Your video completely ignored the fact that this laptop can also be used as a TABLET, and that has a large factor in the price. This was an awful review and you shouldn't review any more Microsoft/Windows products in the future if you aren't willing to give them a fair review.

Hold up. I have the 15" SB2, and I don't think you're being reasonable. Sure, it can be used as a tablet, but as a tablet it's significantly less useful. For started, there are no ports available (besides the surface connector) when using just the clipboard. Second, the battery life on the clipboard alone is abysmal. There are no stands or cases designed for use with just the clipboard, which basically makes the clipboard only useful for short periods of time and very specific use-cases.
I love my SB2, but I'd never pitch its usefulness with any reverence toward the clipboard alone.

This reviewer is either biased or has no idea how to do actual testing. I'm literally typing this on my SB2 right now after running a Cinebench R20 test and with the same processor he listed I got 1475, NOT 942. Maybe he had power savings on or something, who knows?
When I ran the geekbench tool I got the same results.
When I used the Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 I had an average FPS of 33.7, Score of 848, Min FPS was 11.0 Max FPs was 67.2. However this was a GTX 1060 and at a resolution a little higher than the one in this video. 3240x2160 vs 3000x2000.
As for the sound, this thing sounds great, especially considering the compact area the speakers are driven from. Again, this is a matter of opinion between people but there is in no way distortion at high volumes from this. The lows aren't lacking, they're just fine. And lets be frank here, if I'm looking for outstanding audio, I'm not going to be using a laptop.
The pricing of $2999 is correct, but I just went to the microsoft store online and priced out the 15" w/ i7, 16gb of ram, and 1tb of storage and it too comes out to $2999 as well. PLUS you get the GTX 1060 with that instead of the 1050 that the 13" has.
Over all after using this SB2 for almost 2 years I can say the build quality is outstanding. It's taken everything I've thrown at it and handles it all swimmingly. I very much prefer using this laptop over any of the mac's I've owned before as well as my new mac book pro. Just personal preference.

    • @ultrawidepc
      @ultrawidepc 5 лет назад +7

Yeah I can confirm the same for the speakers they're literally part of a tablet and sound great for being in that.
The whole saying the 3000$ price tag while using the GTX 1050 13inch is just misleading for performance but honestly no one should buy it right now unless they ABSOLUTELY have to I'd wait for a surface book 3 with new Intel 10th gen chipset as well as Nvidia's RTX series discrete GPU

Really guys? Reviewing a 2017 laptop in 2019? What are you trying to prove here? Also a MacBook Pro competitor? The Surface Pro competes with the MacBook Pro, not this laptop; the MacBook Pro does not have a detachable screen with a dedicated GPU in it, it does not have a touchscreen, and it barely competes with the ports selection. You also made an argument about performance but only tested it on *benchmarks* with absolutely no real-life testing stated at all.
Be honest here. Did you run out of products to review? Or are you just so delusional-y biased towards Apple that you just have to diss on Microsoft like that?

Philipp Yeo 2 Microsoft is still selling the Surface Book 2 as a brand new device in 2019. Did you even watch until the end of the video? He said it would be better to either wait for the new model which apparently is coming up soon or get a MacBook Pro that has more modern specs.

Come on, guys, your comparisons are just hilarious.
    1) You compare CPUs of this laptop with baseline MacBook Pro and literally make a conclusion that MacBook is more powerful than Surface Book based on your CPU tests. So... What about graphics performance? Can your baseline MacBook Pro run games, even on low settings? - the answer is simple - no, but you won’t mention this in your “comparison”. Surface Book stands in its own niche as you won’t find even 5 compact laptops with 1050 and higher GPUs on the market.
    2) You have 3000$ config on your test and say it’s a hefty price tag. Well... You can easily choose 2000$ configuration and still have dedicated GPU, though you won’t have 1 Tb storage, of course. Why don’t you mention it?
It’s hard to anticipate any kind of fair comparisons and arguments from a channel called AppleInsider, you better be called ApplePromotion or ApplePropaganda.

The model you are reviewing is the 13" 1050GTX, where is that listed as 3000 usd? The higher end model with 16gb ram, 512 gb is $2499 USD. And the unit can be had for as low as $1499 when you spec it lower. In fact, you can go even as high as the 15" model and get it for $1999 for the 256gb model with a 1060gtx. Your review is misleading and doesn't layout the other pricing options which are far more enticing for this unique laptop.

