"Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary" “Contrary” is one way to describe a murderous psychopath. This popular English nursery rhyme, which reads like a solicitation for gardening advice, is actually-according to many-a recounting of the homicidal nature of Queen Mary I of England, a.k.a. Bloody Mary. A fierce believer in Catholicism, her reign as queen-from 1553 to 1558-was marked by the execution of hundreds of Protestants. (Silver bells and cockle shells, in this understanding, are actually torture devices, not garden accouterments.)

Ren is inspiring in so many ways. I equate him to that rare breed of performer, the David Bowie or Prince, who is not just a good musician and song writer, a story teller, but a performer, a visual artist, a philosopher. A troubadour of his time.

As I'm watching this with you and thinking about the vocal dynamics. It occurs to me that as he compared himself to a volcano/lava as he walks down the hallway at a steady pace but the video picks up speed as the blood flows down the stairs. It gives the feeling of something flowing faster downhill then the wave crashing through the hallway downstairs.
Hey Chris! Glad you're enjoying Ren, he's super talented. Love all his music, but I hope he sings more so you can break it down! Ren has basically 2 albums that he will be releasing while he's in Canada--Sick Boi which focuses on his rap and hip hop and a second that he hasn't said the title of (that I know of) which will focus more on his singing/guitar/piano chops. Trust the process.
I was searching for your reactions to Eva Cassidy. I am pretty surprised she's not come up on your channel. I'm sure we'd all learn a lot from your take on her. She recorded a live album on stage in a DC jazz bar. Soon after she was diagnosed with cancer. Ten months later and she was gone. She should have been a superstar and remains largely unknown. A few tracks off that live album caught on in the UK, but few people in the US know of her. It's been more than 25 years since she passed. I bring her up here, because I love her for much the same reason I love Ren. Her ability to pack her vocals with emotion is flawless. She also self-accompanies on guitar and her chops are incredible. Besides her incredible technical singing ability, her voice was naturally delicious like a Patsy Cline or Chris Stapleton. I guess, if I had to pick a track to start with, "Fields of Gold." She has unique sensibility that lets her cover things in a way that makes them feel completely new while somehow retaining enough respect for the feel of the original. That is, I guess she's most known for her ability to interpret a song you already know.
Chris, I’ve watched a lot of vocal analyses of Ren, but your are by far the best! I’m so impressed with how much you get in there, and take away so much from your first view. Keep it up!
Great reaction Chris! I think Ren tends to draw fans that like that type of experimentation and out of the box thinking when it comes to music and sound. He is so refreshing! I love all the little things I learn from the reactors I watch but your analysis of the vocals stand out among the others. I love listening to your thoughts. Thanks so much!
Absolute genius..... Ren sees where things are going. Not long kiddies. Animal Farm is a beast fable, in the form of a satirical allegorical novella, by George Orwell, first published in England on 17 August 1945. Ren is intricate and masterful at every phase of production, layers, and layers that take you deep inside and down the rabbit hole.

Oh wow, listened to this the first few times on my phone. Now in my car I can appreciate the bass lines!! Wow, this is a powerful song and excellent production!
Nursery rhymes were about other subjects not child like at all. Usually adults sang them to each other. Ren would know this being British. His lyrics remind me of Peter Gabriel using rhymes in early Genesis in a more sinister way. Think Nursery Cryme. Ren is expressing very British lyrics for the world to hear. Love his brash real way of expression!!! The Welsh have a new hero!!! 😊
My kid, half American raised in Britsin, has cone home in the past excited to tell me the truth about a nursery rhyme because they learned the context in a history lesson. I don’t know if she’s just had teachers with an interest or if it’s usual to still teach this, but I bet many teachers address sone of them. It’s not list information here as it is to Americans.
@K yes my late Uncle from Bristol UK mentioned this to me many years ago that it was their telegraph or telegram in medieval times. Easier for illiterate people to remember rhyming songs.
I have been trying to put my finger on what Ren does with his voice when he raps and hearing you describe it vocally what comes to my mind is the patter-song, but with rap and reggae theory/influence applied to it.
I hit a point in this video I need to comment on cos it made me laugh so hard. You're a renowned vocal coach and you're clearly loving the originality of Ren but he does a grunt at one point and you pause it and only reaction you could give at the time was to look at the camera, shrug and chuckle slightly. I love that Ren has made people who do this on a daily basis literally speechless with his talent XD 3:24 the moment
This track makes me think of where the wild things are. I look forward to seeing/hearing your take on the vocal layer's too. I've definitely been experimenting with my voice as well ❤️
Have you checked out Ren in The Big Push. They are a busking band Talk about talent! Ren sings but so do 2 other band members depending on what their playing. They play a lot of cover songs but they have originals, as well. Wade in the water/Nina Simone and I Shot the Sherrif/Road to Zion/Hip Hop are two of my favorite for vocals. I absolutely love how they mash up songs. There performances are live and they take you on a roller coaster ride. ❤
Ren explained in his twitch feed how he recorded the 'beat box' type parts 'for all you producers out there' 😁 He said 'close mic', and 'compress the shit out of it' and 'EQ it by boosting the mids'. I'm definitely going to try it.
just seen his songs called bardcore amazing how pople need to give labels to everything and find a box to lock use in to long may ren escape boxes and labels..
I'm still absorbing tbis one, so much to take in. I am not sure if you have heard our Aussie John Farnham known as The Voice. I'd be interested to hear your reactions. He sings any genre. Suggestions: Help with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar Grenada with Anthony Warlow And heaps more live performances. He underwent cancer surgery last year which included jaw reconstruction so it is doubtful whether he will sing again, but we are lucky to have 50 plus years of his performances. He is much loved ❤
I think what all the vocal coach reactors are missing are the Indian/Pakistani/Punjabi influence. The "Brrrrrrr" & trilled "r's." Straight Bhangra, man! This begins with a nod to the Oompa Loompa music and ends up with Ren walking with his cane like Willy Wonka at the beginning of his factory tour. He also heavily referenced Willy Wonka in Hunger.
Love the analysis! Check out Knox Hill’s reaction to this as the song is based on George Orwells, animal farm, and the political and cultural connotations reflected in his lines about parliament later on in the song. You’ll see George Orwells seven rules on the whiteboard in his opening scene.!!
Another great analysis Chris. Might have been mentioned earlier and you're right. Lots of nursery rhyme's are borne from dark things. E.g "Ring a Ring o' Roses", in the UK, is alleged to be a song about the Bubonic plague!
I think the reason your reviews are so on point is that you don’t necessarily stick to the stuffier side of a musical formula…you enjoy his individualism and poetic license in his songs..he is such a combination platter that may not always make just the main fare of the menu, it’s the appetizer, soup salad, entree and dessert and drinks.. crazy how so many different styles and sounds etc.. can go against the grain and norm yet end up perfection because it’s Ren and he has the music that can’t be bought or sold or taught, but can give motivation for self creation…it just comes from within him.. great react and lesson as always Chris… Thanks!❤🎵❤

