag and ziplocked it fully closed. The two gallon bags are a lifesaver for big and awkward items. I think rhe kielbasa qualifies in that department, lol!
