About 5 years ago the standard STP, Ac Delco, and Fram oil filters were made of a much sturdier construction. When the sheet metal end caps came about, all the manufacturers "reset" the oil filter market and started selling the consumers an inferior product for the same price. Similar to getting a "48-ounce" ketchup bottle for what used to be a "64-ounce" bottle price. To get the same quality as before, you were forced to upgrade to a "gold" or "maximum life" type oil filter. I still use conventional motor oil but now use an upgraded filter even though the naysayers will claim they are only for use with synthetic oil. The next scam is now upon us as they are beginning to introduce "once-a-year" oil and re-labeling the conventional oils as "economy".

I've been switching all my cars to the STP Extended Life for it's good quality for less than $10. What actually matters to me the most is that its lifespan is longer than my oil change interval of 7500 miles. That's with synthetic. It gives me peace of mind that my filter is still filtering at the end of my interval.

big cliff I use STP extended life cost me 9 bucks at Auto Zone. I use Castrol GTX synthetic blend high mileage since my car has 124,000 miles in it. I have a computer on my 2007 Honda Civic ex that measures the oil so I put new oil then it starts going down after a I set it to 100% on computer. When I gets down to 15% I change the oil of course is black and dirty, but it doesn’t look slushy. It looks clean even though it’s dark black.. that’s what I noticed from STP extended life oil filter. I love it. If you want to go with royal purple and spend 7 extra bucks.. go for it, but personally it’s the same protection for me.

What you have to remember about any street car is the filters have a bypass or sometimes its in the engine as in a small block Chevy. and the settings are low. So when your engine is cold or you rev it up or there is some contaminates in the filter the oil is not being filtered its bypassing. Also the 99% filters are more restrictive causing more oil to go around the filter especially after a few miles. The bypass is a feature that makes it so if you dont change your oil you will still lubricate the engine. Dirty oil is bad but better that no oil. There is a trick on small block chevys to plug the bypass in the adapter so you get 100% filtered oil . Also on other engines you can find a filter cross reference that does not have an internal bypass. JUST YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE FILTER ON TIME OR YOU WILL HAVE NO OIL FLOW. If you do change the filter regularly it should really improve the life span of your engine. On race engines plugging the bypass can really save you money like lets say a cam goes flat with a bypass the whole engine see's metal filings and is destroyed with no bypass you just need to clean it out and change the cam.

I use conventional oil and change it every 3,000 miles. I use STP XL. The older red antil drain back seals seemed to work very well. When i remove the filter it holds the oil inside until I loosen it. Since they have changed to the black seal, I have had two of them not hold any oil back !! It seems the drainback seal isn't working. Something has changed with the manufacturing process. After having two "dry" filters, I am switching back to factory Toyota filters.

Hi CarsNToys, I wanted to let you know that the STP Extended Life S6607XL featured in your video no longer has the orange gasket or the wrapper on the bottom of the can. It now has a standard black rubber gasket like the standard blue STP filter. This has not happened to the entire product line, but seems to be mainly just the popular S6607XL. The anti drain back valve inside seems that of the Maximum life filter now. I thought that was worth mentioning. Perhaps you can buy a new one and see if the inside has changed too? Hate to pay the same old price for a now lesser filter! Thanks!

For example, if you change your oil every 5k miles, you can use the extended life filter for 2 oil changes and the max life filter for up to 3 oil changes.
while taking off the oil filter every oil change and draining the old oil inside of course.

These filters are now made by Premium Guard... Which they manufacture very good filters. The STP blue Premium Guard is 96.5% at 20 microns. The XL Premium Guard is now 98% at 20 microns. These filters have a silicone anti drain back valve and silicone gasket.

