I'm very excited today! We get to try out the BRAND NEW (we got an advance copy!) Waves Abbey Road RS124 Compressor! I'm sure many of you know what this is... it's a very famous compressor!
First designed in 1960 by Abbey Road Head of Technical Bill Livey, Deputy Head Len Page and seasoned EMI Audio Designer Mike Batchelor, the EMI/Abbey Road RS124 compressor is one of the most coveted pieces of recording equipment ever developed.
Still in use today at Abbey Road Studios, and most recognized for its use at virtually every Beatles recording session, the RS124’s true inner-workings have remained an enigma to recording engineers. Through the years, from incomplete information and supposition, some have tried to recreate the RS124 compressor, though never fully realizing the elusive signal processor.
The story goes that in the 60s they wanted to get an "American Sound." At the time, American records seemingly had more low end, and there was something quite unique about them. From what I've read, George Martin had gone to some American Studios studios, and seen a lot of Altec equipment in there. So they bought a bunch of Altec 436 Compressors. They bring home a bunch of these home to EMI studios.
First they decided to change the power supplies so they could run on 22oV to 240V as opposed to 110V! And then of course they decided they wanted to upgrade it - make it a bit more hi-fi, and less noisy, so they changed the tubes and the valves! And before they knew it, they had modded the schnizzle out of it! I actually have an Altec 438 that has been modded to have some of the features that is in the EMI.
As many of you know, Abbey Road still makes the hardware version of the RS124 with Chandler! Which I used on a session that we'll be taking a look at in the RS124 Review Video below!
Introducing The Acclaimed Waves Abbey Road RS124 Compressor
The Waves Abbey Road RS124 is an authentic modeling of the ultra-rare EMI-designed RS124 compressor, heavily used in Abbey Road Studios during the ‘60s and ‘70s and heard on practically every Beatles recording.
Known for its silky-smooth, velvety tone, the RS124 has a fixed attack time that isn’t super-fast, allowing even more aggressive threshold settings to deliver pleasing results. It was among the most important pieces of analog gear shaping the sound at Abbey Road and has since become a “holy grail” compressor with almost mythical prestige. In particular, it is said to be responsible for some of the best bass sounds ever captured on tape.
As with everything vintage, each original RS124 was different. Valves can naturally stray away from being “in spec” and morph into a beautiful beast, giving each unit a different character. The RS124 was no exception.

We Wanted To Include Two Different Flavors Of The RS124:
Studio: This one models the original tubes found in RS124 serial 60070B - the favorite unit used at Abbey Road from the late 50s into the 60s. Though these valves varied from the original EMI specs, they turned out to have a “squashed” sound to them, which has since become part of the RS124’s familiar charm.
Cutting: This unit is a modification with a slower attack time. The slower RS124s found their way into the Abbey Road cutting rooms during the 60s.
The plugin also includes a “Super-Fuse” mode, which matches the attack to the release time and creates a uniquely aggressive compression tone where the compressor feels like its “fighting against itself.”

this guy is incredible. not only are the vids incredibly informative and spoken in a manner easy to digest but i'm so accustomed to english wanting to claim sole ownership of everything cool in modern music and automatically assuming everything british is superior to everything american this guy does none of that. he never shows any bias towards anybody or anything and is never ever anything but "fair and balanced" as they say in his assesments.

Then of course my Father played Classical and Jazz music with a healthy dose of Flamenco! The world has so much music to offer!!
@@Producelikeapro i'm a musician myself and though it certainly had not been all of them so often i find breitish / english want to argue about who started what, who did what first, who copied who, etc. and it seems so pointless to me because if there is any "special relationship" between u.s. and u.k. even more than politics i'd say it's modern music. bands from both countries constantly influenced each other and cross pollinated and stole each other's ideas and improved on them etc. etc. etc. and because the two countries are so different on so many levels and yet still there's the common language i think that just made the whole deal that much more fruitful. collectively we gave the world the greatest music in hsitroy and we did so together even if not on purpose.
that said yes there is tons of great music all over the world. as it happens i'm american (L.A.) but i come from a long line of flamenco guitarists and dancers (dad, uncles, aunts).
The UK used to be known as "the land without music" pre-20th Century, when European music was dominated by people with Germanic or Italian names. That all changed for us in the 60s but I think we still have a complex about it 😂

