    Can you share some tips on how you do the class management please? 🙏 when there are students with certain behavioural issues and are disturbing the whole class, how do you deal with them?

    • @thecorporateswitch
      @thecorporateswitch  16 дней назад

      Just to preface, my previous school was a girls school & a primary school so the dynamics may be different!
      But for me, presuming you also teach pri school, I think what worked best for me out of everything is to really try to get to talk to these particular kids 1:1, even if it’s just a chat while walking along the corridor or talking to them during recess/ 5min after class, trying to know them and their interests, and what is actually affecting them that makes them act out (e.g usually there’s a reason behind.. like their parents fighting the previous day or a conflict w their friend etc); basically forming a connection with them. & if I scold them during class, I make sure to talk to them after class/after we have both calmed down to understand what caused them to act out and get them to understand why their behaviour was wrong. Having a more personal connection with them really helps for the more difficult students imo, coz they understand I still love them despite the scolding and helps appeal to their conscience when they are misbehaving haha.
      I think i also make sure to start off the year as a strict (but not fierce) teacher, and stick by the rules I set. Also if there are multiple students who are being noisy, make sure to separate them to different areas of the class and sit them beside a more motivated student who can help them coz at that age, environment really matters.
      This was what worked for me, hope it helps!

    Hi! PRAYING THAT YOU ARE STILL ACTIVELY RESPONDING TO COMMENTS HERE!
    Thank you for the tips, blessed to have stumbled upon your video! I am currently preparing for my interview as a PE Teacher for the PGDE. I was wondering, what props or materials did you use for your teaching demonstration? (worksheets, etc.).
    Since i'm teaching PE I already prepared a slide deck based on the syllabus I chose outlining the objective overview and how the lesson will be structured, and i'm already thinking of bringing some cones and balls to demonstrate the movements to the "students".
    Would you say that i'm on the right track? Did you managed to go through your entire lesson plan?
    Based on the email I received, a 5 minute teaching demonstration seems short to cover what I want to cover, and with the interviewers posing as "students" i'm already assuming they will purposely disrupt me to test my class management skills.

    • @thecorporateswitch
      @thecorporateswitch  9 месяцев назад

      Hey there! Thanks for watching and all the best for your interview! 😊
      I’m not too sure for PE teacher interviews per se, but based on my experience for my Science interview, I used a hardcopy interactive teaching chart/poster and prepared questions based on what I wanted the students to learn (I didn’t prepare a w/s for my lesson but a w/s with good questions sounds like a good idea as well) . Yes I think bringing some cones and balls to demonstrate would be good since it’s PE, you’re on the right track I reckon :)
      Iirc, the interviewers participated in the lesson as how students would (e.g. asking relevant/irrelevant qns to what i was teaching) but not physical disruption per se . I think they were looking for how I engaged them during the lesson/and looking at the types of questions I was asking.
      You don’t have to cover the entire lesson per se and they won’t expect you to (coz there’s not enough time). But I would suggest don’t make the slide deck too long as it’s a PE lesson after all (did they mention that you can present slides for your demo btw? Just make sure that’s an available option (like the interview room will have a laptop for you to plug your usb into etc) before you go into the interview!
      I feel that as long as you state the objective of your lesson clearly to the ‘students’ at the get go and then demonstrate the technique/skill you want to teach that matches the lesson objective + make sure you engage and interact with the ‘students’ + do a quick recap at the end to reinforce the initial teaching objective, I think that’d be good.
      Just a disclaimer that I’m recommending the above based on my experience, and not that’s it’s the de facto way of getting in for sure. But I hope this helps and all the best! ☺️

    (Part 2). A school organisation is of follows, School leaders=1 P, 2-3 VPs, Education officers (EOs) ie teachers = HODs, Subject Heads, Teachers, Allied Educators & Education support = counsellors, Special needs, Career counsellors. I thought being hired by a girls school will mean more behaved students. Oh boy was I so mistaken LOL!!!. Lastly the Executive and Administration Staff dept = General office, operations, IT, lab support. Everyone has a Reporting officer. As such my IT dept and the two computing teachers RO's is the HOD ICT.
    Tips to survive school environment:
    Officially my break time is 30 minutes. However I have the luxury of having a flexible break time to avoid the student's recess/lunch time. As mentioned by Krystal in another video that bio break can be a luxury and even less a proper sitdown lunch break. This is even more noticeable if you are like myself being posted in an opposite single gender school where there are limited male toilets (only staff toilets available) since there is zero male students ie zero toilets near the student blocks. Also I cant stress enough the importance of the quality of the canteen in school. My school is located in a location where the public food choices within reach is MEH but the canteen has multiple stalls that caters for my restricted dietary needs. (no prices for guessing which restriction that is lol). So for the most part the only food you have within reach are from the canteen. The advantage of SS&JC that comes with the usually longer working school operation hours is that the canteen is already operational before school starts (breakfast) and still have food for the graduating cohort who will have their second recess/lunch (12.50pm for mine) since they are staying back longer for extra lessons. Also the portion is more 'adult friendly' since it is catered for teenagers. It may seem trivial but environment has a big influence on your motivation&psyche at work. (just look at Google HQ and their free lunch bar).

