According to google, the word is "palooka". Exact origin is unknown, but it was popularized by the "well-meaning but clumsy prize fighter" comic strip character Joe Palooka. It was mostly used by prize fighters and street toughs to call each other stupid. There doesn't appear to be any problematic history associated with it, but it certainly sounds like the kind of word that might ;p
Please take your time with this without worry. It's very rare to find a pair of players/youtubers perfect for the game. You're enjoying the game but also the voice acting, little insights and jokes. And being attentive to what the NPCs are going through. Bravo.
yessss (also carrie is right, some versions of vampire mythology say they can't cross running water. another lesser known bit of Lore is that you can stop them by spilling sand or seeds or w/e, because they will be compelled to stop and count every grain. there's some very fun vampire lore out there)
I've also seen references to vampire legends where they're basically just undead werewolves-ie, if you kill a werewolf, it'll rise the next dusk as a vampire. And of course, there are versions where werewolves and vampires are the same thing at least as late as Bram Stoker's Dracula. On a related note, happy undead Jesus day.
Fire destroys garlic on sight, proving that it dislikes garlic, has a destructive personality, burns during the day, dies when covered in holy water, craves attention, and is scenery chewing levels of melodramatic. Great Scott! Carrie may be onto something here. Fire is a vampire. Oh Buffy is not going to like this at all.
AAAAAAAH it's back! I'm so excited! I was hoping this would return when you guys finished Baba! A tip: Sunflower seeds are really useful to feed chickens-you plant them and they just give you more sunflower seeds. Technically you can also turn them into oil, as you have, but if you're worried about using up seeds that you want to grow for food, know that these work well instead. I think it's quartz that becomes silica? Been a while since I played this myself though. And of course, the return of Spiritfarer means the return of the Fish! counter (Though I have to admit it may be off by one-Carrie was talking reeeaaally fast.) New number is 231!
HECK YEAH, it’s back! And with new art to boot! I fell off of it pretty hard, since I was near the end of the game at the time and decided to wait for more content as well. 48:12 God, that tune both makes me happy, then shrivel and die from old age.
FWIW, one of the overlooked things included after you stopped playing is that you can now make another visitor's house like the one Stanley took over. I think you can even make multiples if you feel bad about people standing around not sharing the same couch.
I believe you can still only make the one guest house at a time, but you could always make a second one after Stanley claimed your old one. Pretty sure I spotted one on their boat.
I can tell you didn't watch the entire episode before posting that comment - they went on a bottle-opening spree as part of their quest to figure out how to get silica powder.
I called it! It's still not the Dan/Carrie Life Is Strange playthrough I've been hoping for, but that's always been a long shot. Anyway, thoughts from the video: Albert's boat upgrades have always been on the middle tab of the quest window, The change is that you can now add other upgrades to that tab - when using the blueprint station to check a building's requirements, there's a button you can press (shown at the bottom of the screen) to track that building's requirements in the same place as Albert's boat upgrades. Clearly you're the cosy reapers. The decision on what to tell Astrid at the end of the episode is the one thing that forces you to replay the game if you want 100% of the achievements - there's an achievement for each of the two answers, and you cannot get both on a single playthrough.
I almost never comment... but when Carrie started singing the cooking song from Azumanga Daioh I knew I had to! I've remembered that song for 15+ years now and spontaineously remember and sing it!
I haven't watched the episode, but I had to click on this video to see the thumbnail art full-size and come here to the comments to say 'wow'. Dan Jones, you've really outdone yourself again, your art's amazing, man 😃
I litterally just finished this game myself 2 days ago having picked it up to play it because of this lets play. it is so strange to now be knowing what to expect coming forward. I adore the voice you picked for Bev and I look forward to the charming and chill heartbreak to come.
3:45: I think vampires are one of those creatures that are an amalgamation of a bunch of similar myths and legends from a dozen cultures, each of which came with a single weirdly specific way to defeat it that had to be generalized to fit an entire pop folklore species rather than a specific story. 11:30: This must be so confusing for those people. This episode has been, like, seven minutes of call-backs and four minutes of out-of-context gameplay elements. 29:30: Stones and glass houses, but I don't think this is the kind of game you're expected to play efficiently. 50:40: That happens when you have long ziplines. And short ziplines are useless, so... 1:07:50: Something about this conversation between a rambling spirit and a Dan who she can't hear is hilarious. 2:10: Throw Mickey off the boat! Wait, I think Mickey is the bird, he'd just fly back. 5:45: Long-time PlayFriends will know that the secret to improv comedy is actually NO. 9:30: If you put the zipline ends on opposite corners of the boat, they're great for getting from one place to another quickly. But don't put too many or you'll find yourself accidentally ziplining surprisingly often. 27:10: Imagine if chickens came out differently depending on what the hens were fed while they were laying eggs. 35:05: There are plenty of other things you could call yourselves. Psychopomps, shinigami, deadbeats... 41:10: It would be funny if trying to feed Mickey and Bruce too many simple dishes in a row made them leave your boat in a huff. Less funny to hike across the map to pick 'em back up, though. 55:20: I know what you mean. A lot of charming old-timey words are born from the darkness lurking in the heart of old-timey...times. 1:02:20: ...I appreciate her...honest, I guess... 1:10:15: Best joke in the episode.
I'm so happy you two are back on this game. Its a wonderful chill while I've been working. But since its been so long, have you noticed the slow but persistent growth of flowering vines around Stella's house as you've progressed?
The discussion of the word palooka and early cartoon insults reminds me of the story of the word nimrod. A lot of people use the word nimrod as an insult to mean stupid because they heard Bugs Bunny call Elmer Fudd a nimrod. What they didn't know is that he was referring to a biblical hunter named Nimrod, and thus Bugs Bunny unintentionally created a new insult lol.
I was wondering if you would play something new or revisit this. I'm happy it's the latter. And the new thumbnail is REALLY GOOD! Also, yes Carrie, depending on the lore, vampires can't cross running water except maybe at sunrise and sunset. That actually becomes a plot point toward the end of Dracula.
19:52. RIGHT. this series! T H E. P U N S. >P. XD. 35:41, At least Dan is equally befuddled occasionally. (I got this one XD;;.) 1:08:20, that time passes in game, means this conversation is literally taking all day XD;;.
'Palooka' is indeed an insult. If my web search proves accurate... It's original meaning is something like 'mediocre boxer,' and morphed into meaning 'witless thug.' Seems its origins might be from a comic strip, where the main character, a boxer, was named Joe Palooka. I don't think it has any negative or derogatory meaning connected to it, beyond the comic strip character being seen as incompetent.

