We need our RV to be pet-friendly so we had to install a new rooftop AC. We install a new rooftop Air conditioning unit in our RV. We show how to pull the old unit off of your RV. We also show you what to do with the electrical. This DIY RV Air Conditioner installation should give you enough info so you can install your Air conditioner in your own RV.

You say you removed the exact same air conditioner do you happen to know the model number on that by the video I have the exact same one I need to find a replacement for but all of the Martins have wore off

How did you connect the wires? After watching your video which saves me $800 cause it helps me install the roof unit. But now I’m trying to wire the thermostat from analog to digital. And i have no clue. I’m replacing the Coleman with advent.

The only thing I would do different is wire tie wires. A loose wire could with vibration ground out.

Love the idea of keeping a/c in box to get on roof. I wonder if color coding wires with colored electrical tape- maybe even numbering wires to re-make connections is better than a picture.

Thanks for the vid. I'm gonna tackle mine tomorrow. On your inside vent/access put you a filter in there. Notice you didn't have one. It'll keep your new unit clean or your coils on the inside will get clogged with dust and restrict the airflow

They are usually 14x14 for most vents and ac openings.
Well, whatever the previous owner did or did not do, the air chambers inside the ADU have more metal duct tape on them than I have ever seen from a manufacturer. I think someone was in there making better after they bought it. Travel safe. Henri
It is sad how little time they take at the factory on these things, thats why we buy used now so I can fix them up a bit.

Quick question... I'm trying to replace my trailer ac. My trailer has vents on the ceiling that distributes air in all the rooms.. Am I ordering a "duct" or "non-duct" unit?
That would be the ducted unit if you have vents in other areas.
jUST saw this video,,,,, looks quite easy,,,,ours is quite old, so thinking of replacing it... does it already come filled with coolant or did you have to add it in once installed? Thank you
They come precharged, just hook up the wires and your in business.
Man you made that look easy. I think I will try to tackle that. Ours went out last week and a $2000.00 estimate made me sick.
The hardest part was getting it on the roof, other than that very easy.

@@joegomez8050 Labor is stupid expensive and that was BEFORE the current rapid inflation. My dad is in charge of building maintenance for a series of workshops at his company and if they have to contract out anything the going rate was $125 to $150 a hour JUST FOR LABOR!!!!
I highly recommend simply renting a "material lift" from Home Depot for $55. It can lift 450lbs up to 12ft, and will fit int he back of an SUV or pickup. Made my install super easy and safe.

I didn't notice any explicit work on the roof to unit seal to prevent any water intrusion ... did the replacement unit have a foam seal pre-installed? Did you caulk? Since this video is 2 years old ... have you had any issues with water leaking?
Yes, there was a foam sealer on the bottom. We had that unit for over a year and no issues or leaks of any kind. We couldn't have been happier with the new unit. We upgraded to a fifth wheel almost a year ago. I hope this was helpful and thanks for watching😊
Hello again,,,,, installed the Dometic Brisk II Excelsior 15K air conditioner ------ following your video, it was quite eazy,,,,,, thank you so much.
It did not come with an owners manual ,,,,don't know if I really need one or not ------- Our Keystone Sprinter is a 2004 model, One the thermostat and wall control unit, we have a switch that controls, Air, Heater, Fan speed, and Auto setting. WHen we connected everything and turned on the power,,,, it came on when the Fan switch was turned on and the selector was on Air.. If we left the Air switch on Air, and tunrned off the Fan switch, the unit went off. ---- so,,, I really can't tell if the Cooling part is working or not. I did attach the thermostat to one of the coils. Does it sound like I did everything correctly? How will I know if the Air is working to cool things ? Thank for your help. SOrry so wordy.
Sounds like it's working, wait for the unit to cool down and you should be able to feel cold air coming out of the vent.
Now once you have the one hooked up. Can you still use the hand remote or does the new unit come with one? Thanks 😊
Ours had the wall thermostat wired in to the original bottom half of the AC

