    This has been very informative! I knew all these phrases but i wasn't aware of the subtle uses in conversation.

    This is spot on! I never thought about it before. But yes, we want to say no without causing offense. If you keep pushing for an answer and not taking the hint we will eventually say no but we will feel ashamed and a bit annoyed for having to do so.

    This is pretty much a 1:1 with English, especially British English which has a way of making the most rude sentences sound nice.
    For Example: “Good luck” can be positive or negative depending on the context.

    My swedish aunty always says a straight up blunt "no" haha interesting to discover shes the exception not the rule! It's very disarming for someone who lives in the UK. Joachim, is there a difference when someone says a soft/normal nej vs a hard pronunciation of nej as N-iii ?

    • @sayitinswedish
      @sayitinswedish  2 года назад +1

      I mean, it's different if you're family than if your strangers or colleagues. So it's not odd if your aunt is more blunt with you.
      No, there is no difference really in how you say nej. Except maybe if you prolong the syllable it will sound more unsure and thus more polite.

    • @sayitinswedish
      @sayitinswedish  2 года назад +1

      You're view of polite doesn't matter in a Swedish world, though. That's why I made this video, so you'll understand that it rather means no. Also, never ever does every cultural trait apply to every single person in that culture. I think you understand that.
