As a 54 yr. old black man I had to see what these young people thought about this tune. I believe it was released in like 81 and remixed and re-released in 87. I still enjoy listening to it and the Chaka Khan duo “Higher Love”. Glad I came across this. 👍🏿
Winwood started very young (fifteen) and sang back up to some of the greatest R&B masters (as I am sure you know). He got his R&B roots early and they are deep.
This man is a legend of Rock/Blues music. Started at age 17 in London England. Has one of the most soulful voices of anyone in the business over the last 50 plus years. "Spencer Davis Group," then his next Band "Traffic," and countless songs as a solo artist. An icon in the true sense of the word. Thanks
Brad & Lex, you’ll love his “Roll With It”, “Back In The High Life Again” and “The Finer Things”!!!! Steve plays great keyboards!! You heard him 3 months ago in the The Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin' reaction. Your welcome for reminding you of the Higher Love video with Chaka Kahn.
The song is about someone he really knew who was about to get really popular, then she got hooked on heroine. "She can't be that warm with the wind in her arms". The duo Lex was trying to remember was Steve and Chaka Khan, the song was Higher Love.
Her name is Valerie Carter who was also the object of Jackson Browne’s song That Girl Could Sing.” Check out her version of “Ohh Child,” both studio and live versions. Her voice soars effortlessly.
My favorite artist and I love his Traffic years the best too. Empty Pages, Glad, Many A Mile To Freedom, Rainmaker, 40 Thousand Headmen, Heaven Is In Your Mind, Light Up Or Leave Me Alone, Medicated Goo, Freedom Rider....so much really great music
YOU MUST LISTEN to him singing "I'm a Man" when he was like 17. The live version on Dutch TV or something, in black and white. They did a few songs for that set, but yeah... INCREDIBLE. MIND BLOWING. GUARANTEED.
The only version on Dutch tv on RUclips I could find is ruclips.net/video/V06cIzGodkQ/видео.html. there’s a life version on Finnish television: ruclips.net/video/jLaPO79hrM0/видео.html And German television: ruclips.net/video/SQUEnALTXfA/видео.html
Steve Winwood is one of the most talented dudes ever - you've reacted to him singing in groups too. Like The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith and Traffic.
Hi Lex, the song you're thinking of is Higher Love which has Chaka Khan in it too. Both of these songs are fantastic. I especially love his stuff from the mid-60s when he was in the Spencer Davis Group xxx
Steve was a child prodigy. At 15 he made some great music with the Spencer Davis Group. Later with the highly underrated Traffic . His solo career was fantastic .
Steve winwood joined "the Spencer Davis group" when he was 14 check out there hit " gimmie some lovin " think he was about 16 when he sang lead vocals on it ....super talented guy and an incredible voice :)
"Higher Love", with Chaka Khan, is the song. Steve was also in the groups "Traffic" and "The Spencer Davis Group" before his very successful solo career.
It's amazing to hear how his musical style changed over the 20 years previous to this track. From his teen years as vocalist in The Spencer Davis Group with incredible hits like "I'm a Man", "Gimme Some Lovin'". To his 70s band called Traffic and a stand out song called "Dear Mr Fantasy", and another Traffic song called "Hole in My Shoe". All so so different to this.
Perhaps as notably, Blind Faith, where he gained a lot his initial popularity in the US playing with Eric Clapton, at least with all the FM radio stations playing their songs! The Spencer Davis Group had some really good songs, in particular the one you listed, but none of us really knew who he was at that time. I was only 11-12 when they came out, but we were all in awe over Blind Faith a couple years later around “68 or “69. Have a great day Elizabeth!
@@lantose He was never in Cream… He was in Traffic and when Cream ended he and Clapton formed Blind Faith for one album, with Ginger Baker on drums and Ric Grech on bass..
@@vrvaughn Thanks! My bad, got them mixed up, so I’ll have to edit that! I bought the cream live concert, I think 2005 at Royal Albert Hall which is great!
Steve Winwood has one of the best voices ever. His work with Traffic is legendary. Suggested listening to The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, a rock classic. Also Glad/Freedom Rider, Empty Pages, Shootout at the Fantasy Factory, 40,000 Headmen, I can go on and on. As far as solo work, Roll With It, Arc of a Diver, While You See a Chance, Talking Back to the Night. Again, I can go on and on. The man is incredible!
Steve Winwood was in a band called Blind Faith along with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. Their best song is Can’t Find My Way Home. You should give it a listen for a completely different vibe. Soooo good!
Steve Winwood is one of those guys that is known for these 80's tunes more than the lonnnnnnng career of being a killer musician he actually has. Dude has had that voice since he was a child (not even exaggerating)
Eric contacted Steve about "Call Me', and Steve offered to redo the vocals for the faster pace of Eric's version. He's amazing. The whole comment section on the RUclips video of Valerie is young people saying, "OMG, this is Call Me!'...hahaha.
