I thought I could bunny hop until I saw this video but I am finding my technique is completely wrong. I can’t manual & so I am completely missing out on shifting my weight back over the rear axle. I can muscle the front end up by compressing over the front wheel & pulling straight up. The problem I guess is that I’m allowing my speed to carry the rear over the object & not the proper technique.

Thanks for breaking down to 3 steps bc most you tubers or instructors would just teach front wheel lift, rear wheel lift and just say do it over and over until we get it. I also have to move forward right after manual and do rear wheel lift. Plus right body position before the preloading. Very well explained by Kyle. It motivates me to try after countless failures... This entire tutorial series with April is so amazing! Kyle is such a supportive , patient teacher. It's amazing to have a pro be so genuinely excited over baby steps in basic skills. This also sets the right expectations of progress for the learner , and above all, to really have fun! Would love to see advanced coaching series for the same skills once April has had time to internalise and have a bit of fun in the future. Thanks, guys. You're so positive and inspiring. Trying to learn how to bunny hop myself to teach my 4 yo kid. He just loves his bike, so I feel kinda obliged to inspire him to expand his experience beyond just riding around.
You are making by far the best mtb skill teaching videos with an outstanding didactical value! I am finally making progress because you' are analysing and correcting the beginners approach. April is very talented though and a fast learner. Great inspiring teamwork. Thank you!
My daughter and I just watched this since she's working on her bunny hops and jumps- she was cheering April on a ton, it was great! Thanks for the vid!
Hi Kyle & April, Thanks for putting these videos together. I sometimes struggle to get my wife out on the trails with me. She watched a couple of your tutorials last Saturday and joined me and our boys on Sunday. She had a good time and I think part of that is because of what she learned from you. Your teaching approach and focus on the fundamental elements are the best combination I've seen on RUclips. Well Done!
I get so pumped on 1. Kyle's advice 2. April absorbing said advice and her progression and 3. getting to go do it myself! This channel is exactly what I need!
This is the first time a bunny hop video has actually made any real sense to me! I can’t wait to try. (edit) -> Also, these videos have all been super helpful. I currently work in the bike industry so lots of the people I’m around are quite advanced. It’s really nice to see April making progress because that means I can improve too! So glad I found your channel.
Old fart (61+) that never rode anything like the challenges I see in the Texas Hill Country. These videos are amazing because trying to teach myself has not led to great results! These really teach the basics that I can never teach myself through "trial and failure". And having your great positive coaching, and a subject, April, who has real fear and then success is uplifting. Love it!!!
You are the best,,,period. The way you break every move into every single, small step is great. I instruct snowboarding and skiing and use similar methods except I don't have April. What a effective way to teach. You guys are great together. I'm learning things I couldn't get before. Thank you, Kyle and April!
I appreciate that! Thank you so much for all of the kind words :) its been really fun and honestly this was never intended to be a popular thing but just to kind of document and share her progression so the fact that people are enjoying it makes us both super happy!
What I love about your videos that not many others do, is that your giving us the view of experience from a beginner who doesn’t know how to do these tricks, it then allows us to relate and see any difficulties that your girlfriend is going through. Thank you so much, keep up the great work.
These are by far the best tutorials for mountain biking and refining the basics! I am so excited for this series and how you two work together. Like a few other comments in here, I got into mountain biking a few years ago and love it but never learned any of the basics. I've watched endless of videos on tutorials and technique but the pros never break it down to something realistic like this. For the first time since I started riding my mountain bike, I stopped and got on asphalt to just work on basics like bunny hopping, cornering, etc and I'm excited to try them on the trails! Great content! Keep up the amazing videos positive energy!
Hey man, I have watched many of your tutorials, and they have helped me greatly. I have finally understood the manual technique(After watching that video) and been able to apply it. After Years of trying! Thank you for your amazing helpful content
Kyle and April: 1) another fantastic videos... keep em coming love watching it 2) Kyle... u teach it in a way that's easy to digest 3) I dont think I will nearly be as skilled as April 4) u guys are such a great looking couple... cheers!
Thank you for these videos. I've ridden a mountain bike for 20+ years, but never had any training. After watching your Tahoe video I tried a wall ride and it was AWESOME!!! I've also been able to corner faster. Can't wait to get off of work so I can practice the bunny hop skills. Please keep the videos coming!