either way from the early 50's onward the U.S. and the U.K. gave the world the greatest music in human history and we did it TOGETHER so any rivalries (in my experience mostly on the part of the U.K.) are pointless and dumb.
You know, I was well and happy sticking with my 2 go-to's with the Puigchild and CLA-2A. After hearing this, however, I'm definitely going to be adding a third to that lineup. Sounds like another absolutely fantastic knockout from Waves' line of Abbey Road plugins

Honestly, Warren, it's easily feasible and a fun exercise to use nothing but the Abbey Road series of plugins. I've played at that but just used the Puigchild for compression. Will now try with this. It's a specific pleasure, almost a guilty pleasure, to indulge this way. Spurs a lot of day dreaming. Cheers, -G

I wish I had known about this a couple weeks ago. This is the sound I try to recreate with a LA2A into 1176 with ToneCentric in my vocal chain. There's a DeEsser and a couple EQs in between all that. But yeah. I want this. I really want this. Wow!

check out analog obsession's kolin, a free au/vst based on the 1950's Collins vari mu limiter, recently revamped by the developer. really great plugin, one of his best compressors.

I have the Chandler/EMI RS124 and it's amazing. Definitely going to buy this plugin version and use it in other spots in the mix. It will be interesting to A/B them. Each of them has something the other lacks. The plugin doesn't have the variable attack speed knob which is on the hardware and the hardware lacks the high pass filter. Two positive ways that a plugin differs from hardware are cost and more importantly, the option to employ automation. Personally, I do prefer the sound of hardware and go to it first and add plugins when the i/o runs out but I do love plugins as well and will always have plugin versions of my hardware if they are available. First, they make excellent laptop mix templates when I'm not in the studio and second, the GUIs make brilliant recall sheets (saved right there in the DAW channel strip) for my real hardware. Win, Win.
This is well worth $200, so you can bet I'll be grabbing it today for $40!

I bought it from what I heard on your video. I had several things in mind to try it on. In my opinion it sounds great. Very vintage and musical. You can really bring a dull track to life quickly without a lot of tweaking.

Funny story, yes. The British wanted an American sound. They send George Martin to check how they do it, he brings the Alters, and EMI actually builds a new compressor out of them, which went on to become a key element of the Beatles sound. Then everybody in the US tried to go for that fab British sound...
It’s the perfect combination! As Mike Bloomfield said ‘The British Took American Music and sold it back to the Americans’!

Just got the demo. One click of the super fuse and i feel this one might end up in the shopping cart. That super fuse button transformed both clean and overdriven guitar sounds in a really really nice way!

The demo video Waves posted on their channel made this plugin look really bad, but you actually used it properly and made it sound great!
Marvelous as usual. Mr. Huart is a truly master in his craft. But, as with probably any other plugin, we should not think this great smooth Beatles sound like is comming out of the plugin. It's comming from a perfect recording, totally focused on recreating the Beatles vibe with lots of bleed and ambiences. As well as the second pop sample, It's already there. Warren is just polishing the thing. But defnitely its a great compressor tool and for most of us who will never pilot a great console or vintage outboard gear, its nice to have those Abbey Road's vintage plugins and dream about Beatles and Pink Floyd while we try our stuff at home.
This has got big shoes to fill from the old Abbey Road RS 124 plugin that was never ported to 64-bit. That was a great plugin. Also stiffer competition these days: I'm looking forward to comparing it to Kush's AR-1.
God, that was a great plugin. I had it on my mix bus for every mix until it wouldn't work on my new computer and I couldn't get any success installing it. That wasn't a happy day, can tell you!

Well, I don't know. I'm on kind of a plugin moratorium. I think I already have about 15 different compressor plugins, of which I use maybe 4 or 5. But maybe, while it's still cheap.

