I don't recommend watching The Greatest Story Ever Told. It's quite Spoilery. I do however strongly recommend a video called The Breathtaking World of One Piece by Strawhat V. No spoilers, just setting your expectations to what kind of world you're getting yourself into. It's actually an amazing video. Couldn't recommend The Breathtaking World of One Piece enough.
Never seen a single person who remembers something from The Greatest Story Ever Told. It isn't really a spoiler when you don't know the contexr.

completely agree with both, especially The Breathtaking World of One PIece--that video is one that made a lot of people skeptical about starting the show, want to watch it, and most of which are now diehard fans :') Tbh I watch The Breathtaking World reactions like 5 times a week at least, I can never get enough of that video, it always...takes my breath away lol

One interesting thing to know is that the anime is entering into the final saga soon. Apparently according to Oda (the author) the whole story so far (over two decades worth) was basically just a prequel to the epic final saga that's about to start. A lot of people think it will probs end in about 5 years. The story has already been fantastic so far, so the hype right now is crazier than ever.

The brothers name is Ace and he was in the last few openings you watched, you just missed him. Such an iconic character he sticks out to me pretty easily.

The Straw hat is tied to a promise he made to Red Haired Shanks as a little boy. Something you learn about in chapter 1 of the manga but episode 5 or something like that in the anime. So it's not really a spoiler. It's central to the story. Luffy cherishes that hat. It's his treasure. Strawhat Luffy of the Strawhat Pirates.
Edit: Just gonna throw in random trivia here as I watch your reaction. Luffy does have the power of a devil fruit called the gum gum fruit. It changed the properties of his entire body to rubber at the cost of his ability to swim. So he's a rubber man. All devil fruit power holders share the weakness of sinking like a stone. They essentially become weak when submerged in water. Also, it's not entirely accurate that every single one of his crew has powers but I'm not gonna go into any of that as that would be spoilerish.

Openings can generally be tied to arcs, but arcs in One Piece vary GREATLY in size. Some of the arcs are very short like 10-20 episodes while other arcs have over a 100 episodes. So certain arcs can have multiple openings cover it, while other times an opening will cover multiple arcs.
The thing with Arcs is that they can last as little as a few or 10 episodes of it can be up to around 50-100 episodes or even more, so with the openings they kinda indicate how long the Arc will be. For example OP 16's arc lasts around 46 episodes while OP 22, 23, & 24 is over 120 episodes

Worth noting about all the different openings is that it is an ancient old series. Musical styles have developed, but also the story has. Early One Piece is a very different beast than the One Piece later on in terms of the story and subjects it discusses. It is much like growing up: as a kid you are sheltered from a lot of the bad things in the world, and when you grow up you suddenly realize that everything is wretched and unfair. It goes from Villain-of-the-Week and focused on the small scale developments of the crew, to casting the net wider into the greater world, looking at whole kingdoms, and eventually down the rabbit hole while pissing off literally everyone a sane person wouldn't piss off by rioting through their proverbial dirty underwear for dirt. The scale gets immensely huge for just a bunch of pirates doing pirate things as they see fit.

The blackening on his arms is something called Haki, more specifically Armament Haki (also translated as the Color of Arms). It's basically someone's willpower manifested as armor, used both offensively and defensively. Anyone can develop it, but it's uncommon in most of the world.

Arcs can have over 100 episodes but there are shorter ones. The current arc that's broadcasting now is at 184 episodes and counting.

Oh boy....
Late to seeing this, but I love when more people start diving into One Piece content!! You mentioned that some of their outfits look like French Privateers, well privateers are largely in this show about "Pirates." Although, they go by another title and they are problematic. Also, alot of the group shots and varying outfits worn in these openings aren't directly from the anime, but are pulled from one-shot illustrations by Eiichiro Oda.
there is in fact an opening where luffy speaks before this. Its opening 4 in the start monolog.
The length of the arcs differ, but the current arc (The Wano Kuni arc) started in episode 887 and is still going on at episode 1052. It will probably last around 40 - 50 more episodes.

It's honestly better that you watch all the openings at once because once you get to their arcs, you'll have already forgotten 99% of the spoilers in them.
The 1000 episode opening emphasized the transition from the old school screen ratio and get rid of the black bars on the side. Also the animation and story changes.

An arc can be over 100+ episodes, like Water 7. Some arcs could be less than 12 episodes since they act like fillers or sidestories and they don't have any real impact to the main story or the main Straw hat pirate crew.

just saying for opening 23, the black arm thing is called "Haki" basically your willpower manifested visually its like armor, everyone can do it that has a strong will. it goes more in depth to it in the show like the old man in opening 23 was able to do it too and Luffy has shown the Haki since opening 16!

fun fact: luffy vs The Dragon is the longest fight in anime, and the longest arc in anime is the current one. the second longest for both are also from one piece

"The Greatest Story Ever Told" is a good one but "The Breathtaking World of One Piece" is even better.
The best way to explain powers is that there are things called Devil Fruits in One Piece. If you eat a Devil Fruit you are given a power but in exchange you lose your ability to swim. The main character ate the Gum gum fruit so he can now stretch since his body is made of rubber

My top 5 openings are 21, 5, 20, 14, and 13.
Here are some anime that have fantastic opening songs to consider as well if you don't have them on the list: D.Gray-man, The Seven Deadly Sins, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Attack on Titan, and Gintama
Yeah you pronounce it Monkey (like the animal) Loo Fee but his middle initial is D. We don't know what the D stands for but it's extremely important for the lore. That is all I'll say about it.
Also yes, the hat is extremely important. More important than you think actually. Not even like on a metaphorical or thematic level.
Opening 17 was actually for the 15th anniversary, but the specific video you watched seemed to cut out all the text saying that.
As you go more into the story devil fruit are going to be more of a thing however every devil fruit has different abilities depending on what you get. Tho downside you can't really swim as a side effect however it doesn't really stop people with devil fruit because you just can make up for that depending on what you have

-Luffy (the straw hat guy): Power of Rubber, but surprisingly more than just a Rubber
-Zoro (Sword guy): Three Sword Style Swordsman
-Nami (Orang haired girl): Weather power
-Usopp (Long nosed guy): A Sniper with "plant bullets"
-Sanji (The Blonde guy): He fight with his leg, but he's actually more than that
-Chopper (I think you already know him): Shape shifting reindeer
-Robin (Black haired girl): she can sprouts any body parts
-Franky (Blue haired muscular guy): a Cyborg
-Brook (Skeleton guy): Music, but also a swordsman
-Jinbe (Actually he's not a genie, but yes, he's also not from human race): Karate+Water power
Btw the Blond guy is Sanji. 'San'(3 in Japanese)-ji

I like opening 23 a lot maybe my favorite for music and song 26:17
Opening 1 plays only like 4 or 5 times during the whole show and everything it plays it during a monumental moment
the opening I like is the first one on this video which opening 14. One Piece is very world building, There older video that does spoiler a little talking about a character but in the video it does explain it a bit The Appeal of One Piece: Where to Start ruclips.net/video/2ZqnC-eVwrE/видео.html you don't have to watch but just wanted to ley you know. One Piece has also out sold Spiderman and Batman leaving only behind Superman which in the video he does explain that a bit. There has been 15 movies that are in it too. I have been watching and reading the manga when it first came out. I love most the characters and it does get emotional you can be laughing one min and then crying your eyes out the next or angry at a character.
