Still miss the great stories of his police work. Robbo and i were both in oceanside in 1968, last year of high school for him, camp p. for me. Nice guy, answered so many of the guys who commented. God bless always.
That's a sharp looking bike man. Its nice seeing another person who isn't afraid to tinker until he gets what he wants, even if what you want changes day to day. Salute from another "ill do it my damn self" kinda person
Thank you brother. Waited a log time to see this. You put in a bunch a work to get this looking as sharp as it does. Your expertise shows in your work. About the only thing I see still stock are your mirrors. Ride safe my friend.
Thanks it does seem like a lot of little things got done. LOL, I was just looking on line at some mirrors but my wife says she didn't like them so who knows I may or may not get them Thanks for commenting
Beautiful sportster. The 72 is one of the best looking harleys made. I rode a 2003 sportster for 10 years and they are a excellent bike. A bit uncomfortable for me as I got older but reliable as can be. Never repaired one thing in 10 years besides routine maintanence. I have a 2002 dyna wide glide now and I hope it's half the bike my sportster was. Mine was a 883 and that engine is indestructible.
JohnnyRebKy Thank you I like so many different models from the 72 to the 48 to the Street Bob the Break Out the Road King & on & on. I was looking for an inexpensive commuter bike and the 72 fit the bill. I hope I get that good of service out of my Sportster. Enjoy the Dyna & thanks for commenting
It looks great. I fell in love with the 72 Sportster after a harley test ride, but Ive been scared that the short range caused by the small tank would drive me to hate the bike. The 4.5 gallon tank is a nice option, and you did a great job with it too.
I fell in love with the 72 because it reminded me of my old chopper that only had a peanut tank on it. I'd forgotten how much of a pain it was constantly stopping for gas. I had to swap for a bigger tank. I just wish someone made a flat bottom peanut style in an FI 5 gal tank. They make them for carb bikes so maybe they will in the future. Thanks for watching & commenting
Great looking bike. Chrome ain't my thing, that's why I have an Iron but your bike is real nice. Doing the work yourself and putting miles on it commuting, respect.
Really dig your bike. Sweet ride Robert. The gas tank makes so much sense. I saw the grief video about the tanks arrival but you've done a great job spraying it. Hope your riding again soon. Take care.
Yes just a fun little thing to fiddle with while riding. Takes me back to the ol days when you had to fiddle with stuff to keep em running lol Thanks for watching & commenting
Thanks for the info. I have the stock pipes still. In fact I've put them back on as the v & h are just to load. Not are a quiet baffle would do much. Missing the nice sound though and will change the muffler. V & h are on eBay to free up the cash
I like the manual idle control. My '09 883 Sportster always sounded idled up, but I sold it before I heard about the m.i.c.. Now I'm thinking about the 72.
Harley has discontinued the 72 line for 2017 Sales weren't high enough I've removed the MIC got to be too much hassle remembering to reset it for cold starts
good lookin scoot brother I have a 99 wide glide that looks kinda like the 72 has white walls 18 inch apes flame paint love that look like your bike is done be safe and GOD bless
LOL Thanks! If I was they'd come with a 6 gal flat bottom tank like the old style Sportster & offer a springer front end & come with stage 1 upgrade, better air cleaners, pipes & optional spring seat from the factory
Robert Robb Yeah. That would about right for this bike. You certainly have a beautiful bike, and I want the same one, only denim black, with apes to match (and a little higher). Then, the first thing I do when I get it home, is pull the heads and send them out to one of the many shops that will basically, fill the heads with weld, and re-grind them out to achieve as close to a 100% cylinder fill without going by way of cam upgrade if possible. Before and after dyno tests. New hobby anyway, what the hell.
***** IMO if they did this from the factory they'd save on the stock crap but would charge more for the springer & stage 1, just like they did on the FXSTS or on the CVO bikes. I think there'd be a market for them just like there was for those. I'd be willing to pay up front for those mods. As for my 4.5 gal tank it's the same one they use on the Sportster Custom
The Iron went from $7900 to $8300 for the next model year and the only difference I could see was a better gauge and some new buttons. Imagine how much more they'd charge if something noticeably different had been made standard. I think the only things made standard on entry level H-D bikes should be safety related, like ABS and LED headlamps.
***** if HD did ABS the price would really jump as for the difference in Iron price was probably more to do with inflation rather than improvements & IMO their LED head light sucks. Sounds like you should check out other manufacturers that make just as nice if not better bikes for less money. HD charges a lot just for their name & don't need to advance design because people keep buying them.
You should relocate the front turn signals to the forks. It would be uniform with the back lights. Possibly change them out to a smaller style as well. Saw this on a previous video, they looked nice.
