What I like most about these reviews is learning what YOU are hearing and listening for. That is something you can't get from any plugin. Produce Like a Pro is helping me learn to listen like a pro. Interesting plugin. I love the REDD section, it has a low-mid warmth.
Just picking this plugin up in 2022... I'm late to the party, but I have to say that so far it does wonders on a drum parallel buss with fantastic result. Definitely worth every penny.
Got it last night as it's on sale. My reaction was exactly the same. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It's like my synth had the common cold and this plugin just opening it right up with full clarity. Unbelievable.
for the first time in my life i finally see the similarities between mixing a track and editing a photo, photographer usually take photos in RAW format cause it preserves alot of detail it looks bad in default but when u edit it u can get the texture color and detail out alot without ruining the photo, and with this plugin, it brought out alot of hiddent detail and texture to the guitar and to the vocals, this is literally and figuratively a Hidden Gem
I saw this plugin in a friend's studio and played a bit with it just like you. 2 minutes in and I new I had to have it! Loved your reaction when you popped it on the drums buss and unbypassed 😂 I currently use it on my drums and bass busses in live concerts and it buffs up my rythem section. My favourite saturator so far, I don't really see how it could be replaced as it's really is so versatile. Thanks for the demo, I love how you let your audience listen in with you as you go
After many years in production all I realize is that the Waves floating Multiband compressor is my fav tool of all time. Then the abbey roads gear and now this. We are living in great times indeed!
I just got the ADT and the J37 and a couple others last night. I put the ADT on my vocal and the sax solo and they came alive in the coolest ways. Then I put the J37 on my output, after my limiter and this beautiful transparent glue happened and I can hear every element in the mix with such a clear energy it was and is breathtaking. I came down this morning thinking I may have been tired and over enthusiastic but NO. It sounded SO good . My song jumped out of the speakers. Now I want them all. This saturator is magic as well. You just proved that. Thank you Warren.
The plugin has just been released and there is a demo of yours already. I freaking love it. I also loved the berzerk demo as well. Such an amazing plug-in. I already have it in my arsenal. Lots of love from Spain
One of the most interesting sounding saturation plugins I've heard recently... I'm actually considering buying it (struggling with some orchestral percussions VS pop song mix ). I've watched many RUclips videos about it and your review has been the most useful by far! Once again Warren, you've nailed it! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate all your efforts to help us, "mere mortals", get the best out of all the ressources out there... Have another wonderful day!
I bought it after watching your video: it's the best invest I made so far! I used it on my "record vocal" set and it has gotten immediately better (I fell in love with my voice! haha) HUGE Thanks Warren !
I just bought this plug in (and usually I use stock plugins in Logic Pro) and honestly I'm really blown away. I had a vocal I needed to make more intelligible and literally just inserting this plug in gave me the high mid boost I needed to cut through the mix... all the while sounding natural and wonderful
Seems like I'm a simple person as well. I love the look, the sound and the magic of the Abbey Road stuff, When ever Wave issues a new Abbey Road plugin I cycle around the "Add to Cart" button for two days, keep it in the cart for about two additional days then and before I finally hit the "Proceed to Checkout" button. This time I was clever. I bought it straight away 'cause I knew I'd do it anyway ;-)
Your reactions to how good it sounds are the best!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Warren. I sure am thankful for everything you've taught me through your videos over the years!
I was kinda skeptic before, but this is really bananas. It does more than just saturation though. I don't know exactly what it does, but I also don't care because It sounds absolutely amazing. Wow!
Gotta say, I bought the plugin back in Dec, after watching this vide release. Came back today, because, despite gunning through the handbook, it only all made sense after watching you play with the controls and hearing the possibilties
man my mind was blown at 21:20 ish when you opened up the mid side and Put only the sides in and all that crunchy goodness fell into place, but the middle was untouched, that will have tremendous effect on the Mix Buss if your mix isn't quite lively enough but ya don't wanna totally demolish your blends and such,
Amazing! have a great monday you guys today i didt not have the time to start my Protools first...but in a minute i grab my guitar and play lol😀 ...Warren Intresting sound Nice vocals Nice track when those kicks hits verry exciting ...