    • @thecorporateswitch
      @thecorporateswitch  6 месяцев назад

      For some reason, I don’t see the part 1 comment 😕 but what you said is so true, food is so important; definitely need it to fuel the day! & I rmbr finding canteen vendors who wanted to operate in the schools was such a struggle as well, leading to even less food choices 😞 glad you have multiple stalls at least for your dietary needs; but hopefully they’ll build more staff toilets for your next school upgrading 🤪

I have already applied for the May training, and the website states that the interview period is from July 3rd to July 24th.

      I can't tell you when you will receive a notification for sure as that is dependent on the govt, but for me, I was notified of my interview about one week before it took place.
      In terms of the qualifications, it's as per stated on the website but generally for international applicants, you may be required to take an English proficiency test as well. They'll generally look at your educational qualifications and work experience.
      Good luck for your application process! 😊

    Hi there! Thanks for sharing more about the programme. Would like to ask a few questions, if you don't mind!
    1. To what extent should you know everything within the subject's curriculum before the interview and contract stint? I am interested in geography or history but feel that I need some time to fully grasp the whole curriculum. For example, can I enroll knowing only 25% or do I have to already know 100%? Do you also mind sharing your prior education before enrolling into PGDE?
    2. For the contract teaching stint, can it be completed within the 4 months as stated on their website? Or is this a rare occurence since you took a year.
    3. There is a salary range for each teaching milestone, starting from the day you begin your contract teaching stint. Is this a negotiable amount during the interview or pre-fixed solely based on type of educational cert and completion of NS?
    4. Do you get to pick a school that is situated near where you live?

    • @thecorporateswitch
      @thecorporateswitch  Год назад +1

      Hi! Happy to help.
      1) My prior education before PGDE: Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences. For Geog and History it’s a sec school subject so I can’t say for sure but I would say most of PGDE modules are on teaching pedagogy and not really curriculum per se. You will maybe have one or two curriculum mod per subject but iirc they won’t teach you the entire curriculum in detail, it’s more like an overview and perhaps certain things to note for that topic at most.
      That’s my experience for Sci (Pri) at least.
      2) there’s only one intake per year which is December if I’m not wrong. But u can start contract teaching either in January or July. So if u start Jan, u will have to contract teach for 1 year regardless, and if u started in July, u will contract teach for 6 months. Assuming u pass the contract teaching stint, you will enrol in December that year.
      3) I would say that the money salary is given by them and you would not get to discuss it during the interview at all. The interview is purely to select whether you’re suitable to be a teacher and nth to do w salary negotiations. Only after the interview process will HR follow up with an offer for contract teaching + what’s the salary you’ll be paid. You can try emailing HR if you will like to negotiate but I’m honestly not sure how effective that would be.
      4. Nope, you do not get to choose. They’ll try to allocate you based on where you live but you don’t really get to choose per se. Once again, you can try contacting HR if it ends up really far but usually it’s on a school needs basis.
      Hope this helps!

      Hi!
      1) If you’re applying directly as an overseas applicant to a public Singapore school , i would suggest emailing MOE directly to ask wrt your qualifications. www.moe.gov.sg/careers/become-teachers/pri-sec-jc-ci/full-time-trained/apply
      From what I know, most principals who are appointed are within the system already.. you may want to consider applying to independent schools/international schools as well
      2. If you’re looking at public Singaporean schools then it’s via the Ministry Of Education (MOE) website.
      3. I honestly can’t tell you because I never asked my assistant principal for their pay but I doubt it’s lower than teachers imo 🧐
      But take note there’s two type of assistant principal ( we usually call them vice-principals here). One is VP(admin - handles more admin stuff , don’t think you need to be teacher trained per se) and one is VP(prob a trained teacher on the leadership track).
      Hope this helps!

    • @thecorporateswitch
      @thecorporateswitch  2 года назад +2

      Hello! 😊 Contract teaching is one year!
      As for leave, even for full time teachers, there's no leave you can really take per se (unless it's like sick leave etc). The only leave for teachers are during the school holidays (usually 2nd and 3rd week for June and Dec hols after work week). I think they're quite stringent about taking leave during contract teaching especially, so I'll advise against asking to take leave, unless it's really urgent, or special reasons such as wedding leave etc, but gotta check w the School Leaders first definitely!
      Hope this answers your questions 😊

      So there are a few pathways to take, check this website out. (And then press read more for the rest of my comment haha)
      www.moe.gov.sg/careers/become-teachers/pri-sec-jc-ci
      You can apply for teaching sponsorship right after o levels, but this is mostly for art/Mother tongue/ music, and I think it’s more to be a pri school teacher.
      For sec school, if I’m not wrong, I think you’d need to finish your A levels/IB/poly dip and then apply for NIE teaching scholarships to do NIE as an undergrad student. My sec school teacher friends are mostly NIE scholars. If you take PGDE, it’s also possible to apply to be sec school/JC teacher but I think it really depends on your level of education/undergraduate major and work experience at that point. They hired fewer sec school/JC teachers when I was in NIE compared to Pri school teachers but it may have changed depending on needs. You get to indicate your preference of which level of students you want to teach but in the end, it depends on the needs of MOE in that hiring year. Do you know which subject you want to teach?
      For me, I did A Levels, then did undergraduate bachelor degree in pharmaceutical sciences, then I applied for PGDE(pri).
      P.S don’t worry about the interview/stint! Take the stint as the real test to decide if you want to be a teacher or not, and it really differs from school to school. As for the interview, if your passion shines through/be confident, you’d be okay 😃
      I hope this helps! Lmk if you need any clarification!
      It’s amazing that you want to be a teacher at such a young age! I wish you all the best☺️
