Is your water pump bad? 2012-2019 Ford 3.5L & 3.7L engines with antifreeze leak in RF corner.

- In today's video I will show how to determine if your water pump is bad, in a Ford Explorer, years 2012-2019 with the 3.5 liter engines. And this same type of water pump can also be found in numerous other vehicles with the 3.5 and 3.7 liter engines, such as the Ford Edge, Flex, Taurus, police interceptors and a couple Lincoln models as well.
So, if you happen to have vehicle such as I just mentioned, with a leak in the right front, under the vehicle just below the AC compressor that is orange or possibly yellow in color.
This will more than likely be an antifreeze coolant leak, which could be leaking from a bad water pump

This is BY FAR the best video on this topic that I’ve seen. It’s exactly what I needed. Fool me once Ford, fool me once. I won’t be played for a sucker again.
Put 129,000 miles on a 2014 Explorer and was worried about this. Then the transaxle started making noise. Fixed both by getting rid of it. It never leaked but was on borrowed time - not that bad to replace if the engine was out of the car on an engine stand. More trouble than its worth to replace it while its in the car!
Finally someone who explained this in proper detail with examples. Basically you have to hope that the cause of your coolant leak isn't due to the water pump because it will cost a lot of money and it's something that you can't do on your own unless you have the mechanical knowledge to fix it.
Could try learning to fix it, but I'm sure that's challenging and learners will encounter some issues and mistakes to work through. But I think sell a high quality timing chain and water pump kits for this car for only $300 or $400 online, so if somebody wanted to try learning and had time, they could try fixing it!
I've heard some horror stories where somebody's water pump went bad so quickly while they were driving, the engine was destroyed by the coolant and oil mixing. Not sure how fast that can happen, but it also happens on Mazdas with this engine. In the previous design of the duratec engine, the water pump was on the outside, and apparently those are very reliable. And I've heard good things about this newer Duratec engine except you need to replace the water pump preventatively and it's super expensive like this.
I have a 2013 Ford Edge with the 3.5 non-turbo v6. 140,000 miles and no problems yet. I change the oil every 5,000 miles with full synthetic and change and flush the radiator every three years. The new motors won’t take any neglect like the old iron blocks. Keep up with your maintenance and the water pump should last 200,000 miles.
Wrong but gl
Hey there, did yours go out? If so are you doing a repair video? And even more when would it come out? Thank you.
Hello. A beautiful result. My mazda cx9 3.7 engine has 210,000 miles. Original pump. Original timing. What does valve clearance look like? Do the pushers need to be replaced?
My 2013 Ford Explorer XLT has been sitting in my garage for over a year because the mechanic wants $3700 to replace the water pump. I’ll never buy another Ford. Scrap metal on four wheels.
Here I am doing them for $600

@troyleyden1929 I'm in Dallas Texas. I travel though lol
@@dannyfranco7441 might need you in Maryland here soon... mine is leaking
All Fords are notorious for having bad water pumps they never perfected the problem they dont last long from cars trucks I owned from the 1960's to the present the water pumps will fail way much sooner then any foreign built vehicle especially any toyota vehicle they last forever never had water pump go out on me, being once a ford guy I will never go back buying any ford vehicles I will stick with toyota never having to worry bout a water pump going out.
no more fords for me , unless they fix the problem
The resivore Line on mine had a solid piece of plastic instead of a screen which I believe cost all my problems. It was the one on top closest to the windshield is that called a burp line? Has anybody else had this problem? Is it coming straight from the factory this way?
I have a ford taurus and the engine overheats only while driving and not while idling Can it be the water pump? Also somehow the heater is not working It not blowing out hot air? Does the heater have anything to do with my overheating engine?
Its also only about 1500 to replace.. but have them do all the timing components also. It can absolutely be done without dropping motor.. also change oil pump wile in there
1500 would be on the very very very cheap end. Most places will charge $3500+
Can we get an electric water pump for the 3.7l???
Holy Cow!!
Hi i have question do i still need to seal the oil pan ? I'm good when i already replace the water pump.?
