I sat with him for several hours on several days before he passed but knowing that he was transitioning made me so fearful that I would be "interfering" in some way with the process if I were to be too intimate, so I only sat by and watched as he made disturbing sounds which sometimes sounded painful. My greatest regret: Dad was fond of sweets, but he was borderline diabetic, so I kept bringing him artificially sweetened cookies and candy which he did not like. I was trying to keep him alive to the age of 100 that he always said was his goal, but (for crying out loud!) he was already 93 and fading fast. Why didn't I bring him the sugar sweetened treats he desired? I'll never forgive myself for that.
Aww, you'll always find something to feel guilty about. We in this age are not conditioned to deal with death. You were there and didn't abandon him - that's the most important thing.