Steve Winwood has been playing professional great music since he was a teenager. He's as great a piano player as he is a guitar player as he is a singer. Such a talented man. He gave Eric Clapton a run for his money on a recent tour together
I’ve seen him a few times with his group Traffic . A true superstar singer, keys, guitar, writer, and world treasure. His “Higher Love” featuring Chaka Kahn is soulful, rock, pop FIRE.
Steve was great in Traffic, Blind Faith and the Spencer Davis Group. A solo favorite of mine is Arc of a Diver. It has a real chill vibe to it, one of those that sucks you in soon as you hear it.
Man I was in grade school and I'd come home and see this video and fell in love with the song - the melody really got me. It was different in those days. You couldn't just pull it up on RUclips and watch it anytime, you had to wait until they played it again and you had no idea when that would be.
Wind machines were big in music videos back then. Higher Love (with Chaka Khan, not Tina Turner) is probably my favorite of that era. I really like a lot of the 60s and 70s stuff with The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic (Dear Mr. Fantasy is one of the coolest songs ever imo) and Blind Faith.
Steve Winwood is a rock great. Did some fantastic work with Traffic back in the 60's. Dear Mr Fantasy, The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, and one that made an impression on me back in 66/67 when I was 8, namely Hole in my Shoe. Such an unusual but captivating song because of that.
You were thinking of "Higher Love" with Chaka Kahn, I think. Steve Winwood started with the Spencer Davis Group at age 15 - his voice was notable from the very start!
I remember back in '84-'86 I worked at Dairy Queen and this was on a tape that played on a continuous loop all day long. I wonder how many times I've heard this?
A very great voice, as always. Also a memorable one for many reasons given that Steve Winwood was in Traffic, The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Ginger Baker's Air Force, Eric Clapton and the Powerhouse and his solo career.
Steve was a teen “phenom” when he joined the Spencer Davis Group in the late 60’s. Played multiple instruments and carried a most unique voice. Blind Faith with Clapton created some really great songs. But his 80’s breakout album, “Back In The High Life” is a great album, worthy of a start to finish listen. Regards 🤘😎
Lex is right - his voice is very distinct. You should definitely check out his other solo work, but also his early work with The Spencer Davis Group whose 1960s hits were superb with him as their lead singer. Their first hit was "Keep on Running" and it's a real banger - Steve was I think 16 or 17 when that was recorded in 1965. A very talented and unique guy.
Steve Winwood is a bona fide musical genius This was during his highly successful solo career during the 80's, but my favorite era are his earlier days. From a teenage prodigy with the Spencer Davis Group ("Gimmie Some Lovin' " - when he drew huge crowds in the London clubs and was hailed as the white Ray Charles) to his formation of his incredible band Traffic, and then the supergroup Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker)
Steve is a legend. He started as the teenager with the amazing voice in Spencer Davis Group in the 60s, from there to Traffic and Blind Faith before going solo. Multi-instrumentalist and great singer. You should try "While You See a Chance" and "Arc of a Diver" (SW solo), "Dear Mr Fantasy" (with Traffic), "Can't Find My Way Home" (Blind Faith) and "Gimme Some Loving" (Spencer Davis Group). While You See A Chance is a good Winwood Song. Winwood has been around since he was 17 and singing with The Spencer Davis Group. They had a hit called Gimme Good Lovin

You HAVE to do "Call on me" by Eric Prydz now! Steve actually re-recorded his vocals for that song. Plus, you'll love the music video. One of the best ever made lol
"Higher Love"(with Chaka Khan) is the other Steve Winwood song. Some others: ("Valerie")...."Roll With It"...."While You See a Chance"..."Don't You Know What the Night Can Do?"...."Spanish Dancer"...."The Finer Things"...."Night Train"...."Holding On"...."Arc Of a Diver"....(more)
They also remade this into a sorta techno pop song later in the years and used his chorus on it... forgot what it was called but believe its called Call On Me
You should check out Eric Prydz’ song ‘Call On Me’ that samples the ‘Call on Me’ hook from Steve Winwood’s ‘Valerie.’ My guess is that Brad will be a huge fan of the music video.
Steve Winwood is probably one of the greatest rock singers and instrumentalists of our time. Unlimited talent. Best tune by him for me is John Barleycorn must die. Old folk tune he covered with Traffic .
Memorable is a great description of his voice. Once you hear it, you know it. Great ending as well. Brad: "No". Lex: "Really?" Brad: "No." Good laugh! 😂♥
My favorite Steve Winwood song is his solo version of John Barleycorn. The Traffic version is great, but his solo acoustic version is just wonderful. With all his incredible abilities, I forgot he was a master on the guitar too.
I think you were thinking of the song "Higher Love" with Chaka Kahn. Little Stevie Winwood goes way back. Check out "I'm a Man", "Gimme Some Lovin", "Dear Mr. Fantasy" , "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" when he was with Traffic
It's definitely his voice for me too Lex. Steve's music is always a welcome listen. Please react to Steve Winwood - "Back in the High Life Again." It's my favourite and I think y'all would dig it.
Saw Steve with the Powder Blues band in 80 at the Cave in Vancouver, B.C. they did a ripping song together called Hear That Guitar Ring, fun times (we got kicked out!)