I don't have a video showing how I made it. You can now buy brackets from DK Customs to move your seat back. You don't have to make your own. Then just drill a new hole in the fender for the rear mount blind nut. I also removed the middle rear fender bolt & replaced with a button head bolt so the seat doesn't slip into it anymore. You can mount the new bracket to the factory bracket by drilling two holes & bolting it on the front bracket or remove the seat covering & replace the stock bracket with the new bracket then replace the seat cover
beautiful bike Robert! I'm in the process of buying a 72 or a fat boy quick question since the 72 has a skinnier tire in the front do you feel the ground impact more ? and all the cracks on the ground while riding opposed to a fatter front tire ? reason I asked since on your other video you said you've had many different bikes and I want to make a right first purchase of my bike thanks!
+SionFts Dragon Thanks & yes you do fel the cracks etc in the road more with the skinnier front tire & lighter bike. If I had to choose between a Sportster or a Fat boy for my only bike I'd choose the Fat boy. But since you say this will be your first bike you might want to consider a Street Bob It's a level between those two & better suited as a first bike than a Fat Bob. If price is a factor you might look at the Sportster 48 I think it's better suited as a first bike than the 72. I wouldn't recommend the 72 as a first bike IMO
Hey Robert Robb! I know its been awhile since you posted this video but I wanted to know if you are still using the manual idle control valve and if you had any issues with it? I'm looking to get one and wanted to know where you got yours at. Thanks so much for any info you may have.
I'm no longer using it. It became to much trouble having to manually adjust it as the bike warmed up in traffic & I always forgot to turn it back before starting it cold LOL If you decide to get one I got it at www.american-motors.us It was kind of a pain to remove stock controler to install the manual control. You have to remove the gas tank to get to the bolts & heat the bolts to loosen the lock tite used by the factory to remove the small bolts and the break easily. I don't think it's worth the trouble & costs just to be able to get that Harley low idle sound
Nice ride Rob, I am back for a second view....I have not read comments below but have you had any issue with the "wobble" that I read so much about ?? I took a 2015 72 for a good test ride and found nothing of the sort. Keep posting vids I enjoy watching in the downtime. Cheeers.
Yes I did experience that ( freeway speeds ) but once I changed out the stock front tire & used dyna beads to balance it the wobble went away. The stock front tire was so bad that i had a ridiculous amount of wheel weights on the rim but not any more. I went to Shynko tires instead of Dunlop big difference in handling
I stumble across your videos a lot and enjoy them. Was wondering what your 72 looked like. Now I know! Very nice! Those 4.5 gal tanks can be kind of finicky. My light will come on and off at times depending on how hard I'm riding. With plenty of gas still in tank. Kind of annoying but eh whatever.
+Robert Robb if the tank wasn't raised, would the light still come on sooner? also, how many miles per gallon do you get now? (on average) im torn between a 3.3 and 4.5 gallon tank replacement for my 72.
Angel Arenas If the tank was at stock height I'd get more distance btn fill ups before the light comes on because the fuel pick up would stay covered in gas longer but the light still comes on way to soon IMO. I average 40 mpg with all my mods, stock is 50 mpg. I choose the 4.5 gal because I wanted to get the most range out of it. The 4.5 isn't that much bigger than the 3.3 & looks cool
stock height & no performance mods with a 4.5 gal tank @ 50 mpg I'd guess light would come on around 150 - 175 miles leaving you with 1 or 1.5 gals in the tank. Mine comes on at 100 miles because of the lift & performance mods @ 40 mpg leaving 1.5 gals in the tank. I doubt anyone gets 200 miles without the light coming on unless they get better than factory claimed mileage or maybe the 883 engine? If you're looking for longer distance get a stock Street Bob with 6 gear trans & bigger tank?
looks great , Billy my buddy has gone a different route with getting the side covers and belt drive cover painted in the candy red flake paint but both yours and his I think look nice!when you made a bracket for the front of the seat to fit, how then did the rear bracket bolt on to the rear fender? any modifications? his is the same motorcycle as yours, he has also put the wide glide front forks on his as he liked them on his old sporster! ride safe Rob!
I also painted my stock side covers & belt guard red metal flake but my wife & I liked the chrome ones better I just drilled a new hole further back in the fender and put in one of those blind nut things from HD
Hi,, who did you say made your air cleaner cover,, I'm running a stealth S&S air cleaner,, which you can use your old stock football Style air cleaner cover, but I'm just looking for a small Billet cover to screw into the center,, just cover up the black outer filter cover . I guess I can go to a machine shop have him plasma cut me one, Anyway thanks for the video, any extra information on air cleaner cover much appreciated..
The air cleaner is actually a custom cleaner for a car I found on line & I adapted it to the backing plate for a Sportster I also found on line by drilling new bolt mounting holes & widening the hole to the throttle body base & I used DK Custom's outlaw breather bolts. You can find similar 5" dia. air covers at local auto parts stores that use K&N filters & adapt the base to fit. Since this I've changed to DK Customs 636 outlaw air cleaner That flows much more air for better performance. Check you local Jr College see if they've got a CAD / machine class that teaches making billet parts & get a student to do one for you?
