I absolutely LOVED my original GameBoy! Took it everywhere and even had the link cable to play 2-player games. My favorite accessory was the magnifying screen with the build in light. Drained the batteries faster, but I still loved it. Great video, dude!
My first Gameboy was the Color one you see at the beginning. Looking back, it was really hard to see without decent lighting!
@@GregsGameRoom back than it was strangely not a big problem.
Remember the soda Surge ? I won a Game Boy Pocket under the cap. The color was already out though so I traded it in and then bought a Game Boy Color (I think my grandma paid the rest of it for my birthday).
There is a way better color version of Super Mario Land 2 out there that I would recommend over the version you showcased.
Also there are color versions of Pokemon Red and Blue that I personally would have included as well.
Yeah, there were several and it's sometimes hard to tell which is the best one.
Metroid 2 has another color version, doesn't it?
@@GregsGameRoom The DX version by toruzz is the best one.
Super Mario Land 2 was modified by a guy who goes by Toruzz, I highly recommend that one. He worked on it for over a year, it’s a very beautiful mod, you can play as Mario or Luigi, and they even have different mechanics
I'll have to check that out. With so many hacks, it's hard to pick the best one.
I was literally looking for a video about this topic! Thanks! Love these "DX" hacks for GameBoy.
No problem, thanks for watching!
9:33 Theres a color hack of super mario land 2 called Super Mario Land 2 DX, with improved colors compared to this version shown on the video, and some bug fixes and possibility to play as Luigi as well. It's a much better hack in general
Thanks for the heads up, a sequel video is starting to formulate now!
I've recently rediscovered the GameBoy, sort of I guess, after not playing on one for a good 20+ years. Trying old games I haven't thought about or played for just as long has been a real treat thus far. That Galaga is definitely at the top of my list.
It’s so underpowered I’m amazed any good games were made for it!
6:50 The idea here is to wait for the platform to reach the bottom before launching Kirby, to get the highest launch possible.
Yeah, I totally botched that everytime. LOL
Oh boy what timing. I just got my EZ-Flash set up and filled with games too! I'll definitely have to go down this rabbit hole. I did notice that the Konami collection for Gameboy color has some Gameboy games with color. castlevania adventure and Contra was 2 I noticed so far. Great video as always!
I was hoping they'd work on the FX Pak Pro but nope. I guess these are considered "DX" games and only work on GB Color.
This is what their gameplays look like on a GameBoy Color.
I want to see all the GB games that were also released for NES colorized!
Revenge of The Gator, Kirby's Dreamland 2, and Mole Mania are all that's left for the mainline Nintendo stuff. Maybe Donkey Kong Land 2. Game and Watch Gallery 1 and 2? Wait! Donkey Kong 94!
Forgot about RotG. That would be a good one to colorize.
We’re these the only games you had as a kid? If they were, then boy did you miss out on some classics.
My first Gameboy was the Color one you see at the beginning. So I started pretty late with it.
All 3 Donkey Kong Land games are in full color now with Donkey Kong 94 in the works! Also Mega Man 1 and 5 are in full color now as well! :D Then there's Balloon Kid, Revenge of The Gator, I think most of the color hacks are by the same dude.
Those colorized games do put those B&W versions of it into shame.
I think so too. But it be cool if the color versions included a B&W option for purists.
They all do look good in color, and there’re also those donkeykong land games colorized as well.
wow this is excellent wish i knew how to colorize certain games
I believe this was all based on Link’s Awakening DX.
Color is nice, but there was a charm to black and white, too. It was virtually impossible to see back in the day but there were many great games.
Agreed, Gameboy games are definitely unique!
Donkey Kong Land is in full color now. So are the Pokemon games.
I had the same GB bag and color/clear as that dude.. wow! I wish I had them back! Faceball and Gallaga hack game is cool!
You don’t have Pack-rat-itis like I do!
@@GregsGameRoom Haha I got desperate and sold it years ago. But I do have pack rat -itis
Snoopy's Magic Show is pretty neat. Ooo you know what'd be sweet? Wario Blast in color!
They look alike in color than the old black and green/black and white. I wish all Game Boy games from 1989-1999 for the original Game Boy were in color. Plus, I had that same Game Boy game and Color/clear, but it lost about 20 years ago, since 2002.
Ok let’s check this out!
Makes you want to play huh?
@@GregsGameRoom Ya. Mario land was the most interesting IMO
not only color, the gbc runs at twice the speed, twice the ram, great potential for modding, i wonder why there arent many mods
Not entirely sure these are hacks because if you place non color game in a gameboy color and fiddle with the buttons on the startup screen you’ll load a color pallet for that game
The GBC color filters look nothing like this though, they still only have 4 colors per game, those button combos just change which 4 colors they are. These colorized hacks allow for 32 colors like a real GBC game
yeah so much great GB games that would be great on color :
- Gargoyle Quest
- Motocross Maniacs
- Wario Land 1 & 2
TMNT 2: back from the sewers would also look very nice in color
I love everything about this except when the sprites were completely revamped. Other than that, this is quite amazing!
For Super Mario Land there's actually an option to use the original sprites.
@@GregsGameRoom Awesome! Thank you for the heads up!
Pokémon red and blue got a color hack and with gen 2 sprites
Will have to try those too. Thanks.
@@GregsGameRoom np
i wish i could have this patch for speedball 2 on the gameboy
Keep looking on Romhacking's website, might show up one day.
@@GregsGameRoom i hope.
maybe i could give the author a request on this page!
If that version of super Mario land came out in the 80s it would have outsold super Mario Bros 3 on NES
I have that same bag
Hey would you know if USA gameboy colour games work in UK gameboy?
How does one go about making one of these hacks?
how hard are these to make? there's surprisingly few of them out there
These were the ones I could get to work. Sometimes it's tricky to find the correct ROM to start with. Seemed to be about 20 or so on the Romhacking website.
The Metroid II hack is unfortunately NOT working in a Gameboy Color, I've tried it with my flashcard. It only works on (some) emulators. For Mario Land 2, as others already said, there's a much better looking version. Nice video nevertheless!
Hm, interesting. Thanks for the info!