Been riding since 1984; and these are by far the best tutorials that I've come across; I love the way that you break down each of the components; and show the progression; and repeat both real time, and slow; and break down the steps. I love the way that you preface, with what she does right, what she struggles with - I, too was trying too hard on the drops, and was hucking them... and wouldn't you know it, 30 years ago, when I used to just do them, I probably just did precisely that - I didn't overthink or try to hop them -- I probably just rode off them! It's as I've aged and gotten away from fun, and errred towards an overabundance of caution (and not trying!) that I've actually ingrained some bad habits, and unlearned some natural things, and picked up a bunch of sloppy, unnatural stuff. Other folks have put up videos, and they try and break it down, and they focus on parts of the skill... but sometimes fail to break it all down, and it get's super confusing. You have removed all of the confusion; and I have re-learned, with your drills! So Thank-you, BOTH!!! Rock On!!!
Hey guys, just wanna say a big thank you all the way from South Africa! Been watching your tutorials and although I've been riding for a long time I realised again you are never to old to learn new tricks. You guys inspire me to try new things and hit some jumps I've been avoiding since I ate to much dust because of them. Kyle, your down to earth, practical teaching style is great and the way you treat April is amazing. Good job. April you are an inspiration! Your teachability is great and you are real brave trying all these new things. You are a great couple and I wish you all the best
Thanks so much for the genuine compliment Christiaan! We agree that you can always learn or improve your skills no matter how long you have been riding!
Keep up the awesome videos. Although you can tell that April is no newbie, as she picks things up really quickly, it's great to see someone progress from little mistakes to doing it right. Thanks you April for having the courage to show your progress and having a great attitude. Thanks Kyle for keeping it simple and the great attitude. Now if I could get these things right. Take care.
Your videos are exactly what my boys and I needed, to figure out what we were missing in drops, bunnyhops, wheelies and so on. W greatly appreciate your thorough instructions! Great teachers!
The way you break down the components of the bunny hop technique - especially the part about getting the front wheel up and being patient - is the clearest explanation I have seen and heard. Thanks! Now, I gotta go try it.
This was a great lesson. When I was young....in the 1980s i was the first kid in my street to get a BMX. Now in my fifties I ride nearly every day on my MTB and want to push the boundaries of my skills. In regard to bunny hops, my fear is when doing a manual that i'm just gonna fall off. But i'll keep on trying. I think i've watched too many motorcycle fail videos.
That's awesome Warren, just make sure you cover your rear brake for manuals and a hot tip on bunny hops is some protection on your shins while you are learning!
I've seen many bike instructional videos and there is definitely something about watching progression AND your teaching style, Kyle. If you worked in the school, you'd be teacher of the year in short order.
Great video and thank you so much for not blasting the music during the riding clips! I have the volume up to hear what is being said and so many times with other RUclipsrs they have the music volume higher which drives me crazy! Thank you for having April there, it really helps to see someone who is learning it at the same level vs seeing a pro just make it look easy. Watch out Kyle, April will be out riding you soon! 🤘🏼
By FAR the best bunny hop tutorial I have ever seen. I've watched dozens and dozens. While they all are helpful, they just don't seem to help. Each one seems to have its own little twist that may work great for the instructor but just sends the viewer down another "rabbit hole" (pun intended), working on something new with no results. This video presents the basic elements of the bunny hop in a format that is simple, easy to understand and easy to follow. As a result, it is easier for the rider to put the pieces together and master these basic steps without any unnecessary and distracting complications. Thanks so much for all your great tutorials. You are as good a teacher as you are a rider, something that is pretty rare.
These are the best MTB basics videos. They really strip a lot of what I do right and wrong down to really simple to components and I know what I need to do and how I need to practice to get better. Kyle you're such a great teacher!! Also, April is adorable and also so badass, everytime she made the jump my heart jumped too. Thank you so much, I really love how approachable your instructions are for some tricks that aren't so approachable.
Hi, I'm just starting out in MTB at the age of 55 and your series of videos are amazing and are helping me tremendously, my skills and confidence will grow for sure. Thanks and keep up the good work......
Wow. Thanks soooo much guys. What I was missing was this “slight delay” thing. Today it clicked for me and I finally can bunny hop. Yipppiiiieeeeeeeeee. Working on height next. :). Thanks again.