I'm very bias to the old school peanut tank. I ride a 2003 1200 with a 3.3. I like the old school chopper look usually on Sporties. But I actually quite shocked to say that I like that 4.5 on there. It looks real good. And plus you can ride about 150 miles before filling it up. How much more do you like the progressive shocks in the back compared to the stock?
I like the old Sportster style tanks also. That's one of the things I liked about the 72 but I couldn't take having to stop at the gas station 1 or 2 times a day to fill up on longer rides. I wish someone would make a larger tank that style for the FI bikes. When they do I'll buy one. The rounded 4.5 gal Custom Sportster tank was all I could find besides the 5 gal Indian Larry style tank with the dished sides which I didn't care for as much. People have a hard time figuring out what model it is. With that tank on it it looks like a much bigger Harley. Those who don't know bikes that well think it is LOL The progressive shocks are a little better than stock but if I had to do it over again I'd try the "Burley" shorter shocks & see if they're better than HD or Progressives. If I didn't want to lower the rear I'd try air shocks off a bigger Harley for a softer ride. But I wanted to slam it while still being able to ride two up occasionally. Thanks for commenting.
I have made some changes since this video was made. Man I didn't realize how many little changes I've made but here's a list of stuff Harley Dealer; Chrome side covers, Chrome belt covers, leather tool bag, modified headlight mount, J&P Cycles; 4" risers, Chrome Colony tube spiked nuts, 4.5 gal gas tank, Skull gas cap, hand grips, foot pegs, Arleen Ness Blue saphire mirrors, progresive 1" lowering RR shocks, LED under fender rear brake light, DK Customs; 636 V air cleaner ( not the one in video replaced home made air cleaner from car parts from Auto Zone & different cycle companies ), Coil relocation kit, 2" gas tank lift, Internet; Chrome short shot pipes similar to V&H short shots ( not on in this video replaced HD SE slip ons w/ DK Custom TTI's ), LaPera spring seat ( replaced Mustang seat in video from J&P Cycles ), LED head light bulb, Cobra FI 2000R fuel unit, I removed the manual idle control ( didn't like it ) Indy shop; Shinko 777 www tires I hope this satisfies your curiousity There might be other little things I forgot? I had other changes planned that have now been sidelined since being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last month. I'll probably have to sell both my bikes before I pass away soon or leave it to my wife to do after I'm gone
Sorry to hear about the cancer not much I can say but enjoy you're family cuz you know they will enjoy the time with you and make every moments last I hope for the best for you and you're family take care ...
yea the stock seat sucks! I even tried taking it apart and put in a gel pad and moved it back a little but still not as good as an after market seat like the Mustang. The HD Sundowner is the most comfy I've found so far but it looks bulky on the 72 looks better on a Custom. I'm making a solo spring seat fro the 72 to try out later but got side lined with the Softail work to be done
The position I see people riding the bike doesn't seem ergonomic. But as you open saying you commute with it.. makes it more interesting. I like the old looking bikes and loving yours. If you could answer my question you will be welcome. Oh btw the question is... how is it to sit and ride for longer trips alike a day ride or a couple. Thanks
good question, wish I had a good answer, but. I'm 63 yrs old, have more injuries than I can remember, need 6 different surgeries, according to my doctors I shouldn't even be riding. I find the riding position of the 72 to be like sitting in a recliner with an engine on wheels. In my opinion better then sitting up straight or laying over the tank both of which would kill my back. I can't ride for more than 3 hrs or couple hundred miles at a time. When I was young & healthy I rode a rigid frame chopper that was same sitting style and could ride all day. Depending on your situation you may or may not like the 72. It's meant to be a short commuter bar hopper bike. If you want a bike for long trips I'd suggest a cruiser or sport touring bike depending on what you like. I'd like a Can Am Spyder for long trips myself Thanks for your question
I'd look for a nice used one that already has a better seat, pipes, air cleaner, fuel processor, stage 1, etc for a couple thousand less. Or get a Street Bob with a bigger engine & 6 speed trans :)
hey Robert, bike looks so cool, real bad ass one!!! i see ya ordered the manual idle control in good old germany, how do ya like it? i use about 8 clicks on the idle and it really rumbles and gives you the old school potato sound the new harleys just dont have. ride safe bro,....greets GGlitter
Thanks, I'm pretty happy with all my changes so far. I like fiddling with the idle control especially being able to lower it below what the stock electric does. I don't get to sit an idle much to enjoy the potato sound but when I do it's nice. Thanks for turning me on to that upgrade
Looking for some exhaust info. I've got v & h short shots on my superlow and they sound like a Harley but to loud for me. I'm thinking of the screamin eagle slip ons, what are they like for noise. I'm wanting something which sounds like a Harley but not very loud. The stock pipes sound poor. Thanks Andy
Andy Stott you can always experiment with different baffles to lower the decibels in the V&H. I don't know how V&H short shots would work with any slip on muffler I don't think they were designed for that but I could be wrong. I'd contact V&H see what they say. I bet you could find someone who'd trade you Harley pipes with Screaming Eagles slip ons or another brand slip on for those V&H. Any slip on with the baffles in would be better than the stock mufflers but quieter than the V&H short shots even with baffles in those. V&H are very loud I removed my baffles in the SE & installed DK Custom TTI's. They're loud if you're not wearing a full face helmet
Danny Sano Hi hope you enjoy your new 72I had to modify some cables but not buy/change out cables or wires. for the throttle side I simply bent the cables from 90* downward to achieve extra length needed. For brake line I moved clamp rubber piece on line. For clutch there was just enough length but I do plan to buy a longer steel covered cable in future. Doing wire tuck & tank lift gave me enough extra length in control wires on bars.