This is really nice, totally shines compared to other saturation VSTs that I have. Playing with the demo right now but I can't see myself passing it up, it seems extremely versatile and usable. Great review, I really enjoy your infectious enthusiasm.
Great demo! Thanks Warren, I tested on vocals and drums, it's awesome, I cannot wait to do a complete mix with it (Sorry Decapitator ;-) -. I added it into my PT template. Hats off Waves and Abbey Road guys!
@@colonelwatts Have you tried Studio 3 with the head tracking engaged? With it the spacial effects make sense and fool your ears, without it they just muddy the mix. At least to me. I don't have a great room and it' was definitely worth the $99 for me. But it's not going to be valuable to everybody.
thank god im seeing people appreciate waves, saw a video of a mix engineer talking about how he uses lo air on almost all of his drums, everybody was dissing waves saying that they are sponsoring him to say that, even if warren is getting paid to review this plugin, we all can see ourselves waves are one of the best plugin manufacturers if not the best, and dont tell me UAD their stuff is stupid expensive
Distorted hard-panned guitar buss, push the "bite" band into the Saturator and apply as needed to the sides only, leaves the less exciting center as is so it doesnsn't fight the important stuff that lives there. Absoulutely bloody excellent plugin!
I jumped on Berzerk, this, and the MDMX plug-ins the minute they came out. Crazy good distortion. The Saturator is going in the mix bus for my next Rock album, compander and all :)
The acoustic was a bit overcooked for the mix, but it's really very nice. Preferred the Redd for it over the TG. I have this since yesterday, along with MDMX and a free Abbey Road Chambers ;) my favourites by a mile from Waves are the Abbey Road stuff and Kramer's Tapes Tubes n' Transistors. Good one Warren!
Yes, that is interesting! I wonder why that is? This was one of the first they let anyone try! So maybe it's been modded or they reviewed there's earlier?
Off topic but I see that you have a pair of the small JBL's up there. They've caught my eye on sweetwater, the design is impressive. I am certainly interested in hearing and learning more about them. I need a small pair of monitors.
Hey Warren, I just stumbled upon this video and it is an oldie but goodie!! I've just bought the AR Saturator based upon this video. You showcased all the different applications of this plugin so well that I knew I NEEDED it! The drum section where you demoed the plugin got me thinking of some Kate Bush album three onward vibes (I think she recorded at studio 1?). Thank you so much. Hope you are doing marvellously well and that you have a good day ;-)
Love it on the drums! Side note - how did you get the drums to sound like that before the saturator? Was that the small kit in your tracking room or another one somewhere else? BTW - our mutual friend Terry Lesperance says hi :)
Sounds great, haven't got this one (yet...) but lately my go to plugins are, well, Waves (love the J37). Tangent here but I saw D. Zappa in Utrecht the other night and the FOH engineer (Eran Ben Zur) runs ALL on Waves, and it was one of the best sounding shows I've been to in a long time. The band was also just killing it, just saying :)
Newbie says, "mostly I hear a mid-scoop when you turn it on", but it does sound better. And, it sounds much better when you bring everything else back in than when it's soloed. Okay, that was only a 1st impression before you really started messing with it. Really cool sounds! Amazing ideas! Also, the title and location reminded me of a question I thought I might ask you for an FAQ Friday video. I looked up the Beatles's "Revolver" on Amazon (or Spotify? Not sure...) and the only version that came up was the 2009 Remastered versions, and this was across all of their releases. I thought I was hearing some crazy compression and had long been curious about their recordings, which is a HUGE rabbit hole I kinda don't want to fall into. Have you ever A/B'd these against older releases, or even vinyl? Is it that noticeably different than how I remember it or has it been processed quite a bit? I tried a search for critical reviews, but no luck. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
I remember when the Redd come out, everyone was lowering the gain to -18 or so, to avoid it being too harsh.Do you need to do that with this? This sounds real good.
