    You know, I almost bought a Seventy Two, because I really like the look of it, but I was absolutely NOT going for a 2 gallon tank, and I wasn't sure what a "four-five" would look like on it. Now I see it actually looks pretty good!
    Still, I ended up getting a Softail Deuce. But maybe if that ever goes away, I might reconsider the Seventy Two.

      Softail Deuce was a better choice IMO The 72 has been eliminated by Harley after 2016

      @@dawnrobb8809 yes but that 72 is cheap to buy compared to the other bikes and is in my opinion worth having in the garage next to the bagger.

    FWIW. I have a '15 XL1200CP with a 4.5G tank. My low-fuel light usually comes on at 130 miles. As a test, I ran it dry at 160 miles. Refill was 4.0 gallons with another 1/8 gallon if I stood the bike upright.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  7 лет назад +1

      I wont run mine dry since I heard from my INDY shop it causes the fuel pump to go out faster since the gas inside the tank is what keeps it cool?

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  7 лет назад +1

      Harley started using fuel pumps ( inside the tank ) on Sportsters in 07 ( I think ) when they switched to fuel injection over the old carb style. All FI Harleys have a fuel pump on them now. It's where the location of the pump pick up is that limits you distance & the idiot light ( low fuel ) doesn't always read correctly. So you need to know how far you'll get before the pump stops pumping & how much gas is still left unused in your tank. It's a trial by error thing If you'd watched the video & read some comments you would already have this answer

    91 Ron is considered crap fuel in Australia, most Harley riders use 98 Ron, we have expensive fuel here compared to the USA , between $6 to $7 a gallon

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  7 лет назад +1

      91 octane is the best you can get now in Calif. I remember as a teen getting 110 octane to use on race day back when I drag raced. At $7= a gal I could barley afford to ride to work after taxes & all ROFL
      Don't you guys use imperial gals or liters which is more than US Gals? Plus got to consider the exchange rate between US dollars & what you have in Australia. What would that all work out too? More or less?

    • @DavidREllisAZ
      @DavidREllisAZ 7 лет назад +1

      Robert Robb a USA gallon is 4.2 litres We pay around here 91 Ron is $1.31 a litre, and 95 Ron is $1.50 to a $1.60, get into the outback at maybe 40c a litre, to see a big pickup like they drive in the USA is insane here, and so rare to see you stop and look, plus a Dodge Ram dual cab pickup here is about $150,000 so only the rich get them, I drive a ford falcon 2006 ute, bought it recent for $7000 with 160 kilometres, now you can look that stuff up mate, I used to live in El Centro Ca, my kids are still living in the USA, but that's another story, oh Aussie dollar is worth 76c USA , but most people here get min $20 HR, you would starve even on that here, bus drivers get $90,000 a yr.

    I have an 07 1200C. It has a 4.5 gallon tank and like clock work when 3 gallons are used the fuel light comes on. It drives me nuts that I have 1.5 gallons left. They should have made it come on when there is .75 gallons left.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 лет назад

      It all starts with the poor design of the in tank fuel pump & it's pick up location. If you run it too far after the light comes on and starve the pump it'll cause pre-mature failure of the pump from what I hear from those who've been riding the FI Sportsters for a few years & done just that. They should've designed an outside fuel pump IMHO

    my sportster custom gets about 100 miles to the fillup to .. petcock is up in the middle area of the new tear drop tank and the fill hole is down from the top so I can only fill it to there almost a gallon of empty space wish the fill cap was at the top of the tank..

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 лет назад

      Scott Wilson Isn't your Sportster the last year of carbed bikes? If so you've got more choices of tanks & locations of petcock than the newer Sportsters with FI. I get 40 mpg and 100 mi before I need to re-fill leaving almost 2 gals in the rear section un-used

    I wanted a side view of the sporty to see the lines of the bike. 4.5 just doesn't sound right on the 72. I have a 72 with 2.1 gallon and they look the best. Would maybe go to a 3.3 since they still look sweet and can go a bit farther.

    Damn!You should be getting a couple hundred miles out of that tank.I get 130 out of mine and it's a three gallon tank,but im also running a shorter fuel filter on the petcock too.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  10 лет назад +2

      yea I thought I'd get more than that also. With Harley's design of the fuel pump & filter inside the middle of the tank, ( it's about 6" tall x 4' long x 2" wide ? ) it takes up useable gas space. Plus it doesn't pick up the fuel behind the pump, ( almost half your tank capacity). You'd think they could make a smaller pump & filter system that'd work better. I guess the Sportster will never be for long trips, just commuting. At least I get an extra 40 miles distance over the smaller peanut tank. If it was an older model carbed bike I could just re-locate the petcock to the rear of the tank & get all but the last 1/2 gal. Oh well it is what it is I guess. Thanks for your comment

    • @ChadAndChill
      @ChadAndChill 10 лет назад +2

      Robert Robb That suck's man,Maybe you can find a shorter fuel filter some were to stretch the fuel mileage out a little more.Is the fuel filter part of the pump or separate? Loving the mods Robb the Sportster is looking good:)