Definitely feels like The Count from Sesame Street is based on this part of the lore.
That's why you throw rice at weddings. It stops vampires following the happy couple to their new home.
And because so much of it contradicts so much else of it, there's jokes about it on the discworld, if you feel up to reading Lords and Ladies.
I'm so happy this playthrough is back! While I loved Baba, watching you two playing Spiritfarer is just so wholesome and relaxing :)
Whoa, i just finished watching Ep.22 less than 2 hours ago, thinking "it's a shame they never continued". The binge continues!
AAAAAAAH it's back! I'm so excited! I was hoping this would return when you guys finished Baba!

Thank you for your work on the Fish! count. Keep going good fellow.
Is that for the entire series, or just season 3 (starting this episode)?
@@timothymclean the whoooole thing
HECK YEAH, it’s back! And with new art to boot! I fell off of it pretty hard, since I was near the end of the game at the time and decided to wait for more content as well.

Carrie chose the absolute PERFECT voice for Bev. Well done as always.

Very happy this is back! One tip - you've got a lot of glim bottles in your inventory that you can open to get glims. It's free money!
Also free bottles, which might be more significant.
I can tell you didn't watch the entire episode before posting that comment - they went on a bottle-opening spree as part of their quest to figure out how to get silica powder.

Cake. For. You!
The fireworks sound how childhood fireworks sound, filtered through nostalgia goggles.

