- After being selected first overall in the 2000 NHL entry draft, Rick DiPietro went on to experience all the huge highs and crushing lows that most professional athletes endure. However, he disappeared from the hockey world midway through the 13/14 season. So the question remains: whatever happened to Rick DiPietro? Watch to find out!

Worst contract ever. He's still getting paid 1.5M by the Islanders until 2029.
Yeah lol. He's getting paid a similar amount to a goalie who played a full career and was a pretty good decent nhl goalie for most of their career.
camelCase mike milbury
The Islanders some years have used that to make the floor though.
good for him
Makes us canucks fans feel a little better having to pay Luongo 1.5 million dollar cap hit for 3 years post retirement
I can't imagine being Rick. Losing your dream career where you are playing super well over injuries...
Captain Limabean at least his son is doing good
Daber Memelord Michael and Rick DiPietro aren’t related....
He wasn’t playing super well tho, he struggled to go a season with a save percentage over .900
I wish I was him. He's getting paid until 2029
He was crap had like 1 good season
Rick dipietro start a new job at 98.7 espn radio... and was on injury reserved 5 days after
hahahahaha
Maybe he can have a more successful career on the radio then a hockey goalie
This guy's the only British person I know that likes hockey
Hockey is English. Canadians didnt invent it.
@@Fausto_4841 source?
Belial61 are your parents related?
I know three
His accent sounds mad fake tbh.
He was reincarnated as Michael DiPietro
Charlie Peppinck well Rick was an NHL player Michael isn’t ;)
spow I think I was being obvious, don’t make me do it...
Pauli Nieminen He's still in junior. Hasn't even had the chance to play in American League yet.
Pauli Nieminen not yet
No no no. Dont put that curse on my canucks
DiPietro played in the NHL. Became a millionaire. Has a great job now. Sounds like a success to me. Although, as an Islander fan, his NHL career was a disappointment. However, as I am also a Met & Jet (FB) fan, I have learned to still embrace hope and dismiss the (numerous) fails. It makes the rare successes so much sweeter! Good video, thanks.
To be fair though, the Islanders were a gutter team and Rick gave them a star face on a team of losers. Cant really base Rick's record on it being his fault as he cant score goals, play defense or check guys into boards all on his own.
He can still fight though lmao
He’s a bust but not his fault injuries screwed him over
And his cocky attitude, until Johnson knocked him the fuck out.
So he’s not a bust. Injuries are things you can’t control.
He would have been good if it wasn't for all those injuries.
LiveGoalie #31 He lacked size on top of the injuries. He was destined to fail.
@@undiscloseddesires6816 Yeah Dominik Hasek never amounted to anything...
And if he had a vagina he'd be a woman. So fucking what.
He had a .900 save percentage and a 3.02 g.a.a. the year before they offered him that contract. His best season was a .911 save percentage and 2.36 g.a.a. before the 2004-2005 lockout. The guy was shit.
Jarrad Bruessel bc he was on a Mike Milbury created team lol.
imagine if they kept Luongo😮
Grew up with Rick in Mass, he played on my older brothers team. I was a goalie and remember him being awesome back then. When he went first overall it was crazy, everybody was so excited. Sad to see the injuries pile up and ruin him. So happy he got that radio job, wish him the best.
He was nasty in net growing up probably the best puck handling goalie I've ever seen. I was on the team with him and your brother my brother was on the same team as his brother Alex
@@atex6175 I also remember his mom having these crazy long finger nails. I'm pretty sure it was his mom, they used to freak me out as a kid.
@@atex6175 i could be wrong, it was a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure that was his mom.
@@Rmunkay lmao yeah buddy but it was the 80s/90s lots of crazy fashion back then.
@@atex6175 my bro was on his team for awhile, then I think later his team goalie was Jaffrey or Joffrey or something.
Good video Man lmao keep it up dude
Thanks man, much appreciated :)
DiPietro was starting to come into his own the few years following up to the injuries, I don't think he would've been a superstar goalie but if it weren't for the injuries and all the things coming with being developed by the Milbury Islanders he would've been a very good above average goalie, similar to how Fleury (another 1st overall) turned out. Not necessarily going to put up outstanding numbers or contend for the vezina every year, but someone that wouldve been a very solid reliable goalie year after year
Great void dude keep it up
Quality video OMR!
I was near the coliseum for that draft, when I heard he traded Luongo AND Jokinen for Kvasha and Parrish so he could open room to draft this kid I was livid.
It’s still ticks me off.
Rick DiPietro. The glass goalie. Still being paid by the Islanders.
I didn't know they gave up Luongo for DiPietro...!