Yes you do. Grey rtv it.
Hi I have a 2016 Ford Explorer and the water looks like it’s coming out of this area leaks or spreads down to the oil pan i assume when I was driving and the wind carried the coolant downwind it only has 55016 miles I’m not looking forward to paying this ouch great video
Sorry to hear it's going bad, with only 55k that's unfortunate.
My 2016 Ford Explorer Water Pump went bad at 100K miles almost exactly. I was quoted 3 Grand to fix it. Buying a new car other than Ford. LOL.
2016 Ford explorer water pump just went out at 87000 miles
i have the same problem at 56k miles only on a 45k car,,, incredible,,,,,,,, but i am mechanically inclined but never worked on a side engine, but i am gonna give it a crack cuz i dont want to pay 2k+ for this repair , the parts and tools i need wont cost anywhere above 500....
@@bennyfernandez1273 have you ever changed your Antifreeze on a regular basis ? saw video of a guy who changes his on a regular basis with a good quality antifreeze and says he has gotten near 250,000 miles with the same water pump**says that if you dont change it it will eat the rubber seal around the water pump and also will destroy the water bearing in it **sounds logical to Me**Im just learning like all of us here **who is trying to prevent this costly problem**hope this helps** i dont have an explorer yet but God willing probably soon
2017 3.7L. water pump leaking inside the motor, no leak outside. With 68K I just finished paying for it and the warranty is over as well. Do you think the water pump has an extended warranty?
Unless you purchased an extended warranty, there is none. Fix it and move on. Any antifreeze in the engine has the potential to destroy the engine.
Does a 2021 Expedition have an interns water pump?
2021 Expedition likely has the 3.5 ecoboost longitudinally mounted for rear wheel drive application. The internal water pump on the Duratec 3.5/3.7 is on the transverse mounted front wheel drive vehicles like Explorer, Edge and Taurus.
Can i use seal repair to get over this issue?
No.
Ford should have a recall on the water pump……Last week I was in the car with my little baby and the car overheated and stopped in the middle of the streets and again on the highway, I did not even drive too long…. Today the dealer told me that the water pump is the cause and the cost to fix it is $4000 and that is without tax….. my husband and I are looking elsewhere to fix it…. This is dangerous especially when you have a baby, children, elderly in the car.
look for a local mechanic, mine charged me $1500 for water pump and timing chain kit, and he did an amazing job this was 2 months ago
@@itsalex3631Where is your mechanic located?
It's best to get a used engine for $500 to $600 if not turbo from a crashed junked police car from LQK and pick it up yourself because you'll get charged $200 for shipping then a mechanic to put on for $600 to $800. Happened to me with my 2014 Taurus Police Interceptor sedan. Got a 42k 3.7 V6 engine from a 2015 crashed police car with a water pump in good condition. $1600 .
2.0 ecoboost better?
What a horrible pos design. Thanks for the video. I might have to pass on picking up a used 2014 explorer.
Is it worth it to pay for the preventative maintenance for this fix? I'd end up getting the timing chain, tensioner, and other parts replaced as well. I have a '14 police explorer w/ 136,694 miles
I would say yes absolutely it’s worth it. If this thing fails on you at a bad time time like when your on the highway the coolant contamination could ruin your engine. My buddies WP just failed at 155K and until we tear into it and get it fixed not really any way we can know if it’s severely damaged.
136k on a police car. Its prob already been done. That engine prob has 10k hours on it.
Did you get a preventative maintenance plan? Who did you go with?
@@Blickster I got a new car instead
@@greendrill12can you tell by doing a temporary oil change and coolant flush and just running the engine for a few minutes to and hear if anything is knocking? Or would it still be a bad idea to run the engine at all?

Will you still be posting your video of replacing this?
Yes, hopefully this weekend, it's around 45 min long.
I am in the process of getting my 2019 repaired and the cheapest I could find was $2700, cause most places were charging $3,100-$3,700. This is a dealership job because you have to literally take the entire engine out and most local mechanic shops don't have the tools.
it can be done with the right tools and some mechanical skills,, i am not a mechanic and i am doing it ,,,
You actually don't have to remove the engine at all? That's a gigantic waste of time.