That's a clean looking bike man! I'm saving up for the same bike but new 2015. I've watched a lot of your vids and others for a good idea how I'd like to customize mine. Do you ride solo or do your ride with others?
Thanks There's some changes I'd make to it if i had the extra cash like V&H 2 into 1 big radius pipes & a springer front end but it'll do for now. I ride solo probably 95% of the time.
Hey Rob, I'm looking for a new seat. Actually i got the LePera Bare Bone seat (it's not comfortable after 30 mins), and you say that Mustang Wide Vintage is more comfortable than the Mustang daytripper seat? Did you test it out?
I've sat on the Mustang wide vintage seat on other bikes in the past and it had a lot more padding than the day tripper does, so yea IMO it's better but looks old school fat. Another seat I have & like is the Harley SunDowner two up seat. I've got one off Ebay for about $100 less than HD sells them for. I think you could find either one used on Ebay & maybe even do a trade? lots of people want the Le Pera because of it's name recognition
Thinking of buying my first bike.. looking serious at a 2016 HD Seventy Two. Anything I should know first ? Love your bike.. will be riding local... Thank you for sharing!!!.
Yes 1st it has a small gas tank only good for around town. If you plan to ride further get a 48 or Custom or plan on swapping out to a larger tank. 2 cd it has forward controls & most people prefer mid controls, easier to learn on. Test ride both a 72 & 48 before you purchase a bike. 3 rd If you plan on riding with friends that have sport bikes plan on being at the back as most liter sport bikes can out rev & run a stock Sportster any day. 4 th with the longer front end & larger front wheel they handle much differently then other bikes & take getting used to. 5th if you're dead set on a Harley look at the Street Bob It's bigger & better & you'll keep it longer IMO. If you're not set on a Harley test ride other bikes to see what best fits you & your riding style Good luck on whatever you purchase
i just got the same tank for my 48 and i was wondering if you purchased the large capacity fuel tank kit that harley recommends or if you just used all the existing parts and gaskets?
Saul Flores I re-used my existing fuel pump with gasket out of the stock 72 tank. I have no idea why you would need or what would be different about Harleys large capacity fuel tank kit. I looked at it & it looked just like my stock 72 pump. If you're careful removing & installing yours you won't need a new gasket or any other parts. It's a tight fit to get in & out so be very careful so you don't destroy any part of it.
Robert Robb :Thanks Robert, yes I made some changes beginning this year and I have some others in mind....... (need some extra money). That's my passion after family.... Ride safe
bigdogbuc I liked the looks of it but not the short range so I had to swap it out for something bigger. I'm happy with how it turned out but wish I could find the flat bottom style Sportster tank in a 5 or 6 gal size
Yeah, I have no interest in stopping every 100 miles. My Night Train was pretty thirsty with that carbureted TC 88, Screamin' Eagle intake, and Paughco Goose-Neck Drag Pipes, but I still got a couple hundred miles + per tank.
bigdogbuc That's a big problem with their newer FI bikes that have the internal pump. You don't get to use all the gas inside the tank because of the location of the fuel pick up inside. With the older carb'd bikes it just mattered where your petcock set on the tank & you got a lot more distance between fill ups. IDK if other bike manufacturers have the same problem with their FI bikes
Robert Robb I just noticed your tank emblem is the same one that came on my Night Train. Nice. Oddly, I think I've changed my mind and I'm going to go for the 72. The more I looked at it, the more I realized I was basically going to turn the Iron into the 72; Forward Controls, 1200 Conversion, taller bars, etc. By the time I spent the time and money doing it all, it would cost me as much as the 72. And the payment would only be about $35 more a month. Plus, I love the laced wheels and "narrow glide" front end, which reminds me of the Wide Glide on my old Night Train. I'm still not digging the low fuel capacity, but I'll get past it. If you figure out how to get the full 4 gallons out of yours, let us know.