Not only that we could of drafted Danny heatley first overall. Milbury was the worst
@@bb-gc2tx Yea, Islanders first traded Zigmund Palffy for young Olli Jokinen and then later traded Olli Jokinen and Luongo to Florida for Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish... And also they traded Chara and 1. rounder to Senators for Alexei Jashin. And if that was not bad enough, Senators took Jason Spezza with that pick.
I really don’t blame him, the islanders fucked up his development so bad, should’ve let him develop for at least 3 years, he was 18, goalies never develop till there atleast 22
In Defense of Rick DiPietro and The New York Islanders, in 2006-7, The Buffalo Sabres Were A Great Team and The Islanders Were Still Trying To Figure It Out
As a islander fan. He wasn't a bad goalie he was actually pretty good but injury held home back so they brought home put of a contract. Btw thanks for thevid
Poor Rick, could've been decent if he stayed healthy. Anyways you could do whatever happened to Scott Gomez in the future
Don't worry dude, he's on the list :D
Whatever happened to Jim Carey
When you look at Vezina winners in the 1990s, you see Hasek a lot...then Jim Carey sticks out like a sore thumb!
Rick DiPietro - The Glass Goalie.
If the wind blows too hard, he gets some sort of injury.
“I was born with glass bones and paper skin. Every morning I break my legs, and every afternoon I break my arms. At night, I lie awake in agony until my heart attacks put me to sleep.”
In fairness, Roberto Luongo struggled mightily with the Islanders. It would not be until after being traded (along with Olli Jokinen) to Florida that he shined. Of course, Roberto Luongo ended up being the third goalie to play 1,000. NHL games.
I got a figure of Chis Odgood .. It must have stayed packaged for 12 years maybe more .. I LOVE it !!! GO ISLANDERS .
At the moment he is my coach at my prep school
Actual game clips would make these videos much better
Do one on Dwayne Roloson
They pay him every year around 2 million because of the buyout until either later 2020’s or early 2030’s kind of like Bobby Bonilla’s situation with another orange and blue New York team, the New York Mets
13-15-1 doesn’t add up to 20 games? So glad to finally see another Brit who loves hockey
Elliot Rook means he played half a game n the score was (example) 3-1 n he only let in one goal so the other goalie got the credit for a loss similar to baseball rules with pitching
ChevyHead right okay, thank you!
I don't get the 15 year contract. I feel like it was just because he was a first overall pick. He never put up good numbers his whole career
Mike Milburry wasn’t exactly a very competent GM
Snow was the one who gave him the contract.
ok im a senators fan so when i heard 2:47 i was liike.. uh... LETS GOOOOOOOO! to bad the sens are bad now tho :(
To make the video sound better, speed it up to 1.25x
Despite how horrible it went for him on the island, he still claims to be an Islander fan.
To be fair, 2000-01 Islanders were a pretty bad team. When your leading goal scorer is Czerkawski and there is almost a 20 point gap to the next player, massive sign something is wrong. All the goalies who played significant time for the Islanders that season had a 3+ GAA. I mean, there was a reason Islanders got the 1st round pick the previous season. Same as the season before.
Sometimes context is more important than just the numbers.
Take Jimmy Howard this season. It is one of his worst seasons in terms of GAA, but its probably the best hockey he has played during his career. Its the team in front of him which is rubbish tanking his numbers.
Good point hey do you play fantasy sports? I need a draft Kings buddy.
This shows the NHL that no team should ever pick a goalie first in the draft and pay him a long term contract for a huge sum. Price has proven this although Price had 2.5 seasons where he excelled out of a 14 year career. Those GM decisions should have been enough those men from ever being in the NHL again
He play in 2004-2005 for the scrissersee in germany
Hard to blame the man for being drafted too early, injuries and signing a 35 million dollar contract.
I'd sign that contract too! Pretty sure all of us would.
Whatever happened to Robot Jones?
What... I remembered the crazy DiPietro contract.... but they traded LUONGO!!! for their rookie goalie that hasn't played a game yet in the NHL. Even with all the hopes surrounding Carey Price, the Canadiens didn't do something as stupid!
Whatever happened with Jordin TooToo
retired now I think
He explains it on Spittin Chiclets
The 15 year contract?
You could be a pretty serious mongolian throat singer with that intro
Whatever happened to Jonathan Chechoo
He's on the list, so keep an eye out! :D
went to play outside of north america, might be still there playing
falerdog I know his father a bit he is no longer playing overseas he is now coaching in the KHL a team out of Slovakia
do one about Ed Belfour
Making whiskey lol
I liked his "peripheral" activities with pro wrestling.
Glass man
4:57 hey that’s my dad in the left
Major League Baseball has Bobby Bonilla day
National Hockey League has Rick Dipietro day.
BOTH represent NEW YORKS red headed step child's 2nd rate team in those sports
New York Highlanders?
