06:02 - This is the point I added it to my cart. That attack character made me jazz so hard. Literally been trawling the whole Internets for a compressor that has that very attack character/flavour for an album I'm mixing for someone right now. Thanks so much for the video!
@Fortnum Sound Nice! Congrats. :)
This was a Great tutorial and excellent breakdown of the BSS DPR-402. One side note, in the drop down list on choice 11, Waves ought to get the spelling right on Expander vs. Exapnder. You can see this at 14:45
I know its an old tutorial, but for those new people...@7:06 ONLY the attack and release are click stop. All other knobs can be dialed in with values in between the click stop points. Great content for sure Mr. White. I just got your Advanced Mixing Course yesterday- and it's great!
I know this an older video now but have watched a few times as the plugin contains many features in one unit and you really explain all of them very well, going to add to my DAW, thanks! ALDO
Cheers!
Your review is worth a million bucks it was so accurate an dynamic thanks MIKE
+Elijah Yalartai Thanks Elijah!
Thank you Michael, i'm with this device sinse 1995 and now i know much more with your knowlegd, that time it was the only hardware in the studio used on main vocal, i still have it on my rack and mixbus, it is much better than the other vca musterbus compressors. Waves plugin sounds so naturel so i will dublicate my hardware with the plugin.
I always wait for your demo before I make a decision. Thanks, Michael.
+44numskull Cheers!
That walkthrough was brilliant. Thanks so much. I think I'll be using this quite regularly from now on.
I really only like this unit on vocals (and bass occasionally) but the thing that really sells this unit is 100% the de-esser. I have *never* heard one that is both better than the 402 _and_ easier to use/ get a great sound from.
I will have to look again at the de-esser. Thanks for the feedback!
the bass really came out.nice compressor michael, thank you once again for the demos.
+Ray Bantawa Cheers Ray!
Fastest Attack is 50 micro seconds, not 5 micro seconds. It's worth noting that although this is a feed forward processor when it comes to the compressor and de-esser, the limiter is in feedback config", which I think is standard practice for limiters.
Thanks for all the great info Michael!
Excelent plugin, I just buy it in a subscription waves plan. Thanks.
Great review/tutorial. thanks man!
Thank you for the review.
+Garry Davlin Thanks Garry!
Is the BSS DPR 402 better than the DBX 160 Compressor or are does both units does the exact same?
They do basically the same, compress… but the BSS is much more versatile and the resulting compression will have different character in both units. I own both by waves, very good ones, good for different situations. Dbx 160 is an incredibly colored vca comp, the BSS is one of the most clean vca compressors in plugin mode, yeah even cleaner than the Elysia compressors by Plugin Alliance, and that’s much to say.
awesome videos explaining, do you recommend to use this vst on single instruments or bus channel? like drum bus, vocal bus, synth bus.. Thx
"11: Exapnder HF Cntrl" ??? :)
Hi there Michael I hope all is well yet another great review, just have a quick question personally do you find there is a unique sound to this particular plugin cheers.
+Santo Karlos Hi Santo,
I instantly recognized the tonal character after first loading up the plugin, but it is not a distinctive sound in the same way the SSL, Neve or API components are. It was more widely used in Europe than in the US where I worked and was more of a surgical compressor than one you would use to get a tonal character from.
Hope this answers your question.
Cheers!
Mike
+Michael White Thank you very much Michael, that answers what I needed to know, keep up the good work looking forward to the next upload :)
Cheers Santo!
What would be the biggest differences between this and an 1176 for example?
One is fet the other VCA.
This has much more smack than an 1176 like a more transparent dbx160.
I'd like to hear it without an already compressed snare drum track coming into it!!!
umm ah and um ahhhmm umm ahm and n ahhumm and aha uhh and ahhhhhhhhhh. that's all I heard and ahhh a ahhh.
+nettboy2001 If that's all you heard, then that says more about you than the video. Never met a troll who was successful at engineering, production in any meaningful way. Make better choices for yourself and the rest of the world around you.
"Nettboy2001" more likely you was born in 2001 from your username (Lol), You won't learn anything if you ignore what this guy says, Michael is a Legend in every right, Worked with Whitney Houston one of biggest artist, and he does fantastic courses on he's blog website. If your not willing to listen, then you will not go far with music or just life in general
You mean uuuhh?
nettboy2001 this video is very useful if you listen to the content. Sorry that the information went over your head.
Oh my did I hurt someone's feelings. It's just advice , don't take it. Keep doing what you do. I will not be listening. Who knows you might say something worth hearing.
+nettboy2001 No hurt feelings, always listen to constructive criticism and never delete critical posts.
"umm ah and um ahhhmm umm ahm and n ahhumm and aha uhh and ahhhhhhhhhh. that's all I heard and ahhh a ahhh." Is not constructive or helpful, just comes across as obnoxious.
All of these videos are unrehearsed single takes as transmitted in my live online class. They don't always flow as well as I would like, but the information is still valid and helpful to a lot of people as evidenced by every other comments in this post. If all you hear are Umms and Ahhs then there should be no reason to listen or comment in the first place.
I appreciate the support if that is the reason that you are commenting and appologize if I have taken it the wrong way. If you have listened to most of the other videos on this channel, you will find that they are largely free of the Umms and Ahhs that bother you.
Cheers!
Mike
