  • Our S65 swapped 1M was already a very special car, the high revving V8 in the smaller chassis was such a fun car to drive, but what if we took it even further?
    Well how about the P65 V8 from a Z4 GT3 race car? Built by BMW Motorsport and costing €90,000 new this 4.4 litre V8 revs to 9000rpm and makes well over 500hp.
    To the best of our knowledge no one has ever put one in a road car, so join us as we start building our ultimate race car for the road.

    Removing the drysump made it loose the P in the P65. You converted a great Motorport engine to a stroked S65. The drysump is what makes it a race engine.

      I agree I'm sure the team would of looked at a stroked engine but decided potentially too many unknowns , this is an official engine previously owned by another great motoring establishment, if they want in the future dry sump can be added back too but I do agree its lost abit of uniqueness with some of these changes.

      The bedplate self aligns extremely accurately on the S65 and many other BMW engines. It would be very unusual to line hone, unless you were using a mismatched block and bedplate combo.

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  3 месяца назад +1

      The bed plate was machined for the dry sump setup so this almost brought the whole project to a grinding halt.
      After some research and speaking with industry contacts BMW Motorsport appear to sell a dry sump kit for the S65 which includes a bed plate (very possibly this exact kit we removed). The fact BMW sell that gave Mr VANOS the idea to try an S65 bed plate that hasn’t been machined.
      After checking all tolerances and clearances, ensuring the engine turns over etc he was happy with the results meaning we could move forward with the project.
      Time will tell but it seems to be running well so far.

    As always, it's an excellent build. I read in the comments below that the dry sump had to go because it is RHD. But if it was LHD, would it be okay? Also, as you mentioned about the P65, is there anything special besides the cam profile, the dry sump, and displacement? Will this engine have the rod-bearing issue, too? I appreciate everyone at Evolve and can't wait to hear the answers to my questions :)

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  3 месяца назад +3

      It would be easier to have run dry sump in a LHD car, but would still have required a 10-15 litre oil tank in the passenger footwell (we were advised pressure drop from having it mounted in the boot would be too great) which considering this car won’t spend its life on track with slick tyres and high G force was a compromise we didn’t think was worth it for a road car.
      There is very little available information on this engine, in the future we may fully disassemble the engine to really see what’s inside and compare to a conventional S65.

    Did the GTS and CRT come with the P65 or do they have the S65 but bored out to 4.4?

      They have the S65b44, but from our research in working with this P65 and taking it apart we think they may be quite closely related.

    With engine off turn steering wheel left-right about 20-30times. Then start engine and you'll never hear that p/s pump grind gears.

    You will lose more power by taking the dry system off than the intake mate. I bet your magnificent intake makes the same power as the race one under 100 mph or so. Great project.

      Please explain how a dry sump makes power. 😂

      It scavenges the oil away from the crank. I built s65’s for m3 ‘s in the states for kinetic. Ask any race engine builder or tuner.

    Why ditch the BMW motorsport dry carbon intake? When eventuri made their intake it was the sound of the Z4 GT3 they tried to emulate 🤷🏽‍♂️ eventuri’s glossed carbon looks good but doesn’t have the sound/bark of the ultra thin higher flowing dry carbon intake..

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Месяц назад

      @@bossboyritchno1685 the BMW one isn't carbon. It's the same plastic as the road car one. Eventuri sounds much better. And it's also dry carbon.

    Should have just built an E9x M3 V8 rather than remove all that helps make this race engine what it is.
    Sorry to see the sump and plenum change. 😔