bigdogbuc Yea you can't get new decals anymore as most of them are painted on at the factory now. The Night Train decal was the nicest one I could find for sale that I liked. I like the laced wheels over the cast wheels also but it seems they're using more cast wheels now. Even if I hadn't done the tank lift I still wouldn't use all the gas in the tank because of the design of the internal fuel pump/filter system for the FI bikes. If Harley had an external pump system it'd be better but they put it inside for cooling reasons. Just got to get an extra fuel tank/bag like La Rosa makes I guess. Enjoy your new bike, they're fun!
I loved the nostalgic look of the little tank but not the mileage restriction Now with the bigger tank I get further between fill ups and people always asking what kind of Harley is that? lol
No not that tank but that company has had a good reputation here in Calif for years for all types of bike related products from frames to springer front ends etc.
Robert Robb always a little weary of buying from companies I don't know, especially as everything so easy to buy these days with the internet. So a good reputation is nice to hear. Thanks
Hey Rob, about how much of a pain / cost was it to switch out the tank? I know you said buying the two tanks from jp was a pain, but I mean other than that. Thanks!
+Juan Morales The tank cost around $250= & I spent about another $100= on body filler & paint etc. Besides the problem with JP Cycles the hardest part was just getting the right amount of red metal flake mixed into the clear to match the factory paint which surprisingly I got lucky on with my second test spray I used the original fuel pump & gasket & mounting bolts & shortened the over flow hose by just cutting it I had to make a mount to move the 72 seat back about an inch because it sticks forward more than a seat for a 48 or custom but that wasn't that hard to do. It's actually very easy aside from the painting unless you have experience painting like I do
Thanks for the reply Robert! As I have said before, I think your bike looks great, and I want to modify my 72 some as well. The tank is one of the top things I am looking at right now in changing, and I am excited about it. I watch a video of you mentioning that the gas light would come on, but you would still have 2 gallons of gas or so still, and that perhaps if the tank wasn''t lifted it would be better (in that sense), so if I don't have to do a lift, I don't think I will.
Juan Morales You're welcome. Yea the light will come on later & you'll get to use more of the gas in the tank if you don't lift it, just because of how the fuel pump pick up is located inside the tank. HD's internal fuel pump design is a joke, IMHO P.S. I forgot to mention the $100= it cost for the HD decal off of E bay ( HD doesn't sell them anymore ) Good luck
I bought the 72 because I liked the looks better than any other Sportster model. I changed the tank because I didn't like having to stop for gas ALL the time. IMO it still looks better than any other Sportster model. Part of the fun of owning a bike is customizing it to your taste. Thanks for commenting anyways
everyone's entitled to their opinion. That's the same size/style tank Harley uses on all their 4.5 gal Sportster bikes so I guess you don''t like any of them either I like it and that's all that matters Thanks for watching & commenting ;)
Reegan, keep your homosexual fantasies to yourself bro or stay on the gay porn sites you frequent. RUclips is no place for that kind of talk. Not that there's anything wrong with your gayness, to each his own.
everyones entitled to their opinion. I don't think it's run of the mill looking with the custom tank paint job. I've not seen one like it. Nor my custom made air cleaner. It doesn't look like that anymore. I've changed the air cleaner, seat & pipes and now it does look more like everyone elses Sportster lol
Still miss the great stories of his police work. Robbo and i were both in oceanside in 1968, last year of high school for him, camp p. for me. Nice guy, answered so many of the guys who commented. God bless always.
Great job with the tank.
Was gonna go smaller, but not anymore.
Gostin the coil makes for a perfect finish! AWESOME!!!!
That's a sharp looking bike man. Its nice seeing another person who isn't afraid to tinker until he gets what he wants, even if what you want changes day to day. Salute from another "ill do it my damn self" kinda person
Ryan Foss Thanks Yea i always prefer to do it myself whenever possible

RIP Robert !! MERRY CHRISTMAS up in Heaven, God Bless your family, especially those little ones.......
Hi Robert, A lot of love on that bike, Great looking. Thanks for showing. RSM8
Thank you. A lot of love & work. I'm glad to be able to share it with all of you. Thanks for watching & commenting
Love that ride. The 72 is one of the best looking sportys on the road.
I agree but I also like the 48 I wouldn't mind having one of each in the garage then maybe a custom with a sidecar just for fun
Lol who wouldn't. I ride a fxdc now but always have love for the sporty
Really dig your bike. Sweet ride Robert. The gas tank makes so much sense. I saw the grief video about the tanks arrival but you've done a great job spraying it. Hope your riding again soon. Take care.
Sadly he passed
Yes it's very sad.
