    WD My Cloud NAS or Synology/QNAP? Which Brand Should You Buy? nascompares.co...
    For many users, the first NAS they ever owned was the affordable and sturdy WD My Cloud NAS drive. From students and teachers to console gamers and small business, the WD My Cloud range of NAS devices was one of the earliest attempts by hardware manufacturers to bring the arguably tricky subject of home server ownership in an affordable and easy to use way. Indeed, in previous years I have recommended the WD My Cloud Pro P2100 and PR4100 NAS systems for use in Plex, low-level surveillance and prosumer home network storage. However, in the last few years brands like Synology and QNAP have absolutely dominated the home and small business NAS market with a large portfolio of solutions that effectively surpass the majority of WD NAS' in every possible way.

    I have a WD EX4100. When it dies I'll buy another one. Simple and effective as a NAS... a place to store files on the network without any extra features needed. And those RED drives just work.
    I realize some people think of a NAS as a multifunction computer... but not me...

    I upgraded from WD My Cloud 1 bay unit to QNAP TS-230, and added a recertified Synology DS116, all entry level NASes to my backup mix.
    If you want an easy transition from WD, Synology is all the way to go. After very simple setup process, it just works. I don't worry even if I leave it for a few months.
    QNAP, on the other hand, has a good potential but definitely needs more effort and attention. I feel frequent security/firmware updates as a chore. In addition, Storage & Snapshots app shows just a blank screen very often, which sometimes requires full device restart for the recovery. I won't recommend QNAP to anyone other than a very tech savvy person.

  • @jadgate3399
    @jadgate3399 2 года назад +1

    Ok, color me interested. However, my first contact with QNAP was not positive. Sent a request to their Sales channel to discuss their product line and support 2+ weeks ago. Other than an automated response, I have yet to hear back. As stale as the WD product line is, they do have human beings at the other end of the support request and when I reached out to them in early 2021 to do the OS 5 upgrade, they at least responded. I've had the the 4100 for 4+ years now and it's still chugging along after I upgraded the drive array from 4 TB to 10 TB drives, so I'm good for now, but in 2 to 3 years, I'm going have to upgrade to something else and I'm not sure if it will be WD or something else, but QNAP is not in the running at this point

      Just setup your DS220j normally with your new HDD's, then connect both to the same LAN and easily make a copy. In my case I made a backup from my old WD to external HDD, then setup my DS220+ with SHR and Btrfs with one new Ironwolf and dismantled WD drive from old WD and later copied the files from external HDD. 220j doesn't support Btrfs, which I think its better to go to 220+ for your next 5 years plan of having a good NAS at home

    I own all 3 and they all tick different boxes. As a minor recommendation for WD, they are far simpler for those who just want basic media streaming and file storage / sharing. QNAP and Synology require far too much messing around to get streaming up and running for the more technically challenged.

      I'm frustrated with My Cloud Home and I'm sort of glad it won't let me upgrade because now I have an excuse to get away from WD! I have always found WD to be clunky and I have multiple multiple copies of the same pictures and I wish it would recognize duplicates but it doesn't. I've watched a bunch of these NAS videos now and I'm strongly considering Synology because it sounds like it can manage my photos and videos easier and hands off. Maybe I'm wrong... I wish I knew.

    • @DavidM2002

      @@CreativeMediaTV For the best UI, Synology, hands down. I would also suggest a 4 bay as it really opens up the Raid possibilities. The Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) is the way to go. I'm far from a Raid expert but I would call it a Raid 5 but far more flexible when you need to increase storage.

      @@gabrielwilliams5315 I consider myself well organized (don't we all ? ) without having the NAS do it because it never does what I want either. My shots are normally for my travels or workshop. For travel, each batch of trip photos goes into its own folder named like : "2022 02 07 Vancouver Trip" and my workshop pics get stored by project in its own folder. Occasionally I will bulk rename files in a folder using the folder's name; Windows then adds a number to the name of each file. So, I always know where everything is and I don't let my computer or NAS mess with them. No duplicates.

    Just migrated from WD My cloud 4TB to Synology DS220+. You can't compare how Synology is doing better than WD. Their support fails as they introduced OS5 and its a real headache for even home users. Strongly suggest to move from WD because their support can't do much for you when you upgrade to OS5 and start facing remote connection and serial number corruption.

      @@jasonchampagne8958 Sure you can. This is what I did with my old WD and used its drive in DS220+. Just remember to make a backup outside because the disks will be formatted by Synology software. There are other alternatives to copy from WD to Synology, but it depends to your DS device. In 2 bay device, its not recommended. If its 4 bay, then within same LAN, you can do the copy and config much more easier. But still recommended to take backup outside and then reuse the drives

      @@jdowney1983 Yes you can do it. You won't face any issue, just double check if your WD drives are CMR and not SMR. WD usually use SMR in their products (since they have started to move to SMR drives without informing customers). The drives will be initiated and initialized by Synology.

    All of the things that customers care about are not supported by WD. The WD nas is junk. One critera for quality is that it has to be repairable. Also there needs to be a long term commitment to suppot the NAS. And if you do your homework, you'll find out that they dropped the EX2 series for updating to the OS5. In the process of dropping OS3 support you lose the capability to access the nas remotely. WD does not support repair of the NAS even if its as simple as a fan. Don't waste your time, money , and especially your data on WD products.

    It’s funny how the market changes. When I stepped up from a WD a couple of years ago, I hadn’t seen this video. From what I could ascertain, the NAS to go for - as I did - was the Asustor Nimbus 4. At that time, it was a relative newcomer and had the name Asus(tor). They looked as though they were going to be a big player and they had plenty of grunt for the money so I could run Plex (or so 8 thought). Two years down the track, the Asustor has been great but if I were in the same position again, I’d buy Qnap. I don’t really have any regrets but Asustor simply don’t have the market presence in Australia that I expected they would eventually attain. In fact, they have declined. But the Asustor isn’t suddenly a bad NAS but the software hasn’t been as highly developed as Qnap, much less Synology. At the time, there were not that many Qnaps on the Australian market and Synology were more expensive so Asustor seemed to tick at least most of the boxes that mattered.
    But I look at Qnap today and think that’s where I’ll probably look in a few years time.

    WD Cloud has been festered by (also) many security-issues, in the more recent past even;
    Most notably the vulnerability to bypass user-authentication, denial-of-service attacks, backdoors, PHP vulnerabilities and quite a few more.
    (CVE-2020-25765, CVE-2020-27158, CVE-2020-27159, CVE-2020-27160, CVE-2020-27744 are the more recent ones)
    But I believe the success (or rather: the lack of) of My Cloud is also due to the focus from WD and the fact you rely on WD's services in the USA for the MY Cloud products.
    I guess the good thing is when you lose your data, you can ask the NSA for your backup ;-)
    There are many against-WD My Cloud, such as you can not replace the HD's, you need their proprietary software, no Linux support, no SMB/AFP, and it is by means even close to a NAS.
    I avoid WD My Cloud at all costs, even when they are low in price.