If you want an unbiased review from someone who owns one of these AND a macbook pro, here you go.
It's a solid two in one, with the pen you can set the two buttons to do just about anything, i set mine to take screenshots which are easily cropped on screen instantly, which i set into my notes directly. The performance difference is hardly noticeable, i don't even get the whole 'colour' thing he mentioned at the start. It's windows, which for uni, school, or work for most people is just lovely. Comes with all the office tools too, and also works really well as a tablet, the tablet has a seperate battery that it runs on when in tablet mode, and can last a good 5-6 hours, and if you want you can just set the screen on backwards, which is just fantastic for on the go touch-screen btw. The touchscreen is great, works just like any normal tablet, can even get apps if you want to. It's pretty light, and very versatile for a bunch of different activites.
Wouldn't recommend for high performance gaming or high level video editing, since the price is only crazy like the one in the video if you actually intend to use it for that and need those specs, although even the best model wouldn't be 3000$, get one under 2000$ for whatever you need it for, and it'l be great!
One or two downsides, during high performance tasks (which as a programmer can happen even though i use it as a work laptop) the screen won't detach as it can't run it all in the screen alone, and it can get pretty warm too. But it will tell you what needs to be closed before you can detach it, and honestly, why would you need to remove the keyboard when gaming or programming anyways.
All in all, fantastic product, it's versatility, battery life, slick build and tablet capabilities make it work the money. Oh, and a windows tablet is just amazing for notetaking :)

1.iPads are Trash in terms of video editing. There is no Final Cut Pro, let alone After effects. Lumafusion can’t even do a proper green screen colour keying.
2.File sharing is garbage. I don’t understand why Apple can’t simplify files app like windows or Android.
3.You can’t use all kinds of Thumb drive except a few.
      4.Mouse support is a joke.
5.Safari is not as powerful and optimised as Chrome or other desktop version browsers.
6.You can’t download a lot of things in safari, for example if I want to download any NCN music video from RUclips using savefrom.net , you can’t do that.
      7. You can’t do real coding. For example u can’t use Tkinter gui in Python interpreter from AppStore.
Having said that iPads does prove to be good in some areas.
      1. Note taking.
      2. Procreate.
      3. Affinity photos.
      4. Garage Band.
      5. Basic video editing. In Lumafusion or iMovie which is another great joker app.
Other than that, it’s pretty much useless.
I hated macs for the fact that it just can’t align my daily tasks as seamless as a windows device would do. It can’t interact with most of the platforms, devices directly. For example you need to carry extra hub for projector connection. It draws you towards the Apple ecosystem. Where you would need to have an iPhone, iPad and iMac for heavy tasks etc. I don’t like that.

I have the SB2 13" and saw this on my recommended and decided to watch. Most of what he said isn't accurate at all. The screen is the Microsoft's top of the line PixelSense display, which has a resolution of 3000x2000, which is even higher than that of the Macbook Pro, the only downside is brightness (although it can get very bright, it's a little less than the Macbook).
The keyboard and trackpad are (unanimously among reviewers) the best in Windows laptops. For me personally, the keyboard is WAYYY better than the butterfly from Apple and even a little better than the scissor keyboard (for iMac). The trackpad is on par. The sound if great and gets pretty loud, since he didn't show how it sound in the video I don't know if he just made that up or if he has a defective model.
As for the IO, it is undoubtly better. The 2 USB-A ports are a most, even in 2019, and the Surface Connect for charging can be used for the "Surface Dock" which hads even more ports. I have the Surface Pen and I've used the Apple Pencil on iPads for a long time and I prefer the Surface Pen by a lot. My writing is less shaky with the Surface Pen and it has 1000+ levels of pressure, which makes it very responsive.
In terms of real performance, I don't have exact times or benchmarks but Adobe Premier, Photoshop and Sony Vegas work flawlessly. In terms of gaming, it is better than what he said in the video. Battlefield 4, Mortal Kombat X and The Witcher 3 run at 60fps with Medium settings and less demanding tittles like LoL and CS-GO run above 120fps with Max Settings.
Oh... and for a true comparison vs Macbook Pro:
    Longer battery ✓
    Touchscreen ✓
    USB-A port ✓
    Tablet and Studio mode ✓
dGPU (not for hardcores, but pretty good for most gamers) ✓
    Face-ID ✓

Thanks very much for the review. One advantage to the Surface book potentially is the dedicated graphics card. Not sure how this offsets the 4 core in SB2 vs 8 core in comparably cost MacBook Pro. Note to enthusiasts of machine learning: this unit has an Nvidia graphics card which I have read is the standard for machine learning software. However I cannot speak at all to the power of this particular GPU.

