Do you live in Nashville? I think I recorded that singer about ten or eleven years ago.
I just listened to the recording. I don't se how it couldn't be the same guy. LOL Small world. Small town.

    Cool vídeo.
Drums (in fact, all track) too low.
Só, your voice comes and let's turn it down before a ear damage, then turn it up to try to feel what this plugin is changing ...
You could use the 160 to a talkover (sidechain your voice over the track)...
    :-)))

Very awesome video Mike, I enjoyed it. Any links to the finished song? I also dug that too.

Cool demo Mike. But I got to say that I've been expecting a bit more of this plugin. Can't find it's magic touch. Maybe if applied on stronger tracks? Cheers.

      Hi James,
To tell you the truth, the DBX 160 was never a "go-to" compressor for me mostly because I worked a lot in SSL rooms where each channel have a VCA compressor built in with attack and release settings. In studios without channel compression on the console, it was a way to get punch out of drums and bass. I would love to see a modelling of the DBX 165 which had attack and release settings. I used that one quite a lot. If you are looking for a vintage tonal coloration, I'm not sure you will find it here. It has a unique character to the attack and release which some people like and others don't.
      Thanks!
      Mike

I wish you had the chance to compare this to Stillwell Audio's Major Tom. I'm wondering how different they are.

I try to stay away from side by side comparisons but if I did I would have to do a shootout with UA, Softube, NI as well. I'm sure there are others.

Can please explain using side chain compression on the bass triggered by the kick drum. I guess it's actually a form of ducking. I can't figure it out.

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  5 лет назад

Yes, it is like ducking with the kick drum ducking the bass. When applied correctly, as in the vide, it should make the kick and bass move together without frequency interference.

Michael White, understood. I’m using it with Reaper and cannot figure out how to rout it. I’m sure it’s simple.

Mike - PLEASE!!!!! - do us listeners and watchers of your very well made videos one favor: watch out your "ahm..." s an "a..." s you are continuously saying. It seems to be soon childish and not well prepared and makes the really well made videos really riding on ones nerves. In one of your "Plug In Of The Week" videos I counted morde than 100 ah..m ´s. Sorry that I have to say that, but maybe you don't realize this on your own. I hope I did´t offend you but these "aaaahm.."s and "aaa.." `s are definately a paine in the arse. Although I really appreciate your work and knowledge! y.s. Walter

      +walter2145 Hey Walter.
I record all of these videos one take without rehearsal as part of a live online class I teach every Wednesday. This one is from over a year ago, I think I have made improvements in my delivery since. seems to bother some more than others, but I am aware.
      Thanks for the support!

@@mixingwithmike, thank you soooo much for the invaluable info and experience
that you bring to us. What I like most about your videos is the very fact that they
don't sound canned or overly slick - you are actually thinking as you speak, which
is something that I value in a college professor :) You're the best! Rock on!
