A quick video I made explaining the basics of the art of soldering. This video is part 1 in a 2 part series explaining the basics and showing the method I use to join different diameter wires together. Some people might prefer to crimp in something like a butt connector, but I swear by solder and will avoid crimping whenever possible.

10,000 over produced crap videos on youtube, and here is this one, great job! Best explanation, simple, to the point, well executed, nothing fancy, no silly intros or loud music....Great video, wish more were like this.

The one understated point of this video is the clever way this guy holds his wires between his wire strippers and the pliers. Cheap simple effective bravo

Very good demo video. Been doing this for years, car stereos, led lighting, modded xbox and playstation consoles and controllers. Nobody showed me the right way to do it so I had to learn by trial and error. Wish I had this video YEARS ago.

One of best instructional/DIY videos I've ever seen. The detailed explanations about the tools and materials were concise (although i''ve seen it used countless times, and i had a rudimentary understanding of its applications, i never really new what flux did exactly) without the rambling, self-indulgent, drawn out, repetitive, self-explanatory time-waste that I am forced to sit through on all too many other vids. As a tribute, I will shut up and end the comment now with a simple "Thanks"

Check the NASA spec for soldering. 5 wraps for each wire then solder. Good for vehicles or high vibration areas.

Thanks a lot! I have been all over youtube and people bashing over and over.. from what I have learned (new at this) is that when you make the X with stranded wires, it is called a "Lineman Splice" and is used for stranded ONLY. What they say is doing this will weaken stranded thus not recommended. This seems to be the best way as you have shown us and I have a LOT to solder and will be using this method. Thanks a lot man! Great work!!!

Thanks, this video was very well done. I'm having better success now that I know to touch the solder to the point where the iron contacts the wire. Before, I was trying to hold it on the opposite side of the joint, hoping the heated wire would melt the solder itself. That was giving me burned looking joints, and melted insulation. Very good info.

This showed me exactly what I was doing wrong, and 15 minutes later I'm soldering together wires like a pro.
I think the key was pushing the loose ends together. Previously, I had been using the x-method shown, and I had three problems. First was the wires never seemed to heat up enough to take the solder, even though the insulation was practically melting off the wires. Secondly, I thought you weren't supposed to introduce the solder until it would melt upon touching the wire. Now I see to touch the solder to the tip and the wire at the same time to help with heat transfer, then switch to just soldering the wires by themselves without touching the tip. Thirdly, with the X-method the joint ends up being so large you have to use a bigger piece of heat shrink, which doesn't seal as well on the wires.
I'm in the process of soldering a wiring harness together, and as noted above, my technique has totally turned around. I just soldered about 8 joints together with significantly less heat than I was using before, and the joints look 100% better, and it took less time than I was taking to solder one joint.
    Thanks!

I like your video. Two things I like to do as a habit, 1>put the heatshrink on before removing the insulation. The bare wires can snag on the shrink and get bent which complicates the process, 2> I put silicone grease on the wire before shrinking the tubing. It keeps moisture out of the joint in the case it is an automotive wire. I particularly liked the use of the side cutter and stripper to hold the wires up and stable.

I needed this tutorial, best most thorough demo on RUclips which taught me a lot. I used it to solder very tiny wire and heat shrink it to give a nice clean finish with good conductivity. Revisiting old solder work which looked like your examples of how not to do it.
I also waterproofed it by adding Black Witch neoprene adhesive to the ends of the heat shrink.

After attempting to solder for the very first time a few days ago,I thought I did well, until I watched this,I didn't use flux I probably used the wrong solder wire, and never cleaned the gun tip, and mine look 5x as bad as his bad solders. Recently had a problem with electronics and I'm putting the blame on my bad solders. Pulling them now so I can redo them.
