Thank you so much for the instructions! I was quoted $260 earlier this week. I don’t claim to by no means be a DIYer…far far from it, but this was an easy fix even for me. It took me less than 10 minutes. Thanks again! You’re awesome!
This was a clear and concise tutorial...good job!
Excellent !
Geees... I think I can do that ! Thank you 🤞🏽
_Ghosts?_ *Who you gonna call? W&J Handy Dad!!!*
Thank you very much, you save me at least $100.00
Thanks for the help! Another lady here fixing things!
Or in my case a worn out rubber grommet on the flapper valve body.
The previous video I watched suggested it was the ring at the base of tower that need replacement. This suggests it could be this problem. So it's a matter of taking the lid off and watching to see which it could be. Good ideas in both videos. If you live in an area of hard water it's probably the shank washer. My tank, however, doesn't have the traditional flap the inlet to the bowl is at the base of tower and the only thing that could be the cause is the 3" valve seal (available in the plumbing section of your hardware store). Everything else checks out.
it cycles because the tank is losing water. Most likely through the flap unless you are seeing water on the floor or your toilet is set up such that leaks would go into the tank from either location
Or your water level too high, tube too low.
replaced flapper, no help. also scrubbed rim of pipe opening beneath flapper. any more suggestions? the toilet doesn't sound like it does a bowl flush, it sounds like the tank partially refills once every hour or 3 hours....seems time variable.
replacing the flapper should fix it. It is possible that the little chain that hooks to the flush arm is too tight or too loose. I've also heard of some folks attaching wheel balancing weights to the flapper to give it more weight to help it seal. Good luck!
thank you for helping this newly single lady!
Glad to help. According to RUclips less than 10% of my viewers are female. Hopefully that will increase.
Thanks, our land lady will appriciate us saving her money.🌊🌊🌊
Do I turn the shut off valve clockwise? Or counterclockwise to turn off the water and is every toilet the same direction?
all of ours go clockwise to turn off
@@WJHandyDad mkay thank you
If replacing the flapper does not fix the problem, there is a minor water leak around the rubber gasket between the tank and the flush valve assembly. Apply plumber's putty to seal any imperfection. This involves removing the tank and the flush valve assembly.
I've had a couple folks say they replaced flapper and still had leaks. Thanks for the tip!
What did you fix this and it continues to do the same thing
It's possible you got a bad "flapper" but most likely I'd say it has to do with the chain adjustment. I've seen ours get part of the chain stuck under the flapper and I've also gotten it too tight to where the flapper was held up just enough to let some water leak past. Good luck!
How do you determine it is the flapper? The flapper on mine sits there, unmoving, and the water starts running. How is it the flapper is the problem? Thanks!
The flapper doesn't move, it just fails. I didn't notice anything wrong with either of our flappers, but both toilets started doing the "ghost flush" around the same time (which makes sense since the toilets are the same exact age) and stopped doing the ghost flush when the flapper was replaced. I am not aware of any other part that could fail and cause the ghost flush.
The reason is that the water level in the tank is going down slowly due to the leak. You can’t hear that, but at some point the fill valve “notices” that the water is not high enough and lets some water in to bring the level back up. That’s what you hear, but that’s not the problem.
But wait what if WANT Hanako to flush my toilet for me-
Are some flappers just garbage quality? I installed a new one recently and the toilet was ghost flushing in about two months again. I actually replaced all the "guts" of the toilet when I changed it out. Any brand recommendations if so?
you're not the first person to say they did this and then had problems again. I've never had an issue like that and I've always bought them at either Home Depot, Wal Mart, or HEB (a Texas grocery)
@@WJHandyDad I'll try Home Depot next time. I just went in and just tried wiping off along the rim of the flap and the opening in case there was grime or something. Not sure if it did anything but so far no trickle into the bowl. Fingers crossed! Thanks for replying!
hope that fixed it
Hello, thank you for this video. I had to replace the flapper after 17 years because the rubber where the chain attaches to split open. After I replaced it the toilet started ghost flushing every couple hours. Does it need a different flapper?
is the chain hooked up right?
@@WJHandyDad thanks for responding. Yes it seems to be the right tension and not getting caught. Could the seal adjust to the new flapper after a few flushes? Haven't heard any ghost flushing today yet
I suppose it's possible, but on mine it fixed it immediately
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This is happening to my new toilet
sorry to hear that. Changing out the flapper should almost always fix the problem. It's possible that the flapper isn't lined up properly, that the chain length is too short or too long and getting underneath the flapper, or that the bowl itself has damage or something preventing a good seal. Try adjusting everything and see if it fixes it. If not, you can try to put some wheel balancing weights on the flapper to give it more "oomph"
I changed the flapper and it's still flushing
it's a water leak somewhere. Probably 99%+ of the time it's the flapper. If the flapper didn't fix it then you need to do some "detective" work and see if you can find the leak. Good luck
@@WJHandyDad I put some red dye in the tank and it leaked into the toilet bowl.
sounds like you got a bad flapper or something is getting under it and keeping it from closing
@@WJHandyDad I went and bought another flapper, everything is good to go now, thanks
The ghost in our bathroom happens to be my wife's BF hiding and the one flushing it.
