The Rockville Brass Band performs Connotations, composed by Edward Gregson. The Rockville Brass Band performed under the baton of Rachel Zephir on June 16, 2024, at the Parilla Performing Arts Center in Rockville, MD. Connotations is written expressly for brass band, and more specifically for competitions between bands. Thus, it is not an arrangement of a piece written for other instrumentation. Edward Gregson highlights each section of the band through 9 variations on the same musical theme. Percussion shines as the melody moves through the brass. This piece was premiered at Royal Albert Hall as the Championship section test piece for the 1977 British National Brass Band Championships.
