@@markburke1396 There isn't really an explanation in the game data, that's just how it behaves when a unit doesn't have any attack classes but still attacks.
Was it the Shah or whatnot which actually had an attack animation and could attack units? Well, attack animation is quite a stretch, as the Shah turned into photon trooper (?) when he got to a melee range of an enemy unit he wanted to attack. I remember that much when I was kid and played with the scenario editor, but it's very vague memory.
If a king starts retaliating versus enemy units such as this elephant, can another king then retaliate against that first king for attacking said elephant? Can we somehow then get an incredibly slow king vs king battle?
Hmm, I think you could get one King attacking another, but they also run away when attacked, so I don't think you can get two attacking each other at the same time.
@@T-West Does the retaliation apply to teammates? You could maybe set up a system where King 1 attacks King 2. 2 runs away, but their teammate, 3, retaliates and attacks 1. 1 runs away, 4 retaliates. 3 runs away, 2 retaliates. 4 runs away, 1 retaliates. Repeat.
A fun fact: Hero kings can attack without having to be "triggered". You can right-click with them and they actually have a reasonably fast fire rate, but they only do 1 damage per tick. Used to do that on AIs if I found weak villagers to snipe. Also I guess this explains why AIs can attack with Horse/Camels/units that can't normally attack sometimes.
Yup! In the HyperRandom map you sometimes get the hero Kings who can attack. Horses don't respond to the retaliation system like Kings do, but it may be possible for AIs to make them attack, I've never noticed that.
Maybe there is something to do with minimum damage. Like if a unit with 5 attack (and no bonus) hits a unit with 6 armour it still does at least 1 damage per hit.
The king heroes (King Alfonso/Sancho/Bela) in the scenario editor can be commanded to attack, slowly damaging enemies despite their supposed 0 damage. Also wolves and boars being attacked by a king hero won't fight back.
Twest, in the second clip when you were demonstrating the king vs the elephant how were you able to control two civilizations/players at the same time like quickly switching/controlling between blue Sicilians and red banglas. Thanks.
Ctrl+Shift+F[1-9] swaps among players in single player (counts as cheats as far as achievements go). For example, Ctrl+Shift+F2 swaps to player 2's PoV.
I experienced a similar thing to this in AOE 1 (that might still be possible in AOE2?). Was playing the opening moves campaign map and had some monks. At one point during the game a lion was attacking one of my monks and he turned around and tried to convert it. Normally you can't right click gaia units to start converting them but my monk started doing it on his own. I even tried to bring my other monk over to heal just to see if I can keep him alive to see what happens. Sadly though he died and I wasn't able to see if he'd ever be able to convert that lion. :P I have not been able to reproduce that since and I've heard reports of this happening to others. Don't recall if I've read about it happening in AOE 2 though.
Not sure what would cause that in Aoe1, or if the conversion ever could succeed lol. I doubt that would happen in Aoe2 since Wolves can't attack Monks. Maybe if a player controlled a Hunting Wolf in some custom map or scenario.
idk if my memory servers correctly but wasn't it possible to attack with a king in the old aoe2 game and there was a weird animation? or was it with the shah?
That feature was removed in the Definitive Edition. However, non-standard (hero) kings still have that. The examples of non-standard kings have been already mentioned by TWest.
@@pedrofelck Kings are usually garrisoned, or run away if they're the ones hit by the attack. I actually think this situation would be pretty rare in a Regicide game.

Similar to the King's attacking is the classic Deer that attacks the Outpost in Vinlandsaga: ruclips.net/video/jjk_K0HPeoI/видео.html
I always loved that deer
but the video still doesn't explain why or how the king does actual damage and why is so long intervals. (unless its explained in the deer video).

The moment a king is attacked he runs away, so, probably not. But it'd be nice.

I like how the king's crown falls off when he dies.
I was hoping it would land in that Farmer's bucket.
Why does the king with 0 attack deal damage tho?
I think it has something to do with the siege elephant’s negative hack armor . Although why he took an hour to kill the elephant is beyond me.
Possibly something to do with the elephant having negative melee armour?

Yeah, it seems that 0 is not really a 0, but something displayed as such, some fraction maybe? Would be fun to know.
I believe it's because attacks always do a minimum of 1 damage.

Similar, but the Deer is because a scenario trigger tasks it to attack.
T-West vs T-90
If the king is Slav, has Druzhina, and attacks by retaliation, can it do trample damage? Does the king count as infantry?
The king doesn't count as infantry. He has his own unit class.
idk if my memory servers correctly but wasn't it possible to attack with a king in the old aoe2 game and there was a weird animation? or was it with the shah?

Do we know the radius of the retaliation zone? How far away does a unit have to be before it won't retaliate when its friend gets attacked?
Will have to look into this.
Why kings don't retaliate on normal units attacking another unit next to a king? (Like the knights vs longbow example)
They do retaliate in those situations too. If I add a King next to those Knights in the Longbow example, he runs to attack.
