James father was a Lt Colonel In the British Army. James was a Captain. Colonel Blount (James changed his name to 'Blunt' as a stage name) had stage 4 kidney cancer. No one in the family was a donor match, and he was given a short period of time to live. James wrote this song and filmed this in one take. After seeing this video, a distant cousin of Col. Blount, contacted the family and was a match. Col. Blount is currently alive and doing well! The money James made from this video is donated to British Military Veterans. The line, "I'm not your son. You're not my father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye.", is a paraphrase of what Col. Blount told James when he was first deployed into a combat zone - letting him know that, while his dad loved him, as his superior officer, he couldn't be seen favoring his son over other soldiers.
Because of the song and the story a record amount of people signed up to the donor register and many were matched with dying patients. So not only for his father but for many, many others he chased the monsters away. The story keeps inspiring people to go on the register. You should wat a young hawian man called Iam Tongi sing this for his audition for Americas Got Talent where he sings this for his own father. Its truly so touching joe rogan was asked to react to it on his podcast by a guest and joe broke down into tears on the podcast. Definitely give it a watch.
Iam Tongi from American Idol performed this song as his audition song and he had just lost his father prior to going on the show. He later performed it with James Blunt and went on to win the whole show. The night they sang this song together made the entire audience and all three judges bawl their eyes out. You should look that up and watch it. Both Iam's audition and the duo with James Blunt. Amazing
James' father had donated one of his kidneys to someone else earlier in his life. When his only remaining kidney became diseased (NOT cancer) he was put on a waiting list for a new kidney. He progressed to stage 4 kidney disease and a donor kidney wasn't yet available and they faced the prospect of his dad dying. James wrote this song and because of it a distant cousin came forward, was tested and found to be a match, and donated a kidney to James' father. He is alive and doing well at last report. The emotion was real and James insisted on the emotion remaining in the video when producers wanted to cut it.
It doesn’t matter how many times I listen to this the tears flow. Tell your loved ones you love them, make that call, message, letter or face to face, it can be short and we never know when our or their time will be. Xx
This song brings me to tears everytime. I lost my Dad in 2012. Such a beautiful tribute to his Dad's battle with kidney failure and his Dad period! ❤ this.
I torture myself with this song. My son was born with only 1 kidney. He died at the age of 13 of kidney failure bc we couldn't get a donor. Its coming up on the 13 year anniversary of his passing in a few days, and here I sit, watching this song over and over, crying like a baby💔
Me and my dad are former military and I managed to get to his bedside to play this song to him just before he died of lung cancer and then 40 days later my wife died in 2022 and my 9 year old daughter sings this song to me all the time so I know what your going throughx
Everything has been said in the previous comments. I didn't understand the song "Monsters" at first, but yes, when we were children we often had nightmares about monsters. Now it's James" time to look after his father and chase the monsters away.
James Blunt is a hell of a song writer. You might have heard him sing "You're beautiful" or "Goodbye my lover", but he's been writing songs for nearly 3 decades. Listen to his latest heartwrenching song "The girl that never was" and "Bravery". Both songs are tearjerkers.
“Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........
I gave a thumbs up even before the song started. A son to father song is , I want to say extremely, rare. Edit... how many men have gone back after their reaction video to watch privately?
Him and hid dad were estranged for years because he left the army 2 pursue music thisbwas when his dad was diagnosed with terminal kidney disease and its his real lofe dad in the video 😢

Kidney disease, not kidney cancer
If you let it play allllll the way to the end, his dad gives him a pat. Just gets me every time. So sweet

Bless your sweet heart. I hope you have many precious, joyful memories to hold close to you.
I'm a new father, and I can't even think about the pain you have. I'm sorry, from one parent to another. May he rest in peace. Be blessed.
Sorry for your loss. 🙏🏻

From what I understand his father had cancer, but beat it. Very touching song.

His dad needed a kidney donated so he reached out to people with this song. Dad got the kidney and is doing well
If you think this is tough to listen to watch Blunt's The Girl Who Wasn't There video.
