Hi you should have keep the cams in there cradle ,I either wire them in or cable tie.just clean it as one, As you need special tools to set them back up again. I done 7 of these engine, v6 tdi and the 4.2 v8tdi ,they usually break a timing chain. As the chain guides go brittle and let go. When the valves hit the pistons as they do when the chain break , the usually break the roller rockers. Check for crack in them ,and flat spots wear.all the best to your rebuild.