I bought this plug-in and found that the default at least for me can't be improved on. I also noticed like you, unless it's on fast - I mean it doesn't really do anything (audible).
This points to a fundamental I long-ago identified and have been crucified by younger musicains for saying. Any musician is entitled to buy anything they like. But it's a bit like an average driver buying a Formula-1 car. Without training, you're not ready for the Grand Prix of Monaco. The same with plug-ins. You're a pro with countless hours producing bands in real studio with expectations that a pro product would result. That's important experience and different from a solo artist working in a bedroom studio. Not that there's anything wrong with bedroom studios - I better add if I'm smart, LOL.
I could have stared all day at the RS124 wondering why the default is best and why fast setting seems to be the only setting that works. I thought I was doing something wrong and rarely use the RS124 on anything but bass and it sounds like that's its primary use in your studio as well. This is where Waves and all these companies go wrong, imo. "Try it on anything" their marketing shouts. Far better to have made some phone calls to e.g. Abbey Road and asked, "er dudes, what was this used for on Beatles recordings?" Maybe the reply would be "only bass and occasionally guitars." That's real advice that is helpful saving countless hours for some guy that might try to get a delicate acoustic guitar sound out of it.
Not to open a second 'front,' LOL but I also find it a stretch to believe the 39 buck software has the same quirks as the hardware in professional hands.

I beat em the other two trash
It’s ‘good’ but every time it gets switched on the signal jumps at least two decibels which of course sounds louder, fatter and better..
I so wish we had gotten the multi tracks for this one
Just tried out the demo and IMMEDIATELY noticed a difference just with the plugin alone. No changes to it. Wow.
Did you match the level? With many plugins the output is louder engaged than when on bypass, by default. Thus, there's an instant loudness-charm.

@@Producelikeapro Sure. I enjoy your actual "good" reviews.. I learned engineering from an old Liverpool guy you may know, Chris Huston. He worked on Led Zeppelin 2 etc.. Has been a designer of studios for decades. Sort of retired now in Louisiana, but was up here in OR, then Nashville for a while. Met him in LA in the 80's.

15:40 the "slow" (even thou it's on fast) release gives a really dynamic sound and adds a rich color with a lot of presence

Tried it on the Master Bus against SSL G series. Set to Cutter, amazingly musical smoothing, where the SSL let a few transients through, the 124 just handled them beautifully
this sounds great on the bass. out of curiosity, can you do a video on the different types of compressors and talk about which instruments they are strongest or best known for? thanks for the great vids Warren!
This is super exciting! I was always under the impression that this modded altecs were too coloured and intense for vocals hence the fairchilds, but damn it sounded cool on vox and on bass and guitars is amazing! Need to hear it on drums for that psychedelic smashed drum sound with the almost reverse envelope cymbals.

ur the only person that talks scene 100% OF THE TIME NOT SAYING OTHER DONT SAY GOOD STUFF but what u say is right , i never looked at this sort of stuff years ago , but like u i have been there and done it , so many talk total bloccks about music tec , i feel so many kids hear stuff and get wrong info but u always say it has it is , am glad u have time to do this i don't , keep up the great work u do here . one day ill do a thang for u , well done , as someone thats worked at abby good one .yeah ive worked with ur faz bands i have stories. Great work u little bro u cheer me up what u put out to the world , good for u . PS when are we going 2 have plug ins that do the work dont have noise and dont use so much cpu , what do u think of the nerve plugins , hes got only 2 and from cubase , u do know all the rest are copies and there the only ones hes made , like all the ssl plugings and i could go on , anyways have a look if u not seen them ur looking at 350 ish for both of them , its a lot of cash for bedrooom studio but like ur input .they came out years ago . and no one s ever talks about them ! and whats waves up to , they have had a bug that saps cpu and plugins hang the cpu when there turned off and there last update sucks graphics now , waves are great but there bugs fuck up recordings , to many times for me i just turn them off when i have a good gig , leave then until am mixing alone coz its not good saying sorry i cant see my mouse , well ur get that joke if u have used them ,

