Do you really need a paint thickness gauge?

I have a lot of botched touch up paint on a 2015 Nissan Murano platinum. What steps should I consider to remove and repair such spots? Try polishing first or go straight to wet sanding? I don't have a lot of time to fix it.

I just bought one from griots it was 250$ and it has an app for my phone and has the different parts of the car in the app and all. It feels cheap though! I’m thinking maybe I should have bought one from that other company that has one for same price but we will see if it works good.
