- If you have a WD MyCloud or MyBook Live NAS, you can connect to it via FTP to transfer files much faster than the normal Windows Explorer network transfer.

Yes, so slow and unreliable. When deleting photos, will go done to 0 items/s, i.e. delete 1 photo every 15 seconds.
For Dropbox-like feature, IS there a diferença between WD, qnap os synology?
can you also do this with the mycloud home? there is no network settings for me.

Not that it matters but my Filezilla was crapping out the same way . I ended up connecting an external USB to the Mycloud box and drag and dropping that way.

hi, I've got a horrible transfer rate with my WD MyCloud 4T, it's maximum around 11MB/s and all parts of my Network have Gbit/s rates. Win10-Comp with 1G Ethernet - 1GBit Switch - and then direct to MyCloud. Now I enabled FTP on myCloud, installed a FTP-Client (FileZilla) and there is absolutely no improvement in speed. For a file with 1,5MB it takes 2min40sec - horrible. What's wrong?
I've just come across this video, after trying again to make use of my WD MyCloud drive. This was so easy to do and has made copying 2 TB data to my drive easy, relatively quick and so far reliable, not dropping the connection once. It's made by drive usable once more, so thanks.
Man you will have to make this tutorial again. Because WD my cloud got an update, and its a pain in the ass to setup ftp without seeing all kinds of scary warnings like " if you fuck up you wont be able to acces your hard drive " n shit.
this may seem stupid.. but why cant I see "storage" on my wd homecloud?? all I can see is. computer, media device, network insfracture, and other device.. and does this also read faster aswell like watching a video / a movie through it?? TIA

Using file explorer, it is fast to copy the files to myCloud NAS, but very slow to open or download the files from myCloud using file explorer. download speed from internet is good
any idea why file explorer is very slow to open, download or play the files?
WOW thats a nice one. Windows upload works for me with 10-15Mb/s, but with this trick it really goes up to the full driver speed. I used this driver since 5 years and it was always dissapointing. Thanks sir!

i can do this with mybookliveduo, but it doesnt work with mycloudex2. is there a different process?
Good info and even used it to transfer about 500gb of music. However, Not having much luck finding out how to make it "scan" the shared folder faster. The Ultra drive with it's 2 drives is faster but still takes longer then the 1000 folders of movies on the same drive. Takes seconds vs minutes. Any idea how to spread that up? I tried turning off media serving, turned it back on. One 4 tb drive, updated, etc. never finishes scan. I've removed all the album art, just MP3's, ACC's and FLAC files remain. Was hoping to dedicate one of two 4tb drives to music. Trying the 12tb system is no different. My 16tb Netgear NAS104 blows them all away. Not happy at all about performance when it comes to music.
Is there a trick to speed up FTP over internet, it so damn slow. While regular FTP is much faster?

I thought you had to do port forwarding. All I wanted to do was access the drive when on vacation to send my pics home. Was I wrong about the port forwarding or is this all there is ?

I just wanted to say a big thanks for posting this video. I've had my Gen 1 My Cloud Mirror since it first came out and I WISH I knew about this tip back then. Oh well, better late than never. :) I have just transferred a file in 50 minutes as opposed to over 5 hours!
Thank you - thank you and thank you - cannot say it enough your video and details was spot on. Transferred / made a backup copy of all my data 1.7TB from the now legacy My Cloud running OS 3 to a 4Tb usb flash drive connected via USB C. Transfer speed increased 10X by using FTP (was seeing 5 MiB/s) actual transfer when using FTP = 45 - 95 MiB/s - most times two threads being copied at same time each getting about 28-45 MiB/s). If used windows copy would have taken 25 days - instead took about 2 hrs (i started with select folders and went and did other tasks then came back and copied some more)! Awesome advice - thanks again.
I wanted to say thank you I use this method on my WD Cloud ex4100 and it was a lot easier to handle big files when Windows was capping out at 30 MB. Thank you much.!
Still using my OS3 since I was previously too broke to upgrade, getting a new non cloud device next week. In the meantime, DUDE, you saved my bacon!!! I cannot thank you enough! Hi, I have similar issue.
File transfer to the mapped network drive is very slow and can stuck.
FTP works much better.
Changing the IP to Static IP is NOT needed.
This did not work for me. Got into filezilla and entered what I needed and said success but none of my WD cloud files showed up. What's up? Thanks. Setup the WD on FTP and went through it all but no idea now.
This is STILL a good trick for WD My Book Live & Cloud device users. Using Linux Mint 21 and the Nemo file manager on my Laptop over 5 GHz WiFi, I get around 8 MB/s using SMB, 15-16 MB/s using AFP, and 28-29 MB/s using FTP! Since I use a lot of large (30-50 GB) video files, this is still slow but makes a considerable difference.
Not a secured way to transfer using FTP. Data can be hacked as it is not SFTP and the data is not encrypted.

