Humans are so cool in high fantasy, just a dude with no extra ordinary ability that end the plan of a 2 million year long gods plan to destroy the world
I've just started a campaign with my friends as a human wizard, highly inspired by Caleb. This is my first DnD game and I cannot tell you how much fun it is being a human. There is so much roleplaying opportunity. For one, the lack of darkvision for me is an excellent roleplaying hook, as it forces me to actually imagine myself being in the situation and reacting appropriately (Dancing lights for example). And the feat from variant is so nice! I highly recommend new players like me to try human out!
That variant human with their extra skill and feat is no joke. A level 1 PC with with Perception and the Observant feat becomes the most unsurprisable character. Or Investigation and Actor and you become the Chameleon. So many wonderful and exceptional human characters!
But what does one do when one plans out a human, then rolls six high even numbers? I managed that... 18, 16, 14, 12, 12, 8. Variant up a wizard, make the scores into 15 and 13, and take Tough at Level 1 for 11 HP.
Assuming that 18 went into intelligence you could have taken +1 intelligence from human stat bump and a +1 int feat, like Observant, Keen mind, Linguist. Or the UA skill feats if you DM allows. I'm partial to Keen Mind to be honest.
My favorite part about humans is that there's no burden to interpret a completely alien life experience, being a creature that has lived for 300 plus years...
@@aenorist2431 but you usually don't need all of your stats to be higher. For Barbarian, +2 to STR and CON from Mountain Dwarf is far better than +1 to everything. Variant Human however... It allows you to boost your main stat with Ability Score Improvement AND take the feat you need - that's overpowered.
@@alyzz9863 That +1 to all stats does come in handy with point buy. But the feat and proficiency with the +1 to two stats of your choice does come in very handy.
Will Friedle is perfect for the human build! I much appreciated the joke about the lack of dark vision. Now that you mention it, 5E humans DO sound like a walking motivation poster. That would be fun to roleplay (and also play for laughs, like it is here). Feats at first level are awesome.
Will is one of the best guests CR has ever had on! He's such a smart & funny guy, I'm always impressed when I see him on CR or really anywhere else for that matter! I hope they can get him back on the show as a guest or dare I say an extended length guest, Oh I think I do Dare Say. LOL. Loved the ending to this video too!
It all comes down to the pesky lack of night vision. No one wants to have to carry a lantern or a torch, or waste a light spell. But they are otherwise very tempting.
In my campaign, they have been in a grand total of 1 (one) Dungeon™, and usually travel with caravans, so the lack of Darkvision hasn't been a problem to my human players
Humans aren't the only race that lacks darkvision. Halflings don't have it either, but they do have that nifty Halfling Luck. Goliaths and Minotaurs also don't have it. There are others as well. Any of them will have to carry a lantern, torch or use some sort of light magic... ...Or just become a warlock and see 120' through any darkness, even magical.
If you're planning a skill monkey build, Variant Human with the Skilled feat can allow you to start the game with a potential 15 proficiencies. On the other hand, if you're rolling for stats and get a string of odd numbers, the standard +1 to everything can be pretty awesome too.
These guys make me want to play these games and become a voice actor ... Love watching their videos and videos like this . Help me understand it all more . 😅😊🤦
Humans may be boring but oh man that variant human feat at level 1 gets me every time... and every time it is magic initiate so I can cast familiar and have a pet rat. Don't judge me!
I've never played as a human... but this is still a great! :) I usually saw the human as boring and limited but I was quite wrong, they're the blank slate to create whatever you want.
I’ve found that regular human has been fairly underwhelming, but the variant leads to a lack of diversity (another variant human with Pole Arm Master/Great Weapon Master/whatever strong feat? Join the five others), so what I have done is divide the list of feats into major and minor feats. At level 1, every character gets a minor feat. But humans get an extra one. This is on top of how they can get up to 3 skills, tools, or languages of their choosing, and determination (1 free reroll per long rest). It’s show to work fairly well, as it doesn’t lead to humans being almost the only race played at my table, but also makes human a very viable choice, as the ability to get two minor feats can be very good for ability scores (as I rule that all half feats, or feats that grant a +1 to an ability score) count as half feats.
Part of why I took Tough as my Level 1 feat for a wizard. Durability, works well with "he's also a blacksmith", not a complete gamechanger such as Warcaster - just a boost to his already-good (+3 Con modifier) HP. Caleb's Keen Mind is similar, as it's a feat chosen for roleplay purposes rather than micromanaging, maximizing, or metagaming. Beau's Prodigy also fits in there, as that particular feat let her pick up some additional proficiency - nothing that makes the DM pull their hair our, nothing cookie-cutter, but a deliberate characterization.
*sees Will pop up on screen* OMG!!!! WHY IS ERIC MATTHEWS HERE!!! *fangirl screams* Side note: Just got into watching Critical Role today so if there's something everyone knows that I don't, please be kind.
