    I'm 19 and I always wondered why my high-waisted shorts never really looked good on me. And why I felt that I looked better in mid-rise jeans. People said high-waisted jeans look flattering on everybody and even though I'm naturally slim, I thought I was just out of shape or something.

    • @JulesBeth
      @JulesBeth  3 года назад +18

      THIS! This is the kind of "advice" that misses nuance and can lead to frustration. I talked about it in a recent video on what to avoid for short torso bodies ruclips.net/video/XzqdJG-bYq4/видео.html

      Great you have found what works for you! :) Interesting because I’m the opposite. So I wonder if it depends a lot on your ribcage. I have a short torso and refuse to wear anything but the highest of high rise jeans (we’re talking 11-13" rise 70’s vintage). The narrowest part of my waist is above my belly button and unless jeans cinch this, it fails to flatter to my figure. Because my ribcage is very narrow it just looks like a continuation of my waist so I can get away with very high jeans as long as I am wearing a skin tight top :)

    This is really interesting to me. I think you're right in that it's about proportions, but I think it also depends on how you see those proportions. I think the crop you don't like looks much better than the one you do precisely because it's a more uneven cut. If you were a visual layout, the reason would be obvious. You always want 1:3 or 1:4 more than 2:3. There's a reason most fashion drawings elongate the legs to inhuman proportions. But I also get the effect your choice creates and why it looks better to you.
    That's what I think is important but difficult. Understanding design well enough to apply I to yourself in ways that you prefer. Thank you for sharing information that helps make it possible

    Im in love with your videos. Honestly, I've been strugling with my body type for so long, because nobody near to me have similar proportions. I use to think Im a alien, always feeling weird about my appearance. But your videos (you are so beautiful) and all the comments from people with the same questions, are giving me hope. Maybe someday I'll look to my body with so much more respect and careness than I do now. Thank you for all.

    I am very similar to you in body shape and I agree with everything you say in your videos. Great advice and you've helped me realize why certain cuts just do not work well for me. Wanted to mention, I actually have and enjoy wearing the Faherty/Jamesport textured romper with loose waist. If you can find one, you might feel comfortable wearing it. I see some listed on Poshmark. It's wonderful to wear in the excessively hot weather we've been having. I see another similar style online, Tuckernuck/Myla textured romper with a V-neck rather than round. Just wanted to mention, since I love my Faherty/Jamesport!😄

    Anyone have any idea how to help mee? I have a fairly flat stomach but my ribcage is really short and wide. I have tiny non-existent hips and my legs are super long but super skinny with no shape at all - like straight down. I just feel like i look super disproportionate. Cant wear high rise shorts bevause it makes my torso look even shorter - gotta wear super short shorts though because anything longer that flares at all just sit out way too much and make my legs look even skinnier in comparison with my wide ribcage. But short shorts also make my legs even longer and my ribcage even shorter. I know lowrise are great for short torso but i cant find anything low rise and whatever says it is still sits at about my belly button. Also having trouble finding cute long summery tops. HELP!!! Idk what to wear!

    I am so glad I found your videos! I have been so insecure about my short torso for so long and there are barely any videos on this. This really helps me know what to look for and what to avoid when I shop for something, rather than constantly go through trial and error. So thank you so much for this! Regards the camisole tip, as a camisole lover, I found out a way I can actually wear them and that is to get them in a color that is similar to the skin color and avoid contrasting colors. I think contrasting colors on the upper body (mainly with short sleeves) look like they cut out the torso a bit. For example, I am very pale so light beige, pink and white work best for me so, I usually try to avoid camisoles in black (which sucks cuz I love black and dark colors). This way they contrast less with the skin and they emphasize and make the upper body appear bigger which balances out a bit the legs. I'm not sure if this will help anyone but just thought of leaving it here in case it does. :)

    This is such a usefull channel. I’m 64. I’m tall and have … yes long legs and a very short torso. Everyone makes videos about how to elongate your legs ! Come again ? How about shortening you legs. Also I have no waist and my legs are very slim. Which makes them look even longer. I wore drop crouch pants for several years (Rundholz style) but since I recently found out I’m actually a coastal grandmother (although far away from the sea and even further from grandchildren 😅) I stepped away from this style. Now what has been a major eye opener for me was an article I read ages ago that told me why I always had a tummy. Even when I was pencil thin when I was young, I always had a tummy. In the article they said it is because of my long legs ! There is less space available for our intestines than with women who have a long body and short legs ! Waw, bye bye frustrations. It does make sence doesn’t it ? And look around you, long legged women usually have tummies, short legged sisters are flat !

    Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your insecurities. You're absolutely beautiful, though. Just sayin'. I love all of these positive comments you got. I have a short torso and really long legs. I also have the luxury of a naturally wider waist and narrow hips. YAY! I've been camouflaging my short waist for decades. I think acceptance is key. And, you're right, I can't find any pants these days without a high waist. Cannot WAIT for this fad to go away! Take care 🙂

  • @kspin996
    @kspin996 3 месяца назад

    This is really helpful. I understand now why some tank tops I love and others are awful, it's all in the neckline and shoulder straps. I can see how it turns your torso into a rectangular shape, which gets rid of any waist you have. More women, including me, need to stop being hard on their bodies and realize it's just the clothes!
    Also I'm done with trends. It's no wonder I can't find clothes, when everything is boxy and I like to have a shape.

      Do you believe there is “flattering” as a static thing? It seems to me that body/aesthetic preferences change so much I can’t see how we can actually use the word flattering. It can also inadvertently hurt someone who thinks they can’t live up to that standard. It’s a moving target. I worry about young people judging themselves against the hard to define concept.
      I realize that I am proportioned like you and I have always loved the look of tunics (long enough to cover my “good parts,” which I use as a fond designation). I wear leggings and legwarmers to show off my legs which I am fond of. You couldn’t pay me to wear cropped pants with any width. I would wear capris/pedal pushers/cigarette pants. I have never liked gauchos or long cropped wide pants. And high waisted trousers, paper bag or not, just plain don’t fit because there’s nowhere for them to settle. Never mind that my stomach hurts when I have elastic or a binding waistband around my middle. Fortunately, I was a belly dancer for 20 years and learned to wear my skirts under my belly at the top of my hips. They sit there nicely and they don’t fall down and they don’t hurt my belly.
      I am 64 years old and I have been wearing that silhouette since the 80s when the movie Flashdance came out. I don’t like the raggedy look but I like the silhouette. I’m also a big fan of shoulder pads.
      I live in life as an artist and once I hit 40 I didn’t care what people thought. So I’m learning about however people see things, but I’m really debating whether the concept of flattering even works. It’s more like self satisfying or self reflective, if you ask me. Maybe if you’re trying to attract a mate who thinks vogue magazine knows what body‘s should look like…? I am not trying to pick a fight, I am actually curious. Because I see what you like to wear with your proportions top to bottom and I don’t really want to wear those on my own body. I do like a peplum or a tunic, but I like my peplums long. I’m not really that fond of the waist length or slightly longer than waist length top. I do prefer my tunics to be straight on the sides rather than having a band at the bottom to pull in (like a pumpkin).