Omg I love the breathy rah .. ...
I love how you look like a child seeing a Christmas tree for the first time by discovering a new Ren song. Yes. It’s a Treat.
I would love for you to do some more of his singing vibe tracks like Humble / Ocean.
I really like how in the little lamb lines he studders a bit like sheep noises :D
For example Mary Mary quite contrary is about Queen Mary OR Bloody Mary if you like. Just one example.
This track makes me think of where the wild things are. I look forward to seeing/hearing your take on the vocal layer's too. I've definitely been experimenting with my voice as well ❤️
I was waiting for you to react to this one!
This guy is blowing up right now
I love this song already. Im a huge orwell fan.
Ren explained in his twitch feed how he recorded the 'beat box' type parts 'for all you producers out there' 😁 He said 'close mic', and 'compress the shit out of it' and 'EQ it by boosting the mids'. I'm definitely going to try it.
The Renbit hole… deep, dark and beautiful
great reaction about this new issue by the great artist Ren
So many moving parts ! Love your reactions ❤
just seen his songs called bardcore amazing how pople need to give labels to everything and find a box to lock use in to long may ren escape boxes and labels..
I'm still absorbing tbis one, so much to take in.
I am not sure if you have heard our Aussie John Farnham known as The Voice.
I'd be interested to hear your reactions. He sings any genre.
Suggestions: Help with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar
Grenada with Anthony Warlow
And heaps more live performances.
He underwent cancer surgery last year which included jaw reconstruction so it is doubtful whether he will sing again, but we are lucky to have 50 plus years of his performances. He is much loved
❤
I think what all the vocal coach reactors are missing are the Indian/Pakistani/Punjabi influence. The "Brrrrrrr" & trilled "r's." Straight Bhangra, man! And as for the "not quite beatboxing," see Sheila Chandra "Speaking in Tongues." ruclips.net/video/-WckuAjhCjM/видео.html
Lot of South-Asians living in the UK. I'm just say'n. ✌🏼
OMG Chris - I heard a new (old) Ren song from 7 yrs ago and it's a radio ready song. It's called 'Fire' from the 'Frecked Angels' album. I just saw a reaction to it and i cant find any other reactions. Its being slept on big time! Please have a look at it. You'll love it. ❤
Wouhou first comment! I just listened to Animal Flow :D
Twice!
Late to the party, I know, but I was getting strong V for Vendetta vibes there towards the end. Solid. 💪
Another great analysis Chris.
Might have been mentioned earlier and you're right. Lots of nursery rhyme's are borne from dark things. E.g "Ring a Ring o' Roses", in the UK, is alleged to be a song about the Bubonic plague!
😮❤ as per usual great reaction
Korn describes the violence in the nursery rhymes in Shoots and Ladders
It's amazing man! Can you ever did GRANDSON vocal ANALYSIS ? He's amazing
thankyou for this - i love the vocal abilities , those growls and huffs of distain. i've always liked Jack white for that too.
Love thisssssss!!!
Watching you smile
I think he's changed the pitch and frequency under his vocal for the harmony sounding part
Often Ren has meaningful songs, other times he just wants to have fun.
Animal Farm, evil Willy Wonka.
Its Orweells Animal Farm in a musical edition - Love this 🔥🔥🔥
Gotta comment to come back to this one too lol