I do these water pumps in 4.5 hours. Book time is 10.5. In my home garage. $65 pump, oil, a gallon of coolant and a tube of the right stuff rtv. So about $120 in parts. You can replace the valve cover gaskets, crank seal, plenum gaskets at the same time, but most of the time they are fine to reuse.
@m ph something doesn't seem right if it's only taking you 4.5 hours, literally every real shop mechanic is saying 10 - 14 hours
@@ashplatt8488 that is flat rate book time. That’s how mechanics and shops charge for repairs. My 4.5 hrs it takes is done properly without comebacks.
I will defend Ford just a little bit. Literally millions of these vehicles were produced with these engines and the percentage of ones with early water pump failure is pretty low. Many of the ones that did fail early were because of poor maintenance. If you own a car with one of these engines make sure oil changes are done on time (or earlier) and have the cooling systems serviced with fresh Ford approved coolant every 30k miles. This will greatly put the odds on your side that your water pump will last 150k miles or more. There are thousands of these engines that have got to 200k on the original pump...my bet would be that those ones were meticulously maintained. An ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure.
All cars have inherent problems. I would take the Ford 3.5 ltr engines any day over the GM 3.6 ltr ones that are notorious for early timing chain failures. Honda, Subaru and Nissan have all had expensive transmission issues in some of their cars. And don't even get me started on Chrysler or any European brands.
"Thanx My Brother" maintenance- maintenance- maintenance Spot on
There is no excuse for this. FORD should be ashamed for even designing an internal water pump. Yes maintenance is a great deterrent for early mechanical failures but there are so many of these annoying and very expensive issues with this explorer, and many more models. That godforsaken sync 2/3 radio alone made me swear a blood oath the old gods and the new that I’ll never buy another ford. Before the bullshit started I genuinely enjoyed my explorer sport. I’ve had to replace both turbos, two radios and now the water pump, I was about to replace the world’s worst factory struts. This is like an abusive relationship, you have to cut your losses and walk away.
Na my mecamic charge me 6:30 for.the same problem
Did a few of those over the years, even as a mechanic they aren't fun.
Anyone try using an external pump, rather than replacing this junk?
I had sister in law explorer water pump let go she got rid of the SUV..my wife's Edge has some thing....when it happens I'll pay to have it fixed... But will be my last Ford so Ford bean counters back in the Ford management congratulate yourself you lost millions of customers for your utter stupidity of making a vehicle with such a water pump designed this way ...no more Fords after this..I own a Toyota Tacoma and Avalon and they don't worry me as bad as that POS Ford
2011 Ford Flex, I have a leak in this exact spot only after the engine warms up. Mechanic wants $3700CAD to replace the water pump, timing chain, and tensioners. Considering I bought the vehicle for about that and already had $4000 in repairs already I'll be scrapping it :(. Fuck Ford
A huge jackass design this engine. It would have been pretty easy to have the cooling water boss outside of the timing chain cover on, instead of in, the engine. I think these POS engineers design some of this in order to make dealerships money. A lot of people fall for the dealership BS and think that only the dealer can do this job when any good mechanic, pro or not, can do it. I remember decades ago when I went to an auto show and Cadillac had just come out with the NorthStar V8. They had a cutaway engine display and the starter was UNDER the intake manifold. When I asked about it, the sales guy indicated that it was rated for 100000 miles too. So, again, it required tearing down the top end just to replace a $100 starter. The mechanical engineers doing this, and their bosses, need to be drop-kicked off the planet!!
I wish he had pointed out the weep hole on the engine.
I pointed out exactly where it leaks. The weep hole on the water pump is internal. You can't visually see it without taking the engine apart.
Ford Junk Engineers
Shame on ford
Anyone with the ability to do this repair is smart enough to not buy a Ford! BMW and VW's with the timing chain on the back of the engine are even worse!