Gorgeous bike.
Thank you
I like the manual idle control, that's cool, I have a Power Vision tuner and can adjust mine through that.
Yes just a fun little thing to fiddle with while riding. Takes me back to the ol days when you had to fiddle with stuff to keep em running lol Thanks for watching & commenting
Totally impressed. Totally. Beautiful work. And... I agree about JP.
Thank you for the compliment. I'll never order a tank from them again
Sweet
Thank You
Robbs you are missed. ride that sportster in heaven bro really hard!
I also was a follower of robb. huge loss. I been following saddletramp another Harley rider and repair.
beautiful motorcycle
Thank You
Thanks for the info. I have the stock pipes still. In fact I've put them back on as the v & h are just to load. Not are a quiet baffle would do much. Missing the nice sound though and will change the muffler. V & h are on eBay to free up the cash

Harley has discontinued the 72 line for 2017 Sales weren't high enough
I've removed the MIC got to be too much hassle remembering to reset it for cold starts
Great Coverage walk around, love the engine chrome stands out👍
Thank you I really love this bike
good lookin scoot brother I have a 99 wide glide that looks kinda like the 72 has white walls 18 inch apes flame paint love that look like your bike is done be safe and GOD bless
+GunNut BikeNut Sounds like a nice bike. You need to get a camera and start posting up vids I've not seen any on your channel
I have thought about it would have to have kids help this is about as far as my computer skills run lol
+GunNut BikeNut I had to have my son help me learn how to do it also & I'm still learning
yea they show me something almost every day on these things sometimes I kinda abuse electronic things
Got the flake dancing nice in the sun mate, lovely :)
Ah yes it does look good out in the sunshine, Thanks for watching & commenting
beautiful! I have an 05 Roadster, lowered, and I changed the mufflers so far.
Thank you
Good for you enjoy it
I love your bike man... Have a good ride
Thank you
niiiiiice ride man, lovin the colours, the metal flake finish is popping nicely in the sun. 😀 👍 👍
Thank you I appreciate your compliment
Man, you should be the person in charge of the design of the sportster line up.
LOL Thanks! If I was they'd come with a 6 gal flat bottom tank like the old style Sportster & offer a springer front end & come with stage 1 upgrade, better air cleaners, pipes & optional spring seat from the factory
Robert Robb
Yeah.
Good looking bike man! She was nice before but now, WOW! You may have to get another one so you can keep playing...
thank you, I guess I'll use all my free time to ride. Thanks for watching & commenting
Awesome bike, awesome vid, awesome everything.
Thank you very much Mario
You're welcome. I subbed your channel because I really like your riding vids. Very entertaining.
Mario Flores :) Thank you
BIke looks and sounds great Robert!
Thank you I appreciate your comments
Worth all the money and time you invested.
Yes a lot of time & money. I haven't set down and figured out how much money maybe I don't want to know LOL Thanks for watching & commenting
I have A 2014 72 denim black.... Love it!
That paint job is SICK! cool bike man
Thank you
You should relocate the front turn signals to the forks. It would be uniform with the back lights. Possibly change them out to a smaller style as well. Saw this on a previous video, they looked nice.
I would love to see a video of what you did to move your seat back.
Robert Robb where do you see that on the dk site? I don't see a seat relocation.
fourstringin it's in the frame/suspension category then under solo seats section. I know strange they put it under frames/suspension?
very nicely done, indeed
+shavguru Thank you I still have a couple of other things I'd like to do some day to her when I get some spare cash
Very Clean bike
mrodriguez559 Thank you very much appreciate the compliment & thanks for commenting
Nice looking bike.
Sweet ride man.
Thanks! Since this video I've put on short shot pipes, a solo spring seat & a DK Customs air cleaner. It's now louder & faster!
I love what you did with your 72 looks sweet
Thank you
great bike. thanks for the walk around!
Thanks for the compliment & you're welcome & thank you for watching & commenting
Miss you and your videos bud. RIP
I just bought a 2015 72 last week. It's my first bike, and I'm in love. ^.^
Nice fucking bike man!
+Juan Morales congrats on your purchase I still love riding mine everyday to work & back
Thanks!
And that's cool man!
Wow, nice bike.
beautiful bike bro!!!
Nojan Dorson Thank you
Love what u did
Sweet horse brother
Sporty 72 very nice
Thanks Enrico & hank you for wtching & your comment
I'm not big on Harley's personally, but the 72 even stock is a very nice looking bike.
+rclines001 The 72 is an aquired taste. Not many see it's importance in the Harley line up Glad you do
beautiful bike Robert!
+Robert Robb
thanks for tip man I will check out that bike you recommended greatly appreciate it!
Hey Robert Robb! I know its been awhile since you posted this video but I wanted to know if you are still using the manual idle control valve and if you had any issues with it? I'm looking to get one and wanted to know where you got yours at. Thanks so much for any info you may have.