Did you need to get the exact same unit or do most fit any rv?
If you replace both the top and bottom section you can use any since the hole size is pretty standard, but we wanted to save the inside controls so we got the same brand/unit.
I have a question, perhaps I miss it but you said something about cutting those other wires after you unplugged the top unit. So you unplug the top unit from the controls and that just comes off so there's only one wire that comes down and obviously your thermostat wire too but the other wires that you said you were going to cut so you knew where they went back together If you're using the same bottom part and not changing that but only the top half why would you need to cut those wires? Sorry if I missed something Thanks!
We ended up just letting the unit hang there so I didn't need to cut the thermostat wires after all.

How do RV rooftop ac’s drain? Where does the condensation go? I didn’t see a tube with either install. Does it pool on the roof??
They just run off the edge of the roof.

I didn't disconnect any wires, the top unit is separate from the bottom unit just unplug it and take it off and I didn't bother removing the shroud either. Only problem I had was the plugs were different

Jeff, it's spelled Caulk. I honestly was thinking chalk and wondering if you knew a secret about using chalk on your roof material prior to sealing, lol. You messed me up for about 2 minutes, hahahaha. And also, no, they typically do NOT caulk the AC units, only using the foam seal they come with. Everything else on the roof gets self-leveling lap sealant all around.
Hello mine just went out and replaced it over the weekend. It rained yesterday and we experienced a leak. It was no water getting in before the rain and I believe the rain is coming in. We just don’t see from where it’s coming from. Did you encounter a leak? What do you suggest we take a look at?
We didn't have any leaks but maybe you didn't tighten the unit enough, the foam gasket has to compress against the roof.

Hi, sorry to bother you again.. have the unit running but the compressor doesnt want to kick in when i put the switch on air....fan comes on when i turn the fan switch on, but compressor is not kicking in. Been running for 1/2 hour. THOUGHTS?
Hard to say, Im not really an RV tech. Did you try to call tech support for Dometic and have them troubleshoot with you?

As supposably guides, why not better yet install a mini split system and show all of its advantages over a root top unit?

How do you know that it will be a quiet AC? Ours is so loud and I would love to change it for a quieter one.
Check the decibel ratings to see how loud they are.

How long should the new unit sit before first operation?
Im not completely sure but it worked by the time we had all the hook ups done.
It's always a good habit to let any refrigeration system sit for at least an hour after setting it in place, to give all the oil in the system time to drain back down to where it belongs before powering it up.

I just took mine Off the roof.
It took two guys, and a special heavy duty scaffolding. 40 min. A guy gave me 30 bucks for the old broke one.
They do get pretty heavy, Im sure they are worth some money at the scrap yard.
How long does it usally take for it to get cold
The new unit gets cold very fast, cools the whole camper in about 15 minutes.

Good video but people please watch videos on installing a mini split heat pump with ac on rv's. I have one myself I will post a video of how I installed it. I travel as an industrial electrician and pull my 2015 4 seasons 40' Heartland 5th wheel with a front bedroom and rear living room. It came with a single overhead loud ac unit placed in the rear so very little air got to the front via duct work plus the gas heat is not the most efficient form of heat nor could it keep it warm in sub zero temps, I even installed a infrared fireplace which helped but now I don't even use the gas heat or even use skirting like a lot of people do in cold climates. The unit produces heat in temps below 18° it's a 120v 16 seer unit that covers 700sq ft. It's so quiet and efficient that my tv is enjoyable to watch now.I bought it new on eBay for $450 complete with precharged lines. I got help and with your info on removal of my old unit we removed it, We cut the hole 6" on each side and nstalled a nice framed in residential flush mount sky light which also has a sliding blackout blind and it can be shut with a 3' wooden long dowel because my ceiling is so tall The skylight is awesome at night to watch the lightening and stars!
I have been doing research on a minisplit, we upgraded to a 5th wheel so once the AC dies I will be installing a mini split since we want to be off grid more. Thanks for the comment!
