    My wife and I just watched and we just bought bikes last week. We keep saying had they sold us the bikes and recommended hooking up with a coach we would have thought it was the worst upscale attempt ever. Going out and riding twice, I’m like I need to search RUclips. Now I’m like wishing that was common to hire a coach. April is lucky to have u. Priceless

    Great job,
    I find a simple nuance is using the knee and foot position. When the knee is ahead of the foot (ankle) the front has weight. When the foot is ahead of the knee, the weight is rearward.
    This is a simple immediate and easy to gauge method. In the chunk and jank, estimating where the hips are versus the rear axle is harder than awareness of the knee and foot.
    Also the feeling of driving the bike through the bottom bracket(feet) with light touch on the handlebars helps keep positioning good.

    love this so much. wheelies are cool, but this is something that is way more useful on day to day riding. this is such a good explanation of the nuance that you experience while riding but don't necessarily understand "why" things feel different. Very well done!

      @AprilRideMTB  4 года назад +9

      Thanks! Yeah I really wanted to do this one and have it as a reference point before doing more advanced lessons. But without understanding that big foundation of riding position nothing else really makes as much sense :)

      Hey Richard I got the haha. But honestly I think that everybody should have a good foundation on riding a bike off road with no suspension at all. Unfortunately it's not a thing and not everybody's going to enjoy a BMX in their youth but I can honestly say that I got an early start and the progression has been fabulous. The equipment nowadays is amazing.
      I grew up in lake Tahoe and I've ridden all the most famous trails there and had a hand in building most of them I've ridden squaw valley top to bottom all day long on bikes with no suspension. The experience of that leads me to ride differently the most I'm sure and when I finally do get to a full suspension bike I'm sure I'll really enjoy it....... One day I'll grow up,,😁
      Hey and to be clear I'm not dissing anybody I guess I'm just so technologically starved because it has been so long since I was in the sport that I'm pretty damn happy with a Schwinn Walmart bike with basic discs and a big box shock....lol
      And yes I'm going to upgrade my new Schwinn just for fun before I move on to a real bike.

    • @AprilRideMTB
      @AprilRideMTB  4 года назад +1

      Yeah i really try hard not to say "dont do this because its bad" because there are so many body types and riding styles and i am just trying to help people learn the reasons behind the style of riding that i learned which helped me win 3 national titles and podium in over 30 races in a row. I am not saying i'm the best rider or coach but I can definitely help people learn how to be more confident and safer on the bike all while going faster and having more control. @@AprilRideMTB same here except I'm far far away from the podium :). You're correct about the fact that this isn't an exact science and body portions and bike geometries make small yet significant differences. I think people should learn first the neutral position and then start to shift the balance between the front and backend.

As someone else mentioned below the explanation using the scales to show body weight transfer vs heel height was absolute genius! The written text plus 'line-angle' graphics of body, arms, legs and feet makes understanding the physics of biking so much easier! @@AprilRideMTB Howdy Kyle, Yup I thought I knew all of this stuff - those things that you feel intuitively but are hard to explain to other people. So I love sharing your work to the rest of my family (of all ages) to help them on their way too. So FYI I haven't been on a MTB since I was 16/17 - some 40 odd years ago, after joining the military! So having recently got a new full-suspension bike I'm now out there trying to remember (when RUclips didn't exist in 1976+...) the things I use to do without thinking, just naturally - you just do them because it felt right, but then in other circumstances of bumps & jumps, other stuff happens and I fall-off the bike - minus some skin somewhere! But that's life, you just live, learn and get better because you have the passion to overcome a hurdle and enjoy a wonderful ride in the bush/wilderness! So now in the modern era, having your posts & videos to explain the theory, physics and then demonstrate skills using Miss April is brilliant. I'm just loving all of your posts, as I said a couple of times now - You always have concise explanations, great slow-mo where it's required and the body line/angle-graphics etc is great. Taking Miss April out to the trail and showing her working on improving her skills is brilliant - brave woman, all of those death-defying journeys are fabulous and she jumps magnificently, off ledges higher than I would ever contemplate - so brave, confident and the result of good coaching! Well done... don't stop!