There are two different size screens, 13" and 15". The fully spec'd out SB2 is $3200, which is probably the config shown at 0:52, but prices run from $1150 for the 13"/i5/8GB RAM/128GB to the fully spec'd shown. This doesnt include ~$100 Surface Pen that depending on how you use the SB2 can be a must have.
I get you wanting to compare this to a Macbook Pro, but a more accurate comparison would have been the iPad Pro, seeing as both devices are tablets that can also be used as laptops. But, if you feel more comfortable skewing the playing field, thats fine as well.
There are plenty of sites that provide a more unbiased opinion/ review of these system. Add to that, Apples current reputation for hardware problems and almost complete lack in desire to repair their customers system, cough Louis Rossman videos ruclips.net/user/rossmanngroup cough. It seems that one would almost rather avoid a company that wont support the very customers that have over spent on sub-par systems.

This review is almost like comparing a toaster to a refrigerator. Pretty much everyone who buys an SB2 does so because it is the best 2-in-1 on the market. To downplay or leave that fact out is to miss the whole point of the product. If you want to compare, you have to get both a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro to go against an SB2. And when you do so, the SB2 wins on price, weight, and convenience. To those who want an SB2, touch and ink is everything, and it is GREAT!

How do you compare two products that are etirely different from each other in what they try to do. Not only that, the surface book 2 is OLDER than the MacBook Pro that you're using. You also seemed to have completely ignored the fact that it's also a tablet (which is exactly what the Surface Book 2 is like all about). Your benchmarks are also wrong? Where did you get those values, like, what??????
Not to mention that it doesn't have a bad keyboard like Macbooks do. Why are you comparing the two?

I personally don't encourage Microsoft Surface Book 2. I got one and have issue with the battery life when it was detached to tablet mode, despite 2 times of replacement. Basically, it drained from 100% and jump to 95%, which bypass 99% to 96%. Microsoft technical support tried to remote into the laptops (which included the replaced ones) with lot of troubleshooting and Windows updates but unable to solve the issue. People who own it, can do a check and please take note it happened only when it is in tablet mode. Please let me know if you don't have this issue or already figure it out how to solve it. I'm currently in the midst of getting back my refund.

ive had one of these for over a year... it workes fine. however the build quality is terrible. they covered the whole thing in some kind of thick grey laquer / paint (why they didnt just use the raw aluminum like apple does i dont kmow)... but as u use the machine or move it around. this laquer / paint chips off super easily... especially all along the edges but also in the middle aswell if its bumped at all. it ends looking very rough very fast. doesnt affect performance... but a very strange and dumb deceision by whoever came up with this idea.
also the lid closing after a while doesnt line up and doesnt shut fully on 1 side (3mm gap left on right side)
also for this price... these issues should not be there.

I'm curious which year MBP they're comparing a 2 year old laptop against. And yeah, the pricing is all wrong. With cyberweek deals, this laptop is more appealing than ever. Able to pick up a tablet/laptop with a dedicated GPU for $1600.
I use a macbook pro (15) every day for work, and that thing heats up faster and throttles faster than anything I've ever worked with.