AMAZING THUMBNAIL!!!
This channel is getting me through my internship and finals crunch time.
FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSHHHHHHH! Glad to have this back again!
I’m so happy this is back this mad my day so much and the new art work is holesome as all heck
16:09 "they're the only ones who don't feel bullied."
What if they did? what if even THEY, the bully's in question, couldn't escape the bullying?
Oh no you forgot to leave Alice’s house on the ground floor. I know she’s gone but it’s so sad to move her house away from its appropriate place 😭

How appropriate the series comes back the day after I started a new playthrough myself. Been waiting for this!
5:50 I am here for any game that makes giggles like that :D
1:02:57 Yes! YES!
Now that you have Bounce you should check the lighthouse on the far left of the map.
You're not grim reapers...you're GLAM reapers!
Now there's an idea for a Calliope Mori stream...
Thanks for bringing this precious game back on the channel!
This is such a nice surprise! Glad to be back on The Ship of Feels 😭❤️
This game is a warm hug for the eyes
You make it sound nice, but the phrase "hug for the eyes" makes me wince and shield my face.
I have bad news for fire and boats: Salt water is still flammable.
So glad Spiritfarer is back! And the new thumbnails look amazing! Thanks Dan J!

Feel like I need to get Carrie the "We don't talk about bite club" shirt from LRR.
YEAAAAAH!!! This playthrough is what brought me to playframe! So glad that its back😆
So love seeing this back! I'm going to have to binge the earlier episodes, and my heart hurts just thinking about it, but it'll be worth it.

Since your last episode I got a new kitten. She likes responding to Daffodil's mewing
Ooooohhhhh, my gosh! Spiritfarer is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah! Carrie once more with the Azumanga Daioh! How do you know what lives in my brain?
I'M SO READY FOR THIS TO BE BACK
35:10 Glim Reapers?
Edit typoed the timestamp.
So happy to see this back I'm leaving a like and comment before I even watch it!
Actually I am badly allergic to clams, but can eat crayfish, shrimp and such no problem. It can happen :)
I don't know why you'd expect people allergic to one to be allergic to the other. Clams aren't shellfish; they're not even arthropods!
IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY, SPIRITFARER FUCK YEAH
i'm SO HAPPY THAT THIS IS BACKKK!!!!
Yes, yes, yes!!! I'm so happy this has returned!!
Oddly I remember exactly the same firework, it was ... like, a plastic bottle rocket, and it whistled as it went....
aaw HELL YEAH! I missed this Series SO much!
I'm so glad this is back!
YES YES YES That art is so precious!!!!
YAY! Spiritfarer is back!
OH!! YE TARNISH! YE--hold on, this isn't Elden Ring. Well geez.
THE SPEED AT WHICH I CLICKED ON THIS
Yay Spiritfarer’s back.
Was there any intent behind resurrecting the afterlife game on Easter or was that just a happy accident? 😊
I have missed this SO much
Thank goodness!
I've been waiting for this!
19:52. RIGHT. this series! T H E. P U N S. >P. XD.
35:41, At least Dan is equally befuddled occasionally. (I got this one XD;;.)
1:08:20, that time passes in game, means this conversation is literally taking all day XD;;.
Interesting to see what will happen with the new path setting tools that Atul would have added to your map
Bell cat returns!!!
Yeeees!! So glad you to are back in what I consider to be one of the greatest games if all time :D

It Has RETURNED!!!😄😄😄
YES!!!!!
FEEEEEEEEEEESH!!!11!

Between last episode and this one, my dad died. Maybe you gave him a lift off air. Death is a weird thing to wrap your head around.
it is BACK
YES!
Yeeeeeessssss. It's back!
HELL YEAH!
YES!!
Why am I just *now* seeing that this series is back? Curse you RUclips Algorithm!
Happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy joy^^
The struggle! I so want to watch this, but I also haven't played with the newest update yet!
Finalmente! ✨👍🏻✨
May I suggest "glib reaper"
I recommend Nichijou if you enjoyed Azumanga Daioh. It gets a bit wilder but I feel has the same DNA
I love how Dan says "There won't be any birds here" about Oxbury. Bev is a owl.
BITE CLUB!
Vampires and some spirits/fey in some lore are weak to or even unable to cross flowing water. dunno why really.
I resent Dan's choice of voice for Giovanni :P that smarmalot not deserve such gruff sexy voice xD
dount stop playing thes game is touk so long pls
Yay! You're back!