Damn April is a quick learner! I think you're short-selling yourself by posting these instructionals for free on RUclips - they're that good. I'm sorry I'm that old guy that keeps commenting, but your videos are right on. In the early 80s we used progressively bigger 2-by's on edge for practice runs (2X4, 2X6, etc). The bunny hop was a critical skill practiced in Austin on the steps of the Capital and on the new (then) Hill of Life access on the Barton Creek Greenbelt trail.
Having the feedback from someone who is in the process of learning really is a tremendous help. I always take away a few points from each of your videos to improve my (abysmal) technique. As for having luck twice, years ago I heard something I've since taken on as mantra: "Skill is when having luck becomes habit." In that sense, was the success on the trail bike really just lucky? 😉
Found your channel like one hour ago and went trough 2 of your vides (Drops&Riding position) and they where so usefull to me. Now I watch this vid and than grab my bike to see if I can instantly do better. Can't wait to see more from your channel! Thank you so much, Kyle & April!
I've never really learned to properly perform a bunny hop in my whole MTB lifetime. I sort of do the quick front wheel lift followed by the even quicker rear wheel lift. Watching how you break it down makes it so much easier to understand the mechanics. This is by far the best instructional on YT. Will "hop" on and update at a later date to see if I master the technique. Thanks!
April's pony tail is a perfect wind vane. In slow or stopped motion, it shows precise technique moments at when she ascends, travels in the air and then descends!
@@waylonwo372 no definitely you don't have to master manual to be able to do bunny hop the only thing you have to be able to do is pulling up your front wheel
I like ur toutorials because I’m pretty new to MTB and you show someone learning instead of just you, the pro just getting up on stage and nailing it. It really shows me what I’m doing right vs wrong
Another fantastic video! Kyle, you’re a fantastic coach and boy, April is a really good student. Her progression is immediate and the slo-mo is incredible. Seeing both of your techniques helps a ton. This channel is going to take off with this video series! I have trouble when two drops are in quick succession, and I’d also like help with jumping :)
It has been really enjoyable to watch your videos. I have been riding bikes for about 65 years. I grew up on bikes. My first was a schwinn I bought for $5.00 when I was making 25 cents a week. Since then, I have had many eras of biking but never been exposed to the skills you are covering with today's bike technology. It is truly a different sport today. I now have a new mountain bike and am riding single track out of La Grande, Oregon. These trails are what we dreamed about when we were kids, looking for a pile of dirt at a construction site. I am looking forward to practicing the skills you are teaching in these videos. Thanks for what you have presented to us.
I love it when you summaries things, and when you ask April what did she feel was most important. Bringing in someone who doesn’t know and training them to do it in front of camera and finally getting their inputs is a big confidence booster for me. Next challenge: Fireball, it’s time for “Parking lot bunny hops”!
Hi Kyle and April. I got myself a decent hard tail mountain bike for my 68-th birthday and want to learn all of it, bunny hopping, jumping and... I guess doing it at high spead one day. Watched 2 of your videos 3 x each and tomorrow my first day of bunnies, well, whatever comes of it. If I survive and get anywhere with my education, will share it with you. Best to both of you, Wiktor
SO true! Actively lifting the bike by pulling your feet up when clipped in is actually called the "piggy hop", since it's _way_ less effective and not as graceful.
Cat Loaf yes it’s very strange, it originated from the day when clipped in pedals had straps, and if you had clips instead of straps, it would be considered “clip less”
@@Catloaf87 Clipless pedals have cleats not clips, therefore "clipless". Clips are the metallic (sometimes plastic) part screwed on a regular (flat) pedal that form sort of a hook where the foot is inserted, and the strap then secures the connection. Still used in track cycling.
Kyle, I recently learned how to bunny hop “not master” from a wide variety of how too’s. This video exceeded them all and explains so much simple technique I have been missing. This is going to be a GREAT video for my wife as a new rider who is dying to learn some sick new tricks and techniques! And thank you April, nicely done. The Sutherlan’s *Bentonville Ar.
Yeah they are for sure! Having someone like a coach to tell you what to change on each try helps so much but if i told her to just go do it on her own right now after a couple days she would struggle, building that quick muscle memory takes hundreds and hundreds of reps for sure!

You are making by far the best mtb skill teaching videos with an outstanding didactical value! I am finally making progress because you' are analysing and correcting the beginners approach. April is very talented though and a fast learner. Great inspiring teamwork. Thank you!