Poor guy.
If I were DiPietro I couldn't be more than happy when still getting payed by millions a year without doing anything.
Maybe he would've been a great goalie if not for all those injuries. Kinda feel bad for the guy
My god even in practices he will still mange to get injured, .
Zack Steele you realize that practice is still playing hockey, right? You have to play as hard in practice as you do in a game. Seriously dude, before you get on his case maybe learn what it takes to be a goalie.
Kari Lehtonen WATN?
This guy was a disaster of a goalie, I dont know why they gave him a 15 year contract
Well, we are talking about Mike Milbury
Snow gave him the contract.
He played for my local 2nd Division Team in the Lockout Year! SC Riessersee Garmisch Partenkirchen Germany :D But he was kinda shit
Feel bad for him. He suppose to be the next grant fuhr .
He went to team canada
GoPro Action it was a joke 😆
Looking at the rosters of some of those Islander teams, his poor numbers are likely the result of having really bad teams in front of him. Take for example the 2007-8 team. They were 2nd worst team in GF in the entire league, having 1 goal more than Columbus.
Henrik Lundqvist should’ve been the one in that 2008 all-star game, instead of Rick DiPietro.
Homie got injured in the all star game like how
you literally made me leave before you finished the first sentence lol jeez dude ever heard the phrase "over the top"
Mike Milbury best GM ever.
Said no one ever.
I think he would've been a great goalie if he wasn't injured all the time.
The greatest bust still plaguing the islanders cap to this day
He actually doesnt count against the cap because of the compliance buyout granted to every team after the lockout
He plays in a men’s league on Long Island against benders
I played minor pro and I would see guys fake injuries just to get paid and didn't have to play
impossible to live up to that contract no matter how good you play .... they set him up for failure as much as anything .
Man absolutely finessed the islanders
The islanders finessed the islanders lol what a dumb contract
New York Radio
Took a Left from Brent Johnson
Mike Millbury is the worst thing that ever happened to the Islanders. Thank Someone for Lou and Trotz. I have hope in my team for the first time in 25 years
Islanders fans must feel their blood boiling every time they hear the names DiPietro or Millbury lol, and I suppose you could say Tavares as well now (no offense islander fans)
@Justin Time You can say that again
Tavares never failed the islanders, they failed him. Surrounding him with the cheapest players they could buy. Never maxing out their salary cap or even coming close. A ton of players just refusing to go to that organization just because of how poor it's ran. Yeah i'd say you are wrong on Tavares.
@@sneakyvee Garth Snow failed the Islanders so the owners fired him and weight. Lou and Trotz did what they could to get JT back, but he wanted to go home. The Islanders are doing fine without him sitting first in the metro and second in the east. It's the way he left is what gets us Isles fans in a tizzy. Saying things like "I couldn't imagine playing anywhere else" and then once July 1st hit BOOM! off to TOR he went.
talk about investing in a lemon, wow RIP islanders.
Dipi-a-tro
Yeah, he had no luck. Wish I could get paid 4.5 mil for 15 years of below average work. Poor bastard.
Is this even a question?
In 5 games in the first round
Never knew he was that oft injured. The guy was a human pincushion.
No wonder Islanders never wins the Stanley if they make so many errors like this video shows..
my two time eskimo brother rick dipietro 🤣
He bought an island in the Caribbean after ripping off the islanders and the NHL
He retired from life and still makes a clean million a year. Done.
Man... and red wings fans think howard is injury prone and sucks...
This goalie was a joke. Because of him, at one time the team had 4 goalies, 1 starting goalie, and 3 back up goalies
Man the islanders are not good draft 1st overall are they?
Injuries
The guy must be made out of glass or something
Wow his career went like Mediocre to worse
Made out like a bandit.
"What happened to Rick DiPietro?" -> without even watching this content, I will tell you what happened to Rick. He sucked! He made million of dollars being a bench warmer... That is what happened.
And before someone says "he was injured a lot" yeah by doing things like trying to fight a man 2 times his size. #Stupid
@@PRYVTgomerPYLE #pussy
First
He was in bed with Snow
Future Hall of Famer Roberto Luongo? lol
myhybrid09 he will be
Look at the all time goalie stats
Luongo is a legit goalie he’s underrated as literally one of the best he just gets shit on by the media all the time. He’s for sure going to finish #3 in all time wins so long as he gets 5 more wins...
Do whatever happened to mike Richards
Don't worry, he's on the list :D
Total bust......waste of a draft pick and Isles cash
I remember laughing my ass off when he got knocked out in that goalie fight he can't stay healthy man alive.
Looked like he was overweight and not in shape....probbably lazy work ethic
Worst fake accent ever!
Ergh, tell me about it!