Hey warren great video as always. I'd like to make a request for a video on recording electric guitar! I recently bought a ibenez rg (hope I spelt that right) and a Scarlett 2i2 and using a plugin called amplification 360 (I think?) Now I'm not a good player and produce psytrance so I'm struggling to get clean "metal" guitar tones and I know 90% of it is my playing but the biggest problem is shutting the bloody thing up when I'm not playing or the over tones just ring out. I've tried using silencers and its all voodoo to me :-/ I've also tried presets which arnt really working for my genre. I was guessing some were designed for drop D tuning so I tried that and it caused all sorts of phase problems with my basslines. A video on how to get great disortion tones from amps would be awesome and will help. I don't have pedals plus the parts I want to play live is simply bar chord heavy metal stuff. I'm just struggling to get clean tones instead of a wall if noise :-/ and I don't really know how to use silencers which is what I most probs need to know
@3:26: It looks like you've boosted the kick on the TG12345 by the full 10dB on both the Treble and the Bass (plus a little bit on the Presence) -- is that correct? If so, a future video could discuss this (and if it's in a prior video, a link would be great). As always (and to echo everyone else here), great work.
Sounds pretty good on vocals and the bass! Just bought it. I like it. In some cases Kush's AR-1 works better. But I love to have options!
Great video, Warren. I’m hoping you can weigh in on this. I’ve been reading a lot about aliasing and oversampling and noticed waves stuff doesn’t have any hd or over sampling options. Plugin doctor shows so pretty aggressive aliasing but it’s usually at a quietish level. Seems like it’d add up over a mix though. Am I over thinking this? Does any of that actually matter? I’m also working at 96k.
Speaking of Beatles, I wootnynder if you ever heard of David Novotny, a Czech musician who recorded a CD of original songs trying to sound as close as the Beatles from different eras.

I dunno but there was a guy called Karl Novotny who played the drums in the Austrian band Kyrie Eleison. I wonder if they're related. xD

Sounds good, but there are a few things that are a little different. It's not got quite the same production value, except the vocals sound really good.
@@Fwuzeem The vocals were done with a Neumann mic I forgot. He got it without the connector and power supply.Guy's dad fixed the connector and built a power supply out of an old radio.

A few things to mention........as a tube comp, is it considered more of an optical or vari-mu type ??.
Also, on the Little Empire track the voc sounds great, but the essy'ness popped out more than what you started with. Guessing this is due to the slower attack time?

I always wanted a compressor, so I bought the whole PA rack from a church, because it had a compressor. (In a barn sale) The comp turned out to be an Altec 436A, So the art deco rack,a tube Webster mixer (made nearby my home town,) and a giant tube power amp all came for $100. I had to have a compressor. I knew nothing about it. Sometimes a blind pig finds an acorn.

Against some pupular opinions today, I really like the Waves stuff, even more I love quite some. What annoys me though is the Waves update plan. The V12 has one interesting update, resizable windows that is.
If you plan to install V11 and V12 together it can be a real pain. Now there are already people not buying any new Waves plugin, just because of the WUP.
I would very much prefer an update subscriprion for $10 a month or something similar.
Other than that a fine new plugin.
Ahhh, the Alesis 3630. I had one of those back in the day. More like a filter to filter bass out LOL. Got rid of it many years ago.
The Alesis was awful. I used to cringe when I saw it in studios!
Try it on drums in the super fuse mode but with the mix only blended in slightly. On the old RS124 plug-in by Abbey Road that they never made into 64-bit, it used work well as a parallel drum compressor in that way, but this waves one has a mix control anyway
Hello Warren I’ve just bought a few of the Abbey Road plugins in the sale and am intending to mix some songs I’ve been working on trying to use these plugins as an analog signal chain. I was just wondering why you have the J37 first in the chain. Wouldn’t the recordings have gone through the console before they went to tape? And then would they have mixed back off the the tape through the console again? Basically I’m trying to work out what the chain would be. Would it be- RS12345 - Fairchild/Altec - J37?
P.S I bought that Abbey Road course it’s very enjoyable and informative!
