Disclaimer: Not a linguist, just a weeb. Anyway, quick guide to japanese suffixes:
-sama is a suffix used to convey great respect, over and above the norm. (The leader of a country, for example. Coby uses it for Alvida out of fear)
-san is for regular respect - the equivalent of sir, mister, madame, miss, etc.
-chan is a diminutive suffix used to show affection - usually used for female friends/peers and very young children of both genders
-kun is a suffix used to show affection, usually for male friends/peers (can generally be thought of as the male equivalent to -chan)
Using someone's name just on its own, no suffixes added, can be either a sign of a close friendship or a sign of disrespect, depending on context.

Yes this!! 🤩 And it’s good to notice because there will be some key future instances where say, a character who normally uses suffixes, will suddenly drop them for a specific person, showing their relationship falling apart... OR on the flip side, a character who doesn’t care to use them, suddenly starts using them for a person, showing they’ve grown fond of or started to warm up to/respect the person they were initially wary of. It’s not easy to convey well in English subtitles, so noticing these little instances heightens the emotions of scenes 😍 (spoiler examples):
      Pudding: "Sanji!!! .....san~"
or when Nami slaps Sanji after he fights with Luffy, she drops the "kun" and just flat-out calls him "Sanji" before slapping him

Thanks for letting people know this. This knowledge really helps as knowing the different honorifics since which one is being used comes up quite frequently showing how characters think of one another... usually if they're seen as using a disrespectful one since they can start fights.

though chan is also often used to denote cuteness and/or liking someone a lot, a lot of anime have characters use -chan to show how little they give a shit about decorum or how much theylike the character regardless of how theother character feels, and rarely as a passive-agressive taunt (like treaitng someone like a weak child)

Omg I reacted the exact same way seeing luffy for the first time, he was way goofier and funnier than I expected a main character to be-and I absolutely fell in LOVE with his character from the start lol, he’s such a unique breath of fresh air. 🙏🏼🥹 These were such fun reactions!! You picked up on a lot of great things, too. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 can’t wait for the rest, I know based on your reaction that you’ll love the rest One Piece has to offer because it continues to get better from here. Like all shows, it has its small ups and downs, but One Piece always trends upwards 😎I originally started the series as a deal with my husband lol (he watched a show I recommended, now it was my turn to watch one piece at his request), and seeing the 1000 episodes was daunting…but after witnessing Luffy’s antics the very first episode, I just knew I was gonna love the entire ride 🤩, and after catching up 1000+ episodes simply isn’t long enough 😂

    RE Suffixes:
Sama is used to show respect. It is usually from someone under another (say a lower-rung minion to a boss) to show respect. If you were a prince and your father was king, you would probably call him by -sama in front of other people but in private you wouldn't unless you were being formal.
San denotes a polite way of talking to someone. It often takes the place of Mr/Mrs/etc as a formal way of indicating that you're being polite to them. Usually between equals of the same standing.
Chan is used for close friends or someone younger than you, usually children. If you use -chan with someone similar in age to you, it denotes that you're very close. It can be swapped with -kun, which is a more masculine version, but both can be used for either gender, though comes across more playful/teasing if a boy is called by chan or a girl is called by kun. It really depends on the situation. If your bully is calling you by -chan and you're male, he's looking down on you. If your twin sister is calling you by -chan and you're male, it's probably in a more jokey/playful way. It pretty much means 'cute/little'.
Tan, Swan, chwan, etc are cutesy ways of using chan/kun.
Sensei denotes a professional of some kind - usually a teacher or doctor. It's usually used by a student to their teacher or a patient to a doctor, showing respect.
Sempai is usually under-classmen to upper-classment but it can also be used by people in the same field towards a more experienced but technically equal person in the same field, or someone you highly respect in the same field as you. The opposite, from upper to under, is Kohai.
So for a quick example, Kaa-chan would be the equivalent of Mummy or mama, but Okaa-san would be equal to Mum or Mother and Okaa-sama would be very formal way of saying Mother. Tou-chan would be a cutesy way to call your father (like daddy), Tou-san would be equivilent to Dad and Otou-sama would be Father - a lot more formal and respectful.
These suffixes really help you gauge various relationships between people.
As for how to call Luffy? Just Luffy is fine unless you're wanting to break out the full name, in which case, you put respect on the D. >.

@@BenBenReacts The reason they do this is because by the time the anime had come out One Piece was already quite popular in Japan and so, most people had already read it so it wasn't really spoiling anything that anyone who would have watched the anime didn't already know. It's definitely a hurdle for new watchers to keep an eye out for, though.

One Piece is famous for spoiling even manga readers on its openings. Some openings have spoilers from 500+ episodes later.
Opening 3 is speacially spoiled, it might ruin 50 episodes for you if you see it by mistake

@@BenBenReacts There's a few that include spoilers for the end of their respective arcs... at the start of the arcs. There's one that goes through three arcs of spoilers in one - so it's a good idea to wait for an arc or two before checking out those openings again. Likely they figured at the time of those arcs that the manga was already a huge phenomenon in Japan so they wouldn't be spoiling much to anyone who wanted to watch... alas for the rest of the world who wasn't caught up at the time. >.

Sama, chan, san, kun, tan are all ways of addressing a person. For example, sama is used for a revered person. So if I say Luffy sama, it would mean Great Luffy or Luffy God literally. San is generally used for an elderly person. Chan is used for a girl who is similar in age to the person speaking. Tan is just a cutesy way of chan. Kun is used just like chan but for a boy instead.

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 Год назад

      Not quite... right...
Sama is to denote respect. It is usually from someone under another (say a lower-rung minion to a boss) to show respect. You would call a king or lord sama or dono, depending on how much you're trying to suck up to them.
It can be swapped with -kun, which is a more masculine version, but both can be used for either gender, though comes across more playful if a boy is called by chan or a girl is called by kun.