What was it that the guitars were sent through for The Beatles' Revolution? As I understand it, no amp was used. The guitars were run direct and distorted through the board or outboard gear. When I heard the distortion that this added to the vocals, that guitar sound was the first thing that I thought of.
I would be interested in knowing what the TG and REDD 'programmed in' settings are, and if they too are adjustable. I could always hook up my TG and REDD but some entirely different Voodoo is happening here. My jaw dropped on the acoustic guitar.
Thanks for this, Warren. I am surprised that there is not a greater difference in sound between the TG and the REDD in the plug in. I am a Beatles' freak, and even though 'Abbey Road' sounds fantastic as an album, it took me years to work out/find out that the hard acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and drums that I loved from 'The White Album' had a huge amount to do with whichever version of the REDD desk they were using at time, and I would have LOVED it if The White Album had been recorded through the REDD desk. Imagine hearing 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' through the REDD! John and George apparently wanted the REDD for the guitars on that song, too. And imagine if Apple had actually signed Queen - then we would have heard them through that TG.
Hang on. I thought that this was based on the TG 12345, which was the desk that the 'Abbey Road' album was recorded through. But the link you have below reveals that this is "...the ultra-rare EMI TG12321-a secret weapon of Abbey Road engineers". I thought something was not sounding quite right, in terms of similarity to the album.

Great plugin. Sounds really good. Would it be possible for you to do a video about mixing acoustic or clean guitars when they're playing melodies or arpeggios instead of chords? I've seen a lot of tutorials about how to mix rhythm guitars but not much on lead and almost none on clean or acoustic lead. At 6:18, that acoustic sounds really great, If you could talk about that would be really helpful. Than you
I REDD the news today, oh boy ;) Prefer the TC myself in the default state and that touch of magic it adds to the acoustic guitar reminds me of playing an electroacoustic with a fresh 9V in the preamp and brand new strings.
Wow this sounds great. Wonder how this would translate to electronic music... I'm sure I can use it to add life to some sparkly synth plucks or to the drum bus!
You must be talking about Slate plugins. They have a 'sound' when you start layering them one many tracks. There's a huge reason why so many professionals use Waves and UAD vs Slate plugins. Slate being efficient on cpu is good however it does sacrifice a lot.
If you could get a plugin to reproduce the sound of any album, which one would it be?
J37 , any MF DOOM album
Sly & The Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On (Ho ho)
Magical Mystery Tour, because 1967 was the pinnacle of recorded sound and musical creativity in rock.
Hand Cannot Erase - Steven Wilson
Mezzanine - Massive Attack
No plugin's ever...been able...to stop me in my tracks before. It's a beast.

Prefer the TC myself in the default state and that touch of magic it adds to the acoustic guitar reminds me of playing an electroacoustic with a fresh 9V in the preamp and brand new strings.
Wow this sounds great. Wonder how this would translate to electronic music... I'm sure I can use it to add life to some sparkly synth plucks or to the drum bus!
Can I use this plugin for edm for example tech house basslines?
Absolutely!!
Does the saturator oversample internaly or does it create nasty undertones from treble signal, like many (all?) other waves-plugins?
You must be talking about Slate plugins. They have a 'sound' when you start layering them one many tracks. There's a huge reason why so many professionals use Waves and UAD vs Slate plugins. Slate being efficient on cpu is good however it does sacrifice a lot.
Why don't you have the Off option on the Saturator part? Is this a Beta version?
Hi Pablo, yes, this was a beta version! Good spot!
If someone owns the Waves REDD and/or TG12345 plugins, what if anything do those still add if the Saturator is used?
You’re the shnizzle Warren THANKS!
You're very welcome my friend!!
really nice
Sounds like the kind of saturation Owen Morris used on Gallagher’s voice on definitely maybe
Splendid
That's a great reference Stu!
