    Wow!! I just happened upon this change by searching Korean Languages. I have taken a zoom class to learn Korean and have been using flash cards. This is by far the best tutorial I have come across in explaining Hangul!! Outstanding!! To think this was 9 years ago!!!! Thank you!!!!❤😊

      you're very lucky! when I was testing the waters and finding a language I wanted to learn, I found this absolute gem of a channel. I remember downloading 8 of his videos so I could watch it offline. then I lost interest in korean because I mainly consume japanese content, but now I have time and decided to come back, I dug up that stash of videos and rediscovered him. quality content that deserves more views than the clickbait you find at the top of typical search results

    I started watching this on a whim. It had always bothered me that I couldn't read Korean, but I hesitated to learn, because I thought I was setting myself up for another set of kanji, like Japanese. I was quite delighted to discover that it was all phonetics, and being already familiar with kanji, the writing blocks were easy to understand.
    The vowels are a little tricky, since there doesn't seem to be a straightforward English equivalent, but I think I got it straight now. In my mind, ㅓsounds like "oh" and ㅗ is more like "o". ㅜ is more like "oo" and ㅡ is more like "ew".
    I don't listen to a whole lot of K-Pop, I have no intention of going to Korea anytime soon, and I don't personally know any Koreans, but for some reason, this is still fascinating.
    Thank you for making these videos!

    Thank you very much for these videos. Although I've been studying Korean for three years I'm always looking for tips to improve my pronunciation and the biggest mistery to me and many foreigners will always be why the initials (not between vowels!) ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ sound clearly like K, T, P, CH to us while Koreans keep on saying they sounds like G, D, B, J to them. Seriously, I've tried hard enough to understand this and I came to the point of thinking about remodeling my pronunciation accordingly despite the weird impression it causes me. If someone has a deeper phonological explanation about it, I will be very thankful.

    • @purple3746
      @purple3746  9 лет назад +21

      Yes, maybe most of the foreigners who study Korean might say the same. : )) Let us explain a little bit. It's mainly because of the position of your tongue. The shape and the position of your tongue are different when you pronounce the English alphabet 'D' and the Korean alphabet 'ㄷ'. So, they are not exactly the same sound. When you pronounce 'ㄷ', 0.1inch (3mm) back side of, not tip of, your tongue touches a little front side of your upper gum ridge with the strong wind, but when you pronounce the English 'D', tip of your tongue touches a little bit back side of your upper gum ridge, and amazingly when you pronounce the English alphabet 'T', your tongue makes the same shape and touches the almost same spot as you pronounce the Korean alphabet 'ㄷ'. In a nut shell, you stick out your tongue more when you pronounce 'ㄷ' than 'D'. Now you know why 'ㄷ' and 'T' sound similar and why 'ㄷ' and 'D' are not the same sound. We said 'ㄷ' sounds like 'D' because it's, anyhow, a lot closer to it than 'T'. How would you say ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅊ sound like then in English? Hope you've got the point. Just try this, make the sound of 'D' with the tongue position of 'T'. That's 'ㄷ'. Have a good one.

    I have been wanting to learn Korean for the longest time but I was always scared to do so because of my learning disability but I had the biggest urge to learn it anyway. I watched so many videos but yours has helped me a lot. I tried going to a library to look for a Hangeul book for beginners but I couldn’t find anything. My neighborhood is full of Jews, Chinese and Hispanics so there is not much here. There are no tutors who know Korean here either, even if there are some, I don’t have the money to get one plus I can’t travel so I’ve been stuck. So I’ve been watching this video everyday for the past few days and it’s helping a lot. I can finally memorize the consonants and I don’t see them as English anymore. I still need help with the vowels and stuff but I’m taking it slow and even though it’s not a big thing to be proud of, I’m still kinda proud of myself for memorizing the consonants. It’s a step. So thank you for this video. 🙂💜

      We are so glad that you like our humble video. : )) Frankly Korean is not an easy language to learn, but, at least, Korean alphabet is quite easy. If you can read and write, it will definitely help you learn Korean a lot faster and easier. But, please try not to jump into the conversational way to speak Korean. You would superficially taste the sweetness, and then be tired before you go to the next level. : ))

    That's like the 5th channel I watch looking for introduction into Hangul and it's the best by far.
    Having some logic behind how letters are written and pronounced helps a lot. It's easier to memorize and provides some useful hints as to how they should sound (learning that ㅓ is 'ah' going backwards was an eye-opener for me).
    Thanks a lot!
    (BTW iotized means having shortened i-sound going in front of a vowel, like in German 'Ja', Russian 'Я', or Korean 'ㅑ'. Comes from the name of the Greek letter [iota] from which Latin letters i/j derived.)

      +bloom4mee Would the question be 'do you speak Korean' or 'what language do you speak'? The answer can be vary depends on a person. But, I think we normally answer 'I am Korean' to the questions like 'do you speak Korean' or 'I can speak Korean' to the questions like 'what language do you speak'. Sorry if I misunderstood the point of the question.

    • @benseac
      @benseac 8 лет назад

      +bloom4mee 'Korean' as in the language, would be 'Hangoogeo' (sorry for the poor Romanization), or 한국어, in Hangul. I think another way of saying it is Hangoogmal (again, sorry for the poor Romanization), or 한국말.

    • @benseac
      @benseac 8 лет назад

      There might be more ways of saying/writing it as well but I'm still just a beginning learner myself so I'm definitely not an expert in the language.

    Although I already knew the Korean script, the one thing you can never fully learn from reading is pronunciation, especially if you are learning as an english speaker because what one person says sounds like a letter, might sound different in your accent. So this was super helpful to be able to actually hear the sounds.
    Also just now figuring out that the name of the letter actually shows you how it's supposed to sound at the beginning and end of a syllable so very helpful stuff here, thanks!

    • @purple3746
      @purple3746  9 лет назад

      RetailGamers Thank you for your comment. Like you said, everybody has their own accents from their own languages. So, you don't have to be perfect at pronunciation in my opinion. We are planning to make a new video for pronunciation though. It will be great. : )