    • @bradleyhudgins1005
      @bradleyhudgins1005 5 лет назад +2

      @@faxmen09
You are totally correct about Purolator making the Max filter.. in fact in my area Purolator made the XL filters for awhile has well... The construction and date code were Purolator made. Funny thing the Maximum life filter was not the heavy type of construction has the Boss.
Has far has Daewoo making those STP filters.... I thought the same thing... I will check on this but it may well have been Premium Guard making them for Daewoo.... I will check up on that...
Having said that... PG main focus is making "house" filters for companies... Like Federated Auto, AZ, Auto Value etc etc... in fact a friend of mine uses the Auto extra filters at his shop... And they are Premium Guard made.
Take some time to look up the PG stuff. I'm sure you can... I have no doubt you are very smart and can do that. I do mean that by the way... And yes it is the ISO standard that is there... . It is from the manufacturer themselves... Aka Premium Guard... They are the ones making the STP blue and XL filters for AZ..... The ones with the clear plastic cover on the bottom of them..... Look up Premium Guard.... Those specs are theirs...
The XL is the exact same one at Federated Auto... The blue is the same has well... Both are at Federated Auto stores... And.... The ISO code is on the PG site... It is all there..... Look it up.
Just like STP oil... It's made by either Warren Distribution or Amalie... How is that known?? By the Dexos approval numbers.. Those numbers correlate to either of those blenders... And Amalie helps because underneath their containers it is stamped with AOC. Amalie Oil company.
Same thing with their batteries.... Made by Johnson Control... And AAP are made by JC has well...
Fun fact... Easy Penn now makes the Valuepower battery at some Walmarts... And the group 24f Valuepower that is $49.88 is in fact the same exact battery that has a 2 yr free replacement warranty through O Reilly's... The part number off Walmart site is 624fmf... Which actually weighs 41 pounds... My Valuepower battery from Walmart weighed 41 pounds when I put it on the scale.. the next level down battery from East Penn the 524fmf battery weighs only 37 pounds.... So it is obvious to anyone that the Valuepower battery made by East Penn is in fact the higher level battery.
Same true with these STP oil filters... The date codes, construction of them, the packaging of them, and the fact that these filters are made for other parts stores... With the exact same date code, exact same packaging, exact same construction... It is a PG oil filter. With the exact same media in them. With the exact same ISO code performance. PG makes filters for the parts stores... Just like East Penn does... In my area the O Reilly's have East Penn batteries... Exact same weight, construction, and specs.. Napa batteries has well are East Penn made in my region. Walmart now has well have East Penn batteries in my area. Batteries Plus also sells East Penn batteries in my area. Again.... Same specs, same weight, same battery case design for all their batteries manufactured... Whether they be manufactured for Walmart, O Reilly's, Batteries Plus, and or Napa.. Just a different sticker slapped on them. Same true with these Premium Guard filters.... Same filter whether it has a STP, Federated Auto filter, Parts Plus or Auto Extra sticker on it... No difference between any of them. Just a different sticker put on them.

Tell ya what... I am going to contact Premium Guard... And see what they say about the exact same filter.... And see if it is indeed the same as the Federated Auto filter... I will let you know what I find out tomorrow.... I may well be wrong :)
But I kinda don't think so... But hey... Never know until one asks..
And I didn't mean to give ya a hard time... It just seems quite reasonable that it's the exact same given the same design... Same paint, same ADBV etc.. but again.... It may well be something else...

Hello. I have watched Several videos on Oil Filters. Most cover the same parts of the Filter. Bypass Valves, Anti Drain back, etc. What I am interested in is, Micron Rating. Nobody ever seems to test that. Metal endcaps, 60+ Pleats. Its really useless if it allows dirt to pass through. My own personal vehicles I use Bosch filters. Distance Plus on my 16 Tucson. And the Premium on my 18 Harley 1200. If I couldn't get one, My next filter choice would be a Purolator Boss. Don't know how that would work on my Harley?

Typically, the size of the can will remain the same. What's different is the number of pleats inside the filter and/or the media used inside the filter. For example, synthetic media can retain a higher percentage of dirt vs cellulose / polyester filters.

I just purchased an STP Maximum Life filter for my daughter's 2018 Chevy Cruze yesterday.... I noticed that the stamp at the top of the filter now reads " Made in China" .... first time seeing this on the Max Life filters as they were previously made in the USA.. I also noticed that the gasket is no longer black in color and is now the same color as the one on their Extended Life filters... Im now left wondering if the material on the MAX Life gasket is still Ethylene Acrylic or if it has changed to Silicon like the Extended Life filters?

I've been reading comments regarding the filters made in China. I'll have to take a look to see what kind of gasket they're using but I can tell you Purolator Boss uses Ethylene Acrylic - ruclips.net/video/ARFGm7BftJM/видео.html

It depends on the filter part number as to where they are made not the filter grade as for stp filters.

The majority of filters I've opened have metal end caps. A few come to mind with fiber board end caps - Fram ExtraGuard, ACDelco (not their Gold series) and Subaru OEM filters.

Passing on this independent Oil Filter Test showing that the old paper filters do a better job of filtering. An easy way to test filters is to see how many miles after an oil/filter change you start to see Black Carbon in the oil by putting a drop of oil from the oil stick onto a piece of white paper. If you see Black then the filter is done filtering and oil is going through the By-Pass Valve. Change the oil and buy the 10,000 or 20,000 mile filter then see how far you get before seeing that ugly Black Carbon. The video from FronNine: ruclips.net/video/4rgi9B8BKUE/видео.html

Conventional oil is good way past 5k miles. My dodge avenger can go up to 8k on conventional, based on the oil life monitor. Either use dino oil and change when the oil life monitor says so, 5-9k miles duty based. Or run synthetic and ignore the oil life monitor and change at 8k. That's basically what it says.