Do you know how to enable SFTP on the my cloud? I use Neutron Music Player on my Android phone & it has FTP & SFTP options for it. I'd like to be able to stream music from the My Cloud drive away from home. I was able to get it to work using FTP but it is painfully slow loading tracks away from home.
Found this really useful and helpful (thank you) but as I don't know how to mount the ftp server as a drive it meant that I had to revert back to slow 5mb a second transfers which has so far taken 12 hours so no speed gain - as Lal-el says below, would be great to see how to mount the ftp server as a drive to bypass the transfer from wdcloud to computer then to the attached secondary back up drive to get the speeds shown at the end of your video - couldn't find anyone else on youtube showing how to do this
Unfortunately using FTP to transfer files to a WD My Cloud device doesn’t preserve the original file dates, which is obviously not ideal for photos.
Using the My Cloud app or website to transfer files from an external USB drive plugged in also has the same issue.
Seems the issue is that WD My Cloud drives don’t support FTP MFMT...
For Mac would it be same steps ?

When I try to use the WinSCP ftp client, it asks me to specify the connection type and port. I tried both SFTP and FTP and it says the connection was refused. I wonder why. Anyone have any idea?
thanks for the video! my MyCloud has become more and more unreliable lately. bought a new HDD to copy my NAS contents to until i get a new non-WD NAS setup going. was struggling with the same problem you were (1.7TB of files that was just error during the copy process). using filezilla and it seems to be working better now. trying it on one specific file (77 gb) that kept giving me issues during the copy. about 27% transferred of this file already.
Nice alternative. I will keep this in mind. However, you can use the MyCloud file explorer using files.mycloud.com/ to copy files easily and quickly. This method works great without adding any other function or software to your system. This is not to take away from Adam's alternative but to give you another one.
When I hit Quickconnect it comes up with a Unknown certificate that lists the Subject of the Cert as being a device on my lan, and the Cert Issuer as being the same device, and then it lists the Session Host as another device on my Lan. Its asking if I should trust these certs. Whats the deal??

Thanks for the tip. I was able to login via FTP to my NAS share, but somehow I'm not seeing all the files. I am upgrading my NAS and wanted to transfer all my data from my older NAS device to a new one. I'm using WD my cloud PR4100. Any recommendation what's the most efficient way to do that? I could see the MyCloud on the network, now the Extender failed so plugged ti into the Router with ethernet.. Have to use WD tool and it finds the URL and I have to login somehow!!
You don't say whether u r using a USB cable!
Only did this the second time I plugged the ethernet cable in!
Share Access to get full access, took a moment.. WIN 10 not see it as a USB drive, keeps using WDMyCloud App and only downloads, slowly, the files, to play, wont drop to RUclips!!! DEAD slow, 123kb per 30sec.... Have to Double click, not my default in Windows!
your tips at 2:06 are too much! The Network Profile came back filled in with the static IP addresses, saved but only then gave a Cancel option..

Are you trying to audition for a job doing radio promos?
Other option is to create iscsi disk in MyCloud control panel and than connect to it with proper software, depends on your OS. After that you'll get new empty device mounted to your OS, which you can format with any FS and work with it as with local drive ;)
IMPORTANT: After enabling FTP in the network setings you still got to go to the shares tab and enable FTP in the account you're trying to make faster.
and you must hit "APPLY" ,also...else it keeps resetting and you will keep going back and redoing it

Maybe because of the update in the firmware, I had to goto to the shares and enable FTP access for each root folders.

i am unable to get pass inputting the ip address, everytime i do it says 'IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x format are reserved for use as link-local addresses and cannot be used'. Please help me fix that issue

Please choose another directory."
When I share my links/files from the wd cloud the download speed is very low outside the WLAN. Activated uPNP in the router, but maybe I need to open additional ports?
Unbelievable info, now transferring files rapidly using FileZilla! The answer has been staring me in the face, as I've been using FileZilla for web dev for a decade!
I've connected a WD 8TB USB drive to the My Cloud drive, the server can see the drive and upload new files from my Mac; however it won't let me copy files already on the My Cloud onto the USB drive, gives a 500 rename error, any idea as I'm not too sure on the permissions settings I need to change. Also, can this be done en-masse as I want to transfer a large number of files between the drives?

USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt is quicker than a standard unoptimized gigabit network, so often an external setup would be faster. 10gbe network NAS would be faster or just as fast as Thunderbolt.