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  10 лет назад +1

      The pump, fuel level sensor & filter are all together on one unit thou seperate items, if that makes any sense. It'd need a shorter pump with a pick up hose & sensor running to the rear of the tank to pick up more fuel & I don't think anyone makes. That I'm looking

    • @robertdanielrauch1517
      @robertdanielrauch1517 8 лет назад +1

      +Robert Robb making a pickup line wouldn't be difficult, just a hollow brass tube with holes drilled into it, measure the length from the fuel pickup to the rear of the tank, I'd have to see how you standard pick up is connected before i could tell you how to fit the extension, but it shouldn't be difficult

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 лет назад +1

      Robert Daniel Rauch I'm surprised no company has come out with a better designed internal pump since lots of owners are complaining about the same thing with the new FI internal fuel pumps. I heard of a guy who mounted a car fuel pump on the outside in place of the one inside but IDK if that's true or BS I'd think that'd be just as hard to do as trying to change the OEM pump inside. I hear other model FI Harleys have external pumps might be able to use one of them but for now I'll just have to fill up every 100 miles deffinetly something to think about in the future

    Don't you have a pretty high tank lift going on, while the fuel pump is basically at the front end of the tank? That itself would keep extra fuel from being reached right?
    "I dig your work by the way!" Wish I had your know how!

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  7 лет назад +1

      yes I do have a high tank lift & you're right it leaves 1/2 a tank of unusable gas in it because of the fuel pump pick up location. That's why I switched to the 4.5 gal tank over the 2.1 gal tank. I do get a little more range with it. I wish someone would design a better fuel pump pick up for inside the Sportster tanks.

    Where the pump is located, you lose a small amount of MPG with a tank lift.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  10 лет назад

      Depends on what you consider small amount. I've read in forums others getting to 140 mi. Before the idiot light comes on. I don't know how accurate or true that is or if they have a tank lift or not. But I'd hoped for better than what I'm getting I'm only getting 2.5 gals of use out of the 4.5 gal tank. To me that sucks! I could accept leaving 1 to 1/2 gal unused but not 2 gals. So I'm looking for another solution, maybe a different bigger tank or maybe a custom built with the pump further back? I don't know yet

    • @tiresomeaids
      @tiresomeaids 9 лет назад +1

      Robert Robb I know that I'm extremely late to this discussion, but I'm having the same issue with my Harley. I've got an 09 883 Custom, 4.5 gallon tank without a tank lift, everything stock except for slip on exhaust. I make it about 120-140 (depending on my riding) before my light comes on. The most I pushed it after the light came on was to 160, but I still had around a gallon and a half or more in the tank when I went to fuel up.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 лет назад +2

      it's all about the design & placement of the in tank fuel pump. If Harley made it smaller and placed it further back in the tank it'd pick up more gas inside & we'd have further distance. Anything you do to improve performance decreases MPG thus distance you can go before that damn light comes on. Thanks for joining the conversation

      I know what you mean I've got to stop about every 100>110 miles for gas so I have to plan rides around gas station locations, but that's pretty easy here as long as you don't go out of developed areas. You could swap for a tank off a Custom and get a little more distance but I don't know if it's worth the time & money for only a gallon more capacity The 72 was only a 2.1 gal tank so I doubled my capacity by going to the 4.5 gal tank. I don't know a whole lot about this stuff but what if there were a tube of some sort that could attach to the pump inside that lead to the back of the tank where the rest of the fuel were sitting? • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 лет назад

      that might work with one exception. The fuel pump uses being bathed in gas to keep it cool. If you continually run it past the idiot light coming on to where you're starving for fuel you'll burn out the pump motor faster than expected. I've heard they're only made to last 10 yrs under perfect conditions? I've known them to fail only after about 5 yrs :(

      no real problems with mounting the tank once I straightened out the bent rear mounting tabs on the tank. The issue with the gas is with the design of HD's internal fuel pump location & pick up Nothing I can do about it unless I re-design the location of the internal fuel pump pick up or figure out how to install an external fuel pump all of which seems like a pain in the but. So I only get to use 2.5 gals before the idiot light comes on. If I keep riding it'll starve the pump causing early failure

      yea I know you'd think it'd be cheaper with all the drilling rigs & refineries we've got in this county but they got us by the short hairs & wont let go. Here in Cali They jack the prices up come every Spring Break & they wont go down again until next Aug or Sept when the new school year starts. They claim it's the high cost of making the "Summer Blend" to please all the tree huggers Thanks for watching & commenting

      down here in La. they got more offshore drilling rigs in the gulf that you can shake a stick at and refineries all along the Ms. river.

      Mike BigEasyRider I know it's the same here. They've got pumping rigs sitting in the middle of residential areas. We've also got off shore rigs on the Calif coast & they're drilling more every day. With all that you'd think the prices would be lower. I was talking to an Oil exc from Texas a couple years back & he said that eventually we'll be paying the same prices as the rest of the world, like the UK $8= a gal! I think fuel theft will escalate if that happens. As it is now we've got guys going out to refineries & stealing hundreds of gals of gas at a time from tanker trucks & storage tanks. I wonder where will it all end?

      I think the only fix would be changing the FI to carbs or getting a different bike No body makes a better fuel pump system that I know of. Thanks for commenting