I'm no longer using it. It became to much trouble having to manually adjust it as the bike warmed up in traffic & I always forgot to turn it back before starting it cold LOL
If you decide to get one I got it at www.american-motors.us
It was kind of a pain to remove stock controler to install the manual control. You have to remove the gas tank to get to the bolts & heat the bolts to loosen the lock tite used by the factory to remove the small bolts and the break easily. I don't think it's worth the trouble & costs just to be able to get that Harley low idle sound
Robert Robb Really appreciate the feedback! Thanks so much!!!
R.I.P Mr. Robb ride in paradise
Yea that's everyones complaint with the FI Sportser especially if you raise your tank the light comes on sooner.
Thanks for watching & commenting
+Robert Robb yes sir, it's absolutely amazing... thank you for sharing. so filling up, would you say maybe 200 miles till the warning light?
stock height & no performance mods with a 4.5 gal tank @ 50 mpg I'd guess light would come on around 150 - 175 miles leaving you with 1 or 1.5 gals in the tank. Mine comes on at 100 miles because of the lift & performance mods @ 40 mpg leaving 1.5 gals in the tank. I doubt anyone gets 200 miles without the light coming on unless they get better than factory claimed mileage or maybe the 883 engine?
If you're looking for longer distance get a stock Street Bob with 6 gear trans & bigger tank?
looks great
, Billy my buddy has gone a different route with getting the side covers and belt drive cover painted in the candy red flake paint but both yours and his I think look nice!when you made a bracket for the front of the seat to fit, how then did the rear bracket bolt on to the rear fender? any modifications? his is the same motorcycle as yours, he has also put the wide glide front forks on his as he liked them on his old sporster! ride safe Rob!
I also painted my stock side covers & belt guard red metal flake but my wife & I liked the chrome ones better
I just drilled a new hole further back in the fender and put in one of those blind nut things from HD
The manual idle control does that adjust the air fuel mixture on the fly or how high the rpms runs?
I think i just answered my own question...lol it lets you adjust idle rpm....brain fart moment
correct idle rpm only I took it off because I got tired of playing with it went back to the electric factory control
Hi,, who did you say made your air cleaner cover,, I'm running a stealth S&S air cleaner,, which you can use your old stock football Style air cleaner cover, but I'm just looking for a small Billet cover to screw into the center,, just cover up the black outer filter cover
. I guess I can go to a machine shop have him plasma cut me one,
Anyway thanks for the video, any extra information on air cleaner cover much appreciated..
Nice bike!
Thanks It's different & fun to ride
Those who don't know bikes that well think it is LOL
The progressive shocks are a little better than stock but if I had to do it over again I'd try the "Burley" shorter shocks & see if they're better than HD or Progressives. If I didn't want to lower the rear I'd try air shocks off a bigger Harley for a softer ride. But I wanted to slam it while still being able to ride two up occasionally. Thanks for commenting.
Can u put a list of the custom parts you installed and If possible where you purchased them its hella nice Sportster
Thank you
I can try to do a list if you give me a day to think about it but I don't remember off hand where I bought everything
I have made some changes since this video was made. Man I didn't realize how many little changes I've made but here's a list of stuff
Harley Dealer; Chrome side covers, Chrome belt covers, leather tool bag, modified headlight mount,
J&P Cycles; 4" risers, Chrome Colony tube spiked nuts, 4.5 gal gas tank, Skull gas cap, hand grips, foot pegs, Arleen Ness Blue saphire mirrors, progresive 1" lowering RR shocks, LED under fender rear brake light,
DK Customs; 636 V air cleaner ( not the one in video replaced home made air cleaner from car parts from Auto Zone & different cycle companies ), Coil relocation kit, 2" gas tank lift,
Internet; Chrome short shot pipes similar to V&H short shots ( not on in this video replaced HD SE slip ons w/ DK Custom TTI's ), LaPera spring seat ( replaced Mustang seat in video from J&P Cycles ), LED head light bulb, Cobra FI 2000R fuel unit, I removed the manual idle control ( didn't like it )
Indy shop; Shinko 777 www tires
I hope this satisfies your curiousity There might be other little things I forgot?
I had other changes planned that have now been sidelined since being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last month. I'll probably have to sell both my bikes before I pass away soon or leave it to my wife to do after I'm gone
Robert Robb Sr. Thanks for the list sweet bike
Sorry to hear about the cancer not much I can say but enjoy you're family cuz you know they will enjoy the time with you and make every moments last I hope for the best for you and you're family take care ...
you're welcome & thank you
oh and he never stops complaining about how uncomfortable the stock seat is!
yea the stock seat sucks!