Glad to help! Thanks for sharing :)
My daughter and I just watched this since she's working on her bunny hops and jumps- she was cheering April on a ton, it was great! Thanks for the vid!
Awww that’s so awesome to hear! I absolutely love to hear when I can help inspire others, thanks for sharing! 😊
Well Done!
That is so awesome! We are so stoked to be helping people enjoy it more and hopefully we can continue to do so :)
I've always loved riding my Bike but you make me want to ride more and learn more skills on the Bike. Thank you
Thats so cool! That makes me smile!
I get so pumped on 1. Kyle's advice 2. April absorbing said advice and her progression and 3. getting to go do it myself! This channel is exactly what I need!
Thats awesome! Thanks so much for watching!!!
Yay! Thank you! :)
Love it!!!
Thank you so much for such an nice comment, we are having a blast making these for you guys!
Patience, confidence and a Good teacher... Really Love this couple...👍
Thank you! :)
What I love about your videos that not many others do, is that your giving us the view of experience from a beginner who doesn’t know how to do these tricks, it then allows us to relate and see any difficulties that your girlfriend is going through. Thank you so much, keep up the great work.
Thats so cool to hear, thank you!
Kyle & April - Ride Mtb all good.
That's awesome to hear, thanks for sharing! Comments like this keep us motivated :)
You’re a great teacher. I’ve watched dozens of videos and yours is the one that makes the most sense in learning how to bunny hop. Thanks.
You are so welcome! Thanks!
You are a great teacher. Thank you for breaking it down into different drills/tips. This has helped me tremendously.
You are so welcome!
Hey man, I have watched many of your tutorials, and they have helped me greatly. I have finally understood the manual technique(After watching that video) and been able to apply it. After Years of trying! Thank you for your amazing helpful content
Glad to help! Thanks so much for watching!!
Kyle and April:
1) another fantastic videos... keep em coming love watching it
2) Kyle... u teach it in a way that's easy to digest
3) I dont think I will nearly be as skilled as April
4) u guys are such a great looking couple... cheers!
You rock! Thank you so much for the kind comment :)
OMG! April was really awesome! I will try every step that you taught in the video! Congratulation, April!
Yay! Thank you!
Great to hear, so glad we can help you improve your skills Matthew! :)
Rock On!!!
Awesome to hear Jason, we are glad that our videos are helpful for you :)
Take care.
Thanks for the nice comment :) we have been having a ton of fun making these!
Your videos are exactly what my boys and I needed, to figure out what we were missing in drops, bunnyhops, wheelies and so on. W greatly appreciate your thorough instructions! Great teachers!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching :)
The way you break down the components of the bunny hop technique - especially the part about getting the front wheel up and being patient - is the clearest explanation I have seen and heard. Thanks! Now, I gotta go try it.
Thats awesome! I really hope it helps! Thanks for watching Ken :)
Kyle, you have amazing patience, great teaching dude. I'm over 50 and am watching your vids to learn better MTB riding.
Thank you so much!
Haha thanks, that means a lot :)
Thanks! I am glad you are liking the videos :)
I just turned 58 and am really enjoying your videos. The step by step how to's have me ready to learn to manual and to improve my bunny hops.
That is so rad!!! Congrats!
Perfect energy into your vids. You both bring a lot of good vibes in learning.
Glad you enjoy it! Thank you!!
These videos are awesome! Some of the best tutorials I've found on YT for mtb basics
Glad you think so! Thank you!
April’s killing it !! ... this video has inspired me to try Bunny hoops again.
Thanks!!!
Super video! I applauded for $5.00 👏👏
Thank you so much Steve!!! 😊
Thank you so much Lavinia :) Im really gald you like them! Thanks for watching!
This girl has got serious skills and determination. Plus you’re a good instructor. Very patient 👍🏻
Thank you :)
I’ve watched other bunny hop videos and I haven’t been able to do it. Seeing April make the same mistakes I do is what really helped me. Thanks guys
You are so welcome! I hope this one helps!
The best explanation on how to bunny hop I’ve ever seen, I still can’t jump lol, however it is very helpful. Keep up the videos.
Thank you! Will do!

9:20 I just went "Woah!!!!" good job April and kudos to Kyle for releasing videos like this. Keep it up man!
Thanks for watching! :)
Glad to help! That is so rad! Congrats!!!

Thats so cool! I actually lived in Austin for two winters, such a cool city!
Well said! Thanks for watching!
