A lot of naval analysts are saying heavy corvettes and light frigates are going to play THE major role as a mainstay ship even for the largest navies in the near future.
Excellent point. If the ship's hull and superstructure are made more robust, a helo is included, and vertical launch tubes are installed, and top quality radar and surveillance drones, indeed the line between heavy corvette and frigate, and even light destroyer, will be moot. The German-Israeli Sa'ar 6 is optimal for area defense on the sea. And perfect for coastal areas even a few kilometers inland. Not offense oriented like a carrier group. But coordinated with a crack air force, and satellite intell, a superb defensive platform.
Problem with any effort to compare is that "corvette" includes some fast attack missile boats and small yet multimission frigates. Doha class is over 3000 tons and has the excellent long range antiair missile Aster-30 which actually makes it a small AAW frigate. It lacks in ASW of course, I'd say Gowind for example is more all around. As for smaller corvettes Israel also has some Saar with AAW abilities in the size of missile boats.
@John Grigg yeah, it makes sense for China to have corvettes as they will be simply accompanying bigger ships across the strait to Taiwan and offer some support near the coastline. Whereas US Navy wants big frigates at least to accompany aicraft carriers across oceans. Corvettes are value for money, however they are not for long deployments in the ocean and (apart for the bigger ones like the Doha I mentioned) they have limited antiair abilities and/or no ASW capabilities so they are pretty useless in US Navy taskforces. But they are superb for navies operating near the coastline. I think a very good one from this list is the Russian (typical of them to overload a ship with systems). In fact Steregushchiy beat all the top5 corvettes on the list, with ease. Sigma might be a tough opponent in its heavier version but in a similar displacement the Russians are clearly superior.
@John Grigg I know there are good ASW corvettes. Gowind2500 is pretty decent and the Sylver launchers can get Aster (like the Doha does) that are badass antiair missiles, not that MICA (especially in their announced NG version) are bad. I think
Steregushchiy-class corvette more better than SIGMA 9113
Make one video on future project of india defense force. 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
They are going to place our country INDIA as 100000 rank holder due to their hate against us.
Look How they placed World's best Kamorta class Corvette at 10th rank.
Think the Steragutchy class are the best all round package. Add Zircon to that and you one bad ass vessel!
Stereguchiy in russian mrans the guarding one
Only if they are not sitting at the bottom of the black sea
Australia needs corvettes seeming we are not as big as America and have a smaller budget, but live out military
Visby-class looks great but it's has one big weakness - zero air-defense system!
It also has a far inferior radar to that of the Gremyashchiy which wasn't featured on the list, has worse surface to surface missiles, lacks a helicopter hangar and has half the cruising range.
Upgrades are scheduled that will ad AA missiles.
The buzz you rock 🤩
Guess you've forgotten the Israeli SA'AR based on the German K 130 but much more powerful. This should be clearly the number one.
Avante 2200 Corvette from spain un future...
Currently the Avante 2200 has been chosen only for the export market for Saudi Arabia.
The Italian corvette PPX (now DOHA class) was also chosen for the Qatari navy while the French Gowind 2500 for Egypt and Malaysia.
The question is why have the three European nations🇮🇹🇫🇷🇪🇦 refused to build their own corvettes for their navies, but only for export market?
The answer is because we are aiming to build future European EPC Corvettes🇪🇺 which will be the most modern in the world.
Realy no Gowind and no DOHA