I'd like a Can Am Spyder for long trips myself
Thanks for your question
bad ass sir
Thank you :)
+Robert Robb the seventy-two is my dream bike
Cameron Creviston I hear Harley is discontinuing the 72 because of poor sales compared to the Custom & 48
+Robert Robb looks like I gotta get one sooner than later
V&H are very loud
I removed my baffles in the SE & installed DK Custom TTI's. They're loud if you're not wearing a full face helmet
Hi Robert, After watching many videos of yours I got myself 2015 72. When you installed 4" riser did you need to change any cables? Thanks.
Hey,great video and thank you for sharing . Where did you get the 4.5gallon tank from?..it looks perfect .thank you
I think he said J&P cycles
Robert Robb Great advice!
awesome bike, what MPG do you get with it ?
i just got the same tank for my 48 and i was wondering if you purchased the large capacity fuel tank kit that harley recommends or if you just used all the existing parts and gaskets?
Saul Flores I re-used my existing fuel pump with gasket out of the stock 72 tank. I have no idea why you would need or what would be different about Harleys large capacity fuel tank kit. I looked at it & it looked just like my stock 72 pump. If you're careful removing & installing yours you won't need a new gasket or any other parts. It's a tight fit to get in & out so be very careful so you don't destroy any part of it.
Hey! I have the same bike. Can you paint the tank for me? Do you do this for money?
HI Robert,
what do you think bout mine Sporty 1200 custom ??
looking good! looks like you've made a few changes to make it your own. Enjoy it & ride safe
Robert Robb :Thanks Robert, yes I made some changes beginning this year and I have some others in mind....... (need some extra money). That's my passion after family.... Ride safe
Nice Bro...
Hows that 72 treating you?
I like it.
No motor work?
does the lift kit impair it from using all the gas in the tank?
Yes
It does look like it could be a show bike.
Well thank you for that compliment but I don't know about that. Maybe in a daily rider division. Thanks for watching & commenting
That 2.1 gal tank was a real turn off for me. Looks great!
bigdogbuc I liked the looks of it but not the short range so I had to swap it out for something bigger.
Love the bigger tank look. I'm gonna do the same I rekon to my little sportster
I loved the nostalgic look of the little tank but not the mileage restriction Now with the bigger tank I get further between fill ups and people always asking what kind of Harley is that? lol
Robert Robb I'm looking at inporting a paughco 4.2 gal tank over to uk. (822C model number) have you had any experience with that tank? Thank you
No not that tank but that company has had a good reputation here in Calif for years for all types of bike related products from frames to springer front ends etc.
Robert Robb always a little weary of buying from companies I don't know, especially as everything so easy to buy these days with the internet. So a good reputation is nice to hear. Thanks
I've never heard any bad things about the company so I hope it all works out OK you'll certainly stick out from the crowd with their tank installed
What size shocks are those?
+Johnny Cabral 11" progressive shocks They're better than the stock HD shocks but IDK if Burleys might be better?
+Robert Robb cool thank you! Such a dope bike by the way.
+Johnny Cabral Thanks
Hey Rob, about how much of a pain / cost was it to switch out the tank? I know you said buying the two tanks from jp was a pain, but I mean other than that. Thanks!
+Juan Morales The tank cost around $250= & I spent about another $100= on body filler & paint etc.
Besides the problem with JP Cycles the hardest part was just getting the right amount of red metal flake mixed into the clear to match the factory paint which surprisingly I got lucky on with my second test spray
I used the original fuel pump & gasket & mounting bolts & shortened the over flow hose by just cutting it
I had to make a mount to move the 72 seat back about an inch because it sticks forward more than a seat for a 48 or custom but that wasn't that hard to do.
HD's internal fuel pump design is a joke, IMHO
P.S. I forgot to mention the $100= it cost for the HD decal off of E bay ( HD doesn't sell them anymore )
Good luck
I have a 95 XL 883 DLX Sportster I want to go to the 2 inch stretch 4,5 gal Bob tank with the smooth top
sounds nice
Nice, except the fuel tank. I prefer the original tank. If you want more fuel capacity, you must has been bought a 1200 Custom, not a 72.
I bought the 72 because I liked the looks better than any other Sportster model. I changed the tank because I didn't like having to stop for gas ALL the time. IMO it still looks better than any other Sportster model. Part of the fun of owning a bike is customizing it to your taste. Thanks for commenting anyways
Tank screws up the whole look. Way too big, looks goofy. Cool bike though.
everyone's entitled to their opinion.
Calm down bro your gona have a stroke breathing that hard lol.
Looks very nice but not as good as the original, the original was beautiful yours looks more run of the mill.
everyones entitled to their opinion. I don't think it's run of the mill looking with the custom tank paint job. I've not seen one like it. Nor my custom made air cleaner. It doesn't look like that anymore. I've changed the air cleaner, seat & pipes and now it does look more like everyone elses Sportster lol
