Alba 1A Shaper Fix

  • My shaper has always had a rattling sound deep inside and on various occasions a heart stopping clunk had me reaching for the stop button or clutch lever.
    Not owning or able to find a maintenance manual/handbook for this machine I felt the time had come to dig out my old tool kit and sort it out. While I was about it I discovered where all the oil ports are. Other small issues that presented themselves also received a modicum of maintenance.

    Attracted by the 'Alba shaper' for the simple reason in the 70s-80s there was an Alba shaper as an art exhibit in the metalwork room at school. In the 5+ years there, I think I only saw it in use once or possibly twice.
    Nice video
    Nice paint job
    Nice maintenance of the machine. Although I'm wondering on gib adjustments.....I wondered about doing the ends first and the middle last on the basis that the middle is more likely to be worn - so put more of a loading on the gib ends rather than the middle !

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 года назад

      Yeah. I had that decision, but I hadn’t got a Maintenance manual and I have only ever seen it done at work by the maintenance crews. they always started with the centre and moved outwards, so I figured what the hell… it works for me..

    You made a lovely job of that Paul, and the wife's paintwork looks a treat! I love your logical approach to improving the machine. At one time, I really thought these shapers, compared to other machinery were just too crude, but after watching you and others working shapers, I now trhink they are a thing of beauty, but it's amazing just how many have damaged bullwheels. anyway, I very much enjoyed this, cheers Dave

    I made my oilers out of old brass handles. They work really well.
    I don't know who is the person who repaired that shaper previous time, but I hope he/she will never touch a machine again.

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 года назад +1

      Hi, I watch all of your videos and I always enjoy them, thanks. I also hope that the person that last put that shaper of mine together learned something about their own limitations.
      The replacement Rocker is really strong, it has to be, because I’ve modified the belt system in the pedestal. The motor is 1/2 horse power stronger than the old one and twice as fast, but it has a new pulley modification (also in the pedestal) and has been geared down 3:1, so theres lots of power, Safety is built into the new pulley system by using a shear pin on the motor drive. So if i get something wrong the shock should break the shear pin not the machine……. thats the theory!
      Cheers Paul

    I have one of these, also with a broken gear knob, the school machines which many of these were, were fixed in the low gear to avoid crashes! Mine had the spring detent removed and a lokner screw fitted to lock the gear change shaft, which is perhaps how the knob got broken, Another absorbing watch!

      @Thesheddweller  Год назад

      One thing I do know about school/college equipment is that whatever you do to try reduce crashes, creates more opportunities to create bigger bangs. Anyway, at least one bunch of gears have plenty of life left in them…. if the bull gear or rocker arm hasn’t met with the crash of doom. but I’m sure you’re on top of it all.. all the best.

    I went looking for videos on my own Alba just out of curiosity and found your video. It's very well done and I've certainly enjoyed your previous videos as well.
    I had a minor clunk which I figured was due to the bottom pin in the yoke. Your video was a great aid in being able to play "find the pinch screw". I was reach up through the motor access door and loosen the pinch screw and permit me to knock the pin out towards the left side and remove it. Sure enough there was some slight wear. While it was out I used the bandsaw to add a slot to the left side of the pin so in the future, a couple of decades or more away I'm sure, I can rotate it another 30 degrees to the next good spot. The screw driver slot aiding in doing the twist and seeing the amount of turn.

    Sorry I haven't had much time to come back and visit Paul, but this was a great vid and well videoed. I still use the method I was taught by my father some 58 years back on all restoration and tare downs. He was and an on & off shore A&P army mechanic from 1945-1954. Polio stopped his career in "54. He taught me the old N-S-E-West method the military used. This ment that no matter where a piece (like an engine, trans, e-motor, ect) was to be disassembled you would use the work spaces (or open field space) polar direction. For example, my Klopp450 was off loaded into our shop with the rear of the shaper facing the blgs north wall. To my right west true west, my left was true east, and the shapers bed (or front) was true south. All parts are then are bagged and tag accordingly. This may sound confusing at first, but when the piece of equipment is massive and working space is limited, this works well. I also find for smaller parts that egg cartons make great ways to mark and store them for reassemble. Will when on to long, but thought I share. Have a safe and warm winter,,Bear in TX.

      Thats a good idea. Mind you, as far as egg boxes go.. we have a bird that loves to chomp on egg boxes. So thats out of the question, but I do like the N,E,S,W, way of thinking… cheers

    I used to have an Alba 1A. Mine had a factory fitted bronze slider block. They must have changed the design at some point.
    It was the most fun to run machine I've ever had but I sadly had to pass it on as I needed the space and it was being used very occasionally.
    I used a Reilang oiler to lubricate all the oil ports when running the machine. It always had pools of oil on it which made keeping it clean a pain but on the flip side, it had very little wear and no rust at all despite passing through at least 3 owners before me. I think your large capacity oilers are nice but unnecessary and are only are going to exacerbate the oil puddle problem.

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 года назад

      Hi, these dead loss lube systems are messy but, I believe too much oil is better than not enough.
      The catch tray below serves as my anti rust supply, I use it to clean and coat many of my painted and none painted surfaces and it's also mixed with a little paraffin so can I use it as cutting lube.

I had to make a new slider block and file parallel the ram to fit. That went a long way to making the motion smoother. I think the issue was lack of lubrication in its prior school setting. It doesn’t crush and it remains fairly stable as thin gadget, I haven’t any shim stock less that 0.10mm (0.004”) thats why I used that. sorry about the confusion.
