im a 17 year old art student, and id like to say a big thanks, your videos are amazing and have been so informative and helpful in improving my own artistic abilities and handwriting.
That is amazing. I actually have some of those drafting liners you used. And I have a set of drafting tools from my grandfather in a set he had. Thanks for this. Very inspiring.
I LOVE CALLIGRAPHY. I NEVER GET TIRED . WATCHING OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK WITH A SPLASH HERE AND SOME INK THERE, WORTH A MILLION BUCKS 4 ME. CONGRATULACIONES MAESTRO!
If I may say so, this is a very simplistic approach to 'modern calligraphy'. As I understand this, contemporary calligraphy encompasses a lot more than this cheap trick.
WOW! I love the freedom and expertise of your work. The homemade ruling pen looks like it's made of soda can metal folded. How do you hold the sides together?
"..Don't ask somebody under the age of twenty what this is; They'll be never able to tell you." nice one :) Great series of videos by the way. Keep up the good work!
steve jobs kind of took hand calligraphy during his college years and now im trying to learn this. im only 14 but i already have interest in things like this :)
haha he is actually one of the best calligraphers. He does the invitations to the BAFTAs. He can do any scribe style and is the best instructor. Watch some of his other videos. This one was a bit weird because it's not formal calligraphy
I am very impressed with your calligraphy. The pen you used towards the end of your video, did you make it yourself? I do bookbinding as a hobby and would love to learn calligraphy. Do you every use a goose quill? and last question: Is that a lovely Welsh accent I hear?
Bit late to reply, but while I'm not sure about the ink side of things, it could also be your paper. You can get paper that has a hydrophobic layer on it that lets the ink sit and dry on the surface, rather than soaking into the paper. I'm sure there are other types as well, more suited for calligraphy, but look for Clairefontaine, Lechturn, Rhodia and other high quality paper (if you use fountain pens in daily life, you'll know this paper is amazing). You can buy dotted, grid squared, lined or even blank for sketching. Though I think the dots are the best for practising writing, since the dots are light and non-intrusive, yet they provide adequate guidance when trying to make sure your letters are all the same size.
+TheMrFloorball looks like its just some really hard paper from a magazine or something folded over one of those sticks that the dr shoves down your throat
I'm 32 and I didn't learn how to use a ruling pen until I was 18, in an intro to design class in college. Are you sure your curriculum isn't unique? I frequently use a ruling pen to draw with, often in public, in NYC, and nobody ever seems to know what it is.
I believe that people, who calls they painting "modern calligraphy" are understand, that they paining has nothing similar to calligraphy, but they want it to be "calligraphy", so they call it "modern calligraphy".
I always thought of modern calligraphy as something more like The Oscar Font at scribblesandswirls (RUclips won't let me post the link). Chic, organic. If this isn't modern calligraphy, what is it? I don't know what to google and I'd like to learn this. :)
Well i am fourteen in the US not Europe and I use a ruling pen everyday because I am in calculus trigonometry. Just about any 8th grade geometry teacher has kids use them.
It's sort of like those video's that tell you that you can learn dancing in 5 or 6 lessons. The control of the pen takes hours and hours, if not weeks and months of practice to learn. You write an 'a' and keep copying it till its perfect. Maybe 20 pages of 'a'. . . .then you start on 'b'. . . .only another 24 letters to go. Once you've done that might be ready to start on words. . . . . . The idea's in the video are great, but it skips over the basic skills.
Watching this is balm to your soul. And the music with the calm voice of his just adds up to the warm nature of the whole video.

How do you prevent your ink from being runny. all the ink i have like attacks the paper once the nib comes in contact with the sheet...

+TheMrFloorball looks like its just some really hard paper from a magazine or something folded over one of those sticks that the dr shoves down your throat
+TheMrFloorball Google "Cola Pen". Made from a thin-walled can, like Coca Cola.

cool... but i consider this more of traditional style calligraphy. from what I've seen, traditional calligraphy is just using a braun tip nib.

I want the title "Master Scribe"!
It's the Contrast
Trini!!! :)