I did physically damage the SD card slot on my Surface Book II. That happened just before I sent the item to Microsoft service center in Sydney to fix its charging issue (which now I know is a common problem). I was hit hard when I heard that they can't repair my device's charging problem because the SD card slot is broken!!! No one told me this device is not repairable and can only be replaced when I was buying it. Since I broke the sd card slot, it is not under warranty anymore. And since it is not under warranty anymore and since it cannot be repaired, I have to pay AUD970 to get a replacement or live with a critical function issue (not charging) because a couple of SD card contacts are broken. That is the worst product design, service and customer care I have ever experienced. I did damage the device. Yes. But no one told me I cannot repair any other part because of that! I told them I am happy to pay for the repair but no!
You only can get a replacement, and you can't get it unless you pay up!
So what is the meaning? It means if you have a problem with your surface, either they messed up in fabrication or design, in which case you get to get a new piece of junk if you are lucky and catch it while under warranty. Or you did a mistake which normally should only cost you a couple of hundreds to fix, which it usually voids the warranty and you can't even pay for a repair. All you can do is to buy another piece of junk for 70% of the price.
Also, if you have data on your device and you just broke the screen, too bad. Although you could get a new screen and save your data, Microsoft will just give you a new one. You will lose your data!
You know what's worse? Microsoft DOESN'T CARE! They are very good at not caring. Just see how many flaws Windows has, or just how many people complain why Microsoft Edge goes to next or previous page instead of scrolling the page when you scroll your mouse. No response, ever! I was so naive when I thought they will respond to my complain. They just sent me the sales T&Cs, which "non-repairable" was nowhere to be found in it. Not buying any MS device ever again, not even a mouse!

As a owner of one, I'd say No. Don't get it.
Firstly, the graphic card tends to be on/off sometimes, and you have to reattach the screen to turn it back on.
Second. no one ever uses the tablet mode. The battery last like 2 hours in tablet mode, and it's so tedious to detach and reattach.
Thirdly, Price. I bought this despite the high price because it has Nvidia 1060, which allows it to run some mid-tier games, but it's loud sometimes. And loud can be scary on a $2899 laptop.
Plus there are laptops much cheaper with better graphic cards(Razer Blade 15 is $1000+ cheaper, and it comes with Nvidia 2060/2080).
It's also a tad inconvenient to use as a LAPtop because the screen is much heavier than the base.
Is it still a good laptop? yes. But not for the price, because there are better, yet cheaper options. I much rather have a Razer Blade Stealth or 15, but alas.....I can't return or exchange it.

Gamut coverage has NOTHING to do with color accuracy. Indeed, the SB is one if not the most color accurate laptop out there according Displaymate, Notebookcheck.net...
Saying that the keyboard is "one of" the best Windows laptop, do you suggest that the awful butterfly Apple keyboard is anywhere close ? Even with your channel title, this is just more than fanboyism and just plain silly or trolling.
Last point : you are reviewing the Surface Book, not the Surface Laptop. How come you can claim it is expensive when it is as powerful as A MBP 13, much better for applications and tasks using the GPU and replace also an iPad Pro 12.9" + stylus + Magic Keyboard, a combo that costs more than 4000$ so TWICE the price of the SB2 ?
Too bad that Apple users cannot show common sense and good faith because it keeps drawing people away of Apple products because of the bad image that a few vocal users are giving.

You would have to compare apples to apples...yea pun intended...so to be totally fair you would have to buy a MacBook AND an IPad which will put you very close to that $2500 to $3000 mark..so to have a single machine that does both? Yes it was worth the money to me...I have the the IPad Pro 11” and there is nothing more elegant. However it will never replace my Dell XP13 for my engineering and other Windows based programs which will never go OS. That was the final straw for me. So I will never give up my IPad Pro? I'm on my 3rd SB2 in less than a year. I wish I had never bought it. The first one lasted around 3 months and then developed a fault which made it randomly disconnect the keyboard so it was unusable even though it was still attached. The connections between the keyboard and the screen basically just fell apart, so I returned it under warantee.
The 2nd unit arrived, but I could tell it was a "rework" not new replacement, so I loaded everything up ... takes about 3 hours to get everything back to where you want it. I noticed the battery had run out ... I charged and discharged several times but the battery would only last about 3 as compared to the 17 hours claimed.
I returned it, and complained bitterly to Microsoft that having purchased a "Rolls Royce" machine I didn't expect to be driving a Mini.
They sent my unit number 3, which was new - you could tell by the packaging.
The 3rd unit performs OK, but I don't disconnect the screen much as I am afraid I will damage the connectors again. The battery is now about 6 months old, and I am down to 6 hours of life max .... I have never got even close to 17 as claimed. Most achieved when new was around 9 hours.
A huge misrepresentation by MS in my view....
    Would never buy another one.
