I've been a player in one of them and a dungeon master for two. In my experience, they're excellent in their plot hooks but the encounters themselves need some serious alteration to be balanced for groups of first/second level. It's very easy for party members and any NPCs around them to be killed by a semi-random encounter. Overall they can be very fun but you have to put in some legwork to adjust them.

    • @omok2
      @omok2 2 года назад

See I see that as a good thing though. So many encounters were "difficult" but my players just walk through it and the reverse easy encounters are punishing.
I just tell my players to have a backup plan if things go south. Lol

@@coopermckinlay4023 lol, yeah learned that the hard way. First combat, first attack was a crit on the party tank by one of those ice frogs...party tank was a halfling fighter. Downed and swallowed him. Top of next round critted on the stomach acid damage and finished him off...dead dead. Yeah, balancing is a good idea.

    • @EinWenigRebellion
      @EinWenigRebellion 2 года назад +1

I always loved the idea, too. But it obviously has a big challenge attached: If your players ever decide that it would be time to get rid of that other adventure group, the lives of one party might quickly come to an end. And you usually don't want a TPK, so there goes your rivals.

    • @elementzero3379
      @elementzero3379 2 года назад +2

@EinWenigRebellion Twice, my players have killed the rival party, and both times for good reason, since the rivals were affiliated with the "bad guys." Those were both Eberron games.
In Numenera, no rivalries have escalated to that point. They've remained rival explorers. They might have been annoying, but they were not quite so clearly villains to be fought.

I always, ALWAYS use a team of rivals in my campaigns. It’s such a fun idea. For me personally, I implement NPCs who are named after characters from former campaigns. My rule is that there should be one fewer member of the rival group, who should be one level higher than the player characters.

Indeed! I think it's funny how this is being treated as a new and novel idea. It's been around for ...probably as long as there have been gamers playing, LOL!
Back in my 2E days, the PC's would hear tales of the latest conquests of their rivals (The Red Rangers) and grumble in jealousy, but never seemed to run into them. They did eventually meet up though, and it turned into a mutual admiration between the two groups.

Well pulling this from the page on the Dungeons & Dragons website I found the video on, "For eons, this mighty champion of the gods has been imprisoned in the darkest depths of Exandria. His name has been forgotten, as have his heroic deeds", I'm gonna say he is probably good or was at least in the past. Being left in prison and forgotten by those you serve tends to make people bitter. Then again the term "heroic" is misleading because people associate it with good, when in reality a champion of some evil god is a hero and doing heroic things for his people and his faith.

I really love what they have put out. While I love CR, I'm a huge fan of their books outside my fandom. I'll never run a campaign in that setting, as I like my own and Turil more. But it is also has very neutral setting that their stuff can be placed in almost anywhere with almost no work on the DM's part. One thing I absolutely love about the books, but never hear anyone mention, is the gazatter sections. Between EGtW and TR, I now have what feels like hundreds of unique towns and villages with equally unique hooks. There is so much material in the CR books for inspiration it's not even funny. I need a town in next week's game, I can just flip through a couple books and have something to go pretty damn easily. I need some adventure hook for that towns theme, there's probably a pretty good one there. And everything is so easily interchangeable between settings and worlds... They will work perfectly regardless of what you are running.

my DM set up a campaign using Call of the Netherdeep and setting up small side bits that he could to keep us on our toes and I remember an encounter with the Rivals which ended with one of our players whos back story had them struggling with a demon inside them, the demon took over, killed one of Ayo's party members in such a way that revivify wouldn't work and we caused a split in the party, it was so interesting to see, because Maggie left after becoming hostile to us, Ayo joined a faction we were against as a mercenary and the last 2 surviving members understood their friends death was out of our hands, they grew to not trust our PC dragonborn, but they knew it was something that couldn't be helped and we kept a strong friendship.
despite everything, even Ayo turning against us and trying to unleash the evils of the netherdeep with the group she joined with, we still spared her and rescued her when she needed it, she was a pain in our asses and a pretty weak leader, but she was our friend. she just needed to be put back on the right track and reminded that she is a hero after all and sometimes heroes don't need the glory of beating us to the finish line, they need the glory of doing the right thing and helping those she can. it was such a great campaign to play and having a DM who can incorporate risk and twists in such a way that keeps you on your toes will always make for great memories.

    Alyxian's Lament

    In the depths beneath me.
And now the chilly waters all around me
Are flowing round and round as I weep

But can't You see me all alone, bursting apart.

And there's no shortage of time
Oh give me just another moment to see the light of the day
And take me to another land so I don't have to stay
But I'm going to need someone to heal and ease my pain.
And I will receive that someone with open arms, open eyes,
Open up the sky and let The Light of Hope shine through!
For crying out loud, Avandra, You know I love You
For crying out loud, You know I love You...
I was damned but the world was saved
And I never knew just how enslaved I was kneeling in the chains of my Master.
AND DON'T YOU HEAR ME CRYING, "OBEY NO MORE"
AND DON'T YOU HEAR ME SCREAMING, 'WHERE AM I TO GO?'
I'm in the middle of nowhere, near the end of the line
But there's a border to somewhere waiting,

And I'm going to need somebody to heal and ease my pain
And I will receive that someone with open arms, open eyes,
Open up the sky and let The Light of Hope shine through.
For crying out loud, Avandra, You know I love You
For crying out loud, You know I love You...
For sending forth the rain when I was feeling so dry
For giving me the answers when I was asking You why
Oh my Goddess, for that I thank You
For shining like the sun when I'm feeling so cold
For giving me the strength when my body is old
Don't You know, for that I need You
For coming to find me when You know I'm alone
For opening a pathway so I can come home
You've got to know, for that I serve You

Rival adventuring party is something I've played with and one of two things happens depending on alignment (my players tend to lean NG and CG).
If the rival party is good-aligned, they put the greater good higher than personal fame and team up, or divide and conquer (you guys go that way, we'll go this way, and when we meet up we'll compare notes).
If the rival party is evil, they either get exposed as such to the public or just turbo-murdered.
I think the key would be to make them goodly but annoying. My players won't kill good characters, but they can be annoyed by them just as easily as anyone else. Also I can see good characters just getting so frustrated with one another that they resort to blows but only non-lethal damage. Beat them up, tie them up, but leave their gear so they can survive and because we're not thieves.
...Except maybe their pants. I mean, they don't need their pants to stay alive. They should definitely have to go into town without pants.

Best story I have about rival adventuring parties is one where two of my DMs participated in: one was the "good" party, one was the "evil" party. By the time the two parties clashed, the "good" party had metagamed to the point where they were killing off entire villages to gain an advantage. Meanwhile, the most "evil" the "evil" party did was sacrifice an endless supply of live chickens to help them cross a bridge over a bottomless pit while blinded.

This. Instead of home notes (Ed Greenwood - the Forgotten Realms) and novels we have lore and setting created by the cast of Critical Role.

The rival adventurers are potentially a big issue for the DM to handle - specifically because the players might simply get the idea to attack them. I hope this adventure is not a linear plot thread like most 5e pre-published adventures have been