Found your channel like one hour ago and went trough 2 of your vides (Drops&Riding position) and they where so usefull to me. Now I watch this vid and than grab my bike to see if I can instantly do better. Can't wait to see more from your channel! Thank you so much, Kyle & April!
Thats so cool! Thank you so much for joining our crew!!
In slow or stopped motion, it shows precise technique moments at when she ascends, travels in the air and then descends!
haha never noticed that! Nice spot!
I love these! You can see her progression and it helps.
Thanks :)
i love when he says "that was very good" literally every time she does anything :)
haha trying to be supportive, if you have ever coached your significant other you know that the positivity goes a lonnnng way
I have a question wish you can advise. Do I need to master manual before practising bunny hop?
@@waylonwo372 no definitely you don't have to master manual to be able to do bunny hop the only thing you have to be able to do is pulling up your front wheel
You are one of the best, if not the best instructor on RUclips. Kudos to April for risking her life to help you prove it.
I like ur toutorials because I’m pretty new to MTB and you show someone learning instead of just you, the pro just getting up on stage and nailing it. It really shows me what I’m doing right vs wrong
Thanks Zackary! We are glad our videos are relatable 😊
Wow. April is getting so good, she's a natural. You're a good instructor Kyle.
Thank you :)
Thanks so much! I promise we will get to those other topics as soon as we can too!
Another great one!April is a great student!
I think so too! Thank you :)
Thats so cool :) thanks for watching Ronald we really appreciate it :)
53 yo woman here, new to MTB. Love your videos! Keep them coming, please.
Thank you! Will do!
You and April make it look so easy, but I’m getting a great workout in trying to practice 😅
Yeah editing really speeds up the process haha these usually take us 3-4 hours to film and April is so tired by the end!
Omg amazing video im gonna be able to use this to make my videos better.
Hopefully this can makey channel grow.
What a nice couple. Love the content!
Thanks so much!
Thats so cool to hear :) thank you so much for the nice comment!
Happy birthday! Hope you have fun! Let us know how it goes!!
The best pedals to learn on is flats. Do not learn to bunny hop on clipless pedals! You will get the wrong technique
Yeah I totally agree!
SO true! Actively lifting the bike by pulling your feet up when clipped in is actually called the "piggy hop", since it's _way_ less effective and not as graceful.
Clipless? But doesnt it have clips
That is so cool! Thanks for sharing that and watching, i hope your wife finds it valuable too! Thanks!
bunny hops are highly complex movements. April can pick things up pretty quickly eh. getting this stuff dialed takes a LOT of practice!
Yeah they are for sure! Having someone like a coach to tell you what to change on each try helps so much but if i told her to just go do it on her own right now after a couple days she would struggle, building that quick muscle memory takes hundreds and hundreds of reps for sure!
You and April need to keep rocking and sharing the stoke with your how-to videos! Love seeing going from ground zero to the next level. You’re keeping this new rider (54 yrs old) inspired!
More to come! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Dude your a great teacher. You're content is more detailed than some of the bigger named channels on YT.

Glad you think so!!! Thank you for the sub! 😊
I see your videos.... Get motivated , take my cycle and I practice for like a hour or so and the result is I just get tired 😂😂💥

That is awesome! Happy Birthday!!
I've recently joined the mountain biking community and was looking for a few tutorial videos for basic tips and tricks. I'm very happy to have found your videos! I'm really enjoying watching them and looking forward to trying the drills and applying the skills on the trail. Thanks!
That is so cool! Thanks for watching Nick!
I wish I had a coach like him 😞
Same 😔
Same.
thought I was the only one doing that 3rd drill lol I do that when ever walking/Pushing my Bike just playing around It actually helps as silly as it looks.. ps. your an awesome Teacher man! and April is Learning Fast! hope the Both of you have a good weekend!
I love doing the third drill too haha, its such an overlooked skill. Thanks for the nice comment too!
I've learnt everything here
Kyle you really are a very good teacher. I have been watching how to videos for MTB riding and I have to say the way you brake things down is outstanding!
Thank you so much for the nice comment! Its been really fun sharing these with you all :)
Great teaching technique, breaking down the technique in slow motion is very helpful. Watching April master a lesson is inspiring and motivates me, as a female rider to work on my skills. Keep making videos, I love them.
Awesome, thank you! We will try to keep knocking these out for you guys!
