If not, then this could be the reason for her rejecting his marriage proposal, or perhaps she wanted this moment to be special since Mario asks very suddenly and starts competing with Bowser. I remember seeing a dialogue from Paper Mario where Peach pauses before introducing Mario as her friend, so it seems like either she has doubts about their relationship or that neither of them want to make it public yet.
I feel like it used to be more clearcut, but lately Nintendo seems to be trying to be ambiguous. Even in the movie it was pretty clear that something will happen, but they decided to hold back. Maybe they'll make it official in the sequel

Even though I didn't play much, one of my first games as a child was Super Mario, the collection of remakes for the old games specifically, so I played Super Mario 2 with the updated version of Peach and loved that she could float with her dress, so I'm happy she got a new game!
